I see "keep in touch with old friends" a lot as an excuse.

Maybe I'm just nit that sentimental or schizoid or something but what's the point in that?

I have a circle of friends and it changes as people change and move and from kindergarten into my 40's there are friends and acquaintances who have left the circle.

Sometime in 2001 or 2002 I created a Facebook profile to see what it was all about and almost immediately all of these acquaintances came flooding back. At first I thought , hey this is neat. A week or so later I noticed a pattern. Useless commenting and one-liners about events from the past and frivolous remarks about completely disconnected personal happenings that be ause of the years of separation meant absolutely nothing.

It was essentially a perpetual school reunion.

Imdont know about others but I've never taken any joy in reliving events of the past. I have too much going on now and planned for the future.

I guess for those who "peak" in their teens or twenties latching onto shallow acquaintances and events of the past is important.

I don't see the value in maintaining relationships simply for the sake of those relationships.

If I were to run into some of my best friends from 30, 20 or 10 years ago we'd have absolutely nothing to talk about other than reliving past "glory." Where I am and where I am going is very different from where they are and where they are going. Holding onto the past for whatever reason seems counterproductive. Good times were good times but now they're gone. Move forward to future good times. Go out, try new things, meet new people. Live for tomorrow rather than dwell on yesterday.

I have Facebook. Please, don't blame me. I just put whatever that's on my mind because it asked me to. Other than that, I use it to stay in touch with family and a few friends that I at least care about. Well, I don't stay in touch with the family as much but they are there if they need to contact me anyways. I don't play games on Facebook. They're all crap to me. Well except for Zynga Poker and Robot Unicorn Attack but I can't remember the last time I played any of those two. I've been playing non-Facebook games that's better than anything on Facebook.

At least I know who are the fake people and who are not. As far as I know. Not many of the people in my friends list don't care or probably don't even bother to comment to any of the things I post which is fine by me. Most of them just like my post and then no comment. What's up with that? It's as if not any of them have the guts to say something up front and frankful about it. Or maybe they don't want to look like a fool in front of their other "true" friends.

There are other things I use for Facebook. Like updates of the things I'm looking out for. Such as Abovetopsecret's Facebook page. Keeps me updated at least. Also, my favorite TV show Doctor Who, someone's created a fan page and it's always being updated constantly which is nice for me to know what's going on.

So there are pros and cons on using Facebook. Yes, it dumbs down society. Yes, it's crap and blah blah blah. We're all no different to criticize a website than other people who criticize abovetopsecret.com. Remember, deny ignorance? I know Facebook will be dead someday. I have a feeling Twitter will be next or some other new website we don't know about. Maybe, tumblr? I don't know.

There are other forms of communication of course but I'm not gonna say that Facebook is the best one to communicate with people online. I would say it's one of them but not surely the best. There's always e-mail and text messages on cell, all that other good stuff.

Hi there,
I had a real problem with facebook, I was very addicted to it, I work in an office and I was always on it and not doing my job.
My boss discovered this and gave me a verbal warnings, I didn’t listen I carried on got caught again got another warning.
Eventually I was on my last chance, so I deactivated my profile and got my friend to change my password, told him never to tell me even if I begged.
But I will give this to face book, while I was on there I got in contact with an old school friend on there we met for drinks because we still lived in the same city.
She is now my girlfriend and has been for the last year, we have both now come off facebook and are very happy, I have a many friends of mine who have also left facebook for other reasons, but I would gladly put money on facebook going downhill like face party.
Conclusion........ Yes it’s dead or in the process of dying.

Be honest, how many came to this thread because it was linked on the Facebook page?

I use Facebook, daily. It's free and I use it to keep in touch with people without spending a fortune on calls and texts. I don't get out to socialise often because of my job, home commitments and health issues. With Facebook I feel that little bit less alone in the world.
I also have family in Ireland and friends worldwide (I used to do hotel entertainment) so it's just easier having everyone is one place

Facebook is my light hearted 'have a laugh' site and ATS is my intelligent, educational and thought provoking site. These are the only sites I use religiously. They give a nice balance.

I am far from a 'stupid teen', I just realise that the world is much bigger if you are open to different things.

Don't ridicule Facebook users when you would be upset at being ridiculed for using ATS. It's hypocritical.

The second anything comes to life it begins to die.

Facebook is 'the social site" soon something else will knock it down as it did myspace and myspace did friendster etc. Just all the backlash it receives not only here but everywhere is testament to its fall, which we are beginning to see.

However I have noticed it gets an extreme amount of flack here but thats simply because "we" all believe that its an evil government information mining site that they are using to thelp institute an Orwellian 1984 scenario blah, blah, blah.

While this may or may not be just remember, Facebook like everything else is what the users make of it.

That is all

I use facebook cause my kids use facebook and the fact that I have family far away I found that it wasn't all that bad to exchange pictures of our kids. So, it's like everything else, it's a tool and it serves it's propose, simply don't abuse it.

Ive never used it and I don't have any friends that do... but then again,
I don't even have a mobile phone!
I suppose one day, I'll buy one of those contraptions in the corner of the
room that shows moving pictures.

On the plus-side, I've just acquired a manual on something called Betamax...
I can't wait to start reading it.

I still use facebook, although I rarely speak to people on facebook chat. I only go on there to see when club events are on; it's a lot easier having all upcoming club nights on one website, rather than having to go on 50 different websites.

Well, I like facebook, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

In my opinion facebook is a great tool to keep up with the people you know and even don't know. I use it a lot when I meet new people, instead of giving out my number, I tell them to find me on facebook. Last year I lived in another big city in Europe for a couple of months, where I met a lot of exciting people from all over the world - my plans are to visit some of them, when I have finished my studies this summer.. AND yes, I could just get their email, or number, but facebook is right there, and great for the purpose, when you have friends who live very far away..

I think facebook is a great invention, for those who find social relations very important... And btw, my self esteem is just fine

Everything on top has a demise----everything.

One day FB will fade into the landscape--just like everything else.

I don't even have a mobile or "cell" phone. I have no reason to own one and I'm not going to explain why. But I really value my privacy, so I never bothered with myspace or facebook or the stupidest of them all: twitter.

If people I know want to contact me they know where to find me. They needn't know what I had for lunch or when said lunch is about to traverse my "S" bend.

My grandmother used to say "You should be able to count your real friends on one hand." If social site users knew this they would see the folly of using these websites.

S & F

OMG

This is what I'm talking about!! I HATE FACEBOOK!! So many of my ATS family members are right; Facebook is a way for people to broadcast for the world what they are doing EVERY minute of EVERY DAY (why??) and see how many 'likes' and comments they will get.

It is SOOO stupid to me and I agree that it is a way for people to stay disconnected physically; it makes us androids.

It is a popularity contest, as one poster stated.

Finally I feel normal, around people (here) that agree with me on this.

So many times I have done the same thing; tried to post things of substance (news links, controversial, topics, debate, etc) and I get TOTALLY IGNORED on there (crickets)

But then 5 seconds later, someone will put "Bout to get off work and make dinner. Yummy!"

Then 10 seconds later, "I hate washing dishes. Ughhh!"

Then 20 seconds later, "Headed to Walmart"

IT IS INSANE

Ya know, I have NEVER, not even when I first opened the Facebook account, EVER, typed stupidity like that. i have ALWAYS only wanted to share knowledge, gain knowledge, or have an open discussion about things like religion, philosophy, space exploration, NWO.....ya know, like on here.

I have always been ignored, each and every time.

ATS, this thread has given me the courage to disconnect from FB ( I did feel like I wasn't going to be part of the crowd if I did, but heck, I'm not part of that crowd anyway) and keep with more intellectual company.

Thanks for this thread!!!!!

So very true!!

I have to admit that I am still holding on to my account "to keep in touch with old friends" but I have realized that is a lame excuse, even though it sounds good.

You are right, if we were to see these same 'friends' in the store or in the street, we will say "Hello. How ya been? That's good. Well take care. Nice seeing you!" and then go on our merry way.

Well said!!!!

Fakebook and other social networking sites are stealing the substance out of the human experience and redirecting energies into the electronic experience...

We will one day be machines...

This is exactly how I feel about Facebook too! It is supposed to bring people together but if anything it pushes them apart.

Before facebook, I would bump into someone I hadn't seen in years and be really pleased to see them and have a good chat. Now I have 400+ hundred facebook friends (who I know 99% of in real life) and I hardly say a word to any of them. If I bump into them in the street now, the magic is gone because we could have talked any time on facebook.

I have even had people who I once called 'close friends', remove me because I never write any meaningless crap on their wall or mine. I have stopped my facebook account many times for this reason but I always end up reactivating it when I am feeling a bit bored.

The greatest thing about facebook is the SCRABBLE app...

Why don't you actually meet with people too discuss things like that? People typically don't want to go onto a social site, where they want to just unwind for a few minutes, to be hit with conspiracy theories and philosophy. Besides, Facebook is probably the worst place to discuss religion, philosophy, and other such things.
