Some people cant understand what some of us are talking about regarding privacy because theyve only been in the net for a few years.
I have been on the internet since it became mainstream, around 1996 or so and from then up until around 2005, giving out ANY personal information, names, addresses, pics, phone numbers etc.. was not only taboo, it was absolutely discouraged by EVERYONE, including the Government.

In my opinion, the Government is wanting to make the current College and HS generation, completely ignore any privacy concerns and through peer pressure, the ones that are still concerned about it "obviously have something to hide" and cant be trusted.
And we all know what the Govt wants us do to about people that we believe have something to hide, "If you see something, say something".

Facebook began as a social conditioning experiment thats turned into a social conditioning mainstay.

I am still waiting for the uprisings in the ME to be labeled "the Great Facebook Rebellions"

If such a thing happened in the US or England, Facebook would be a gold mine of information for the Government.

Facebook, ATS, ESPN, Sexbook, YouPorn --- does it really matter? People like what they like. If you're not addicted to one, then you're probably addicted to another.

I got off of facebook for 3 reasons:
1. It is a tool used by big brother to tie you to criminals and outlaws. Know a palestinian, get on the terrorist list.
2. Who cares what some idiot from high school had for lunch. Dribble.
3. Opinions are not welcome by so called friends. Nobody has the guts to debate.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Facebook. Sounds to me like it's a personal gripe you have with it? I think you'll find that if you talk about any contrevertial topics on things like FB, or even on here, you'll end up getting kicked off the site.

Monkeys are social creatures, they LOVE to chat and gossip and in general feed their own self importance.

Till an even better way comes to do it then facebook, Facebook will thrive.

I visit it once a day or so, flip my "Everything cards", check out what my "Friends are up to" maybe post something silly and its all over in about 15 minutes.

Not what I would call an addiction but others live there.

I disagree...

Here we can talk and debate.

On FB, you are doomed to feel like an outsider just because you don't post those stupid one-liners

" Goodmorning FB, just got out of the shower and headed to work"

45 likes 29 comments

And to the poster that said something about me knowing better than to debate or discuss religion, understand that the FB Church of God and Christ love to tell people to 'praise' or 'thank god'.

They say arrogant things like, 'thank god that I passed my chemistry exam'

And that's all fine, but we should be able to ask them about their god or ask why (since they are able to wish things into existence) do they waste that 'power' on passing chemistry exams or closing on a house, instead of world peace, end diseases, etc...

(BTW, I replied to a FB poster that very question
. I hate that!)

Funny, but not far from the truth, IMO.

1. I have several Palestinian, Israeli and Syrian friends on facebook and I'm not on a terrorist watch list.
2. There's a function called "hide" so you don't have to see what everyone is doing and make your feed pertinent to what you want to view.
3. Sorry, but there are tons of groups that are on facebook for the simple purpose of debating topics. I also have tons of debates with my friends from everything from politics to sports to Saturday night plans.

Facebook is what you make it. You don't want to see that kid from high-schools lunch menu? Unfriend, ignore or hide his status. Hell, you can make it so you only see what your closest 3 friends are doing if you want...

I check out Facebook daily, but I don't get obsessive about it. I worked overseas for four years and made some good friends who are thousands of miles away in Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. Most of us don't post daily, but just use it to keep in touch and let others know of major issues.

Just to throw my own personal take in the ring:

I use Facebook to keep "tabs" on people that I otherwise would have no clue as to what they are doing. I know people would say, "Pick up the phone," or something like that, but I also would not pick up a phone to conversate with them either. I know this sounds bad, but I'm sure we all have those people in our lives that were once a big part of it but have gone our separate ways. Wouldn't you like to at least know what they are up to from time to time? Well, that's mainly what I use Facebook for. I don't play games, poke people, send umpteen million app requests, etc. I just let people know what I'm up to, what issues I find important, and keep up on what others are doing (love looking at the pics). I pretty much use it for what it was originally intended--staying connected with friends.

Sure, I have friends on there I see on a regular basis. To be honest, I don't talk to them as much on Facebook because, obviously, I see them all the time.

Wow some people need to lighten up a little bit. Facebook is not this demon some of you make it out to be. I use it to post important information that the MSM does not report. Granted most people on there don't give a rats a$$ if the world was ending as long as they looked good and got a bunch of likes and comments, but a few people have thanked me for 'enlightening' them. Plus its a good way for my Environmental Conservancy group The Ditch Bank Bandits to be heard.

I do agree that a lot of people get way too carried away with it, but just like the movie "Anything Else", it's like anything else. Why do you think we have rehabs for any and everything from drinking to gaming? Humans are strange and we learn through repitition, which is exactly what TPTB exploit with.

I will always support a medium in which the small man can have a big voice and information can be easily shared. Don't get me wrong though, my name is still Antimatter!

I have to admit, I do have a FB account. At first, it was interesting, but as time went by, I found that I use it for the Farmville, and Mafia wars. Thats about it. Matter of fact, my g/friend and I have been discussing getting off the " grid " as much as we possibly can, and were discussing " unplugging " from social sites like FB, Myspace etc.

Further, if you notice, alot of social sites, do have way to much openness. Just saw a article about how in some cases, the Patriot Act allows for undisclosed actions to its users on FB. Now I don't know if thats true or not, but it would seem legit considering the PAct is a breach of our rights in all degrees.

Anyhow, can here the " whining " down of the PC after shutting it off at the power surge already!

"

"quote.

I beg to differ. There are enough ex members of ATS who will tell you that if you debate and argue your case too strongly, shall we say, then you will end up post banned or even thrown off the site. Check out Youtube and watch some of the anti ATS videos and the comments made below them. Its quite easy to let your passions run high and say something not within the realms of T&C. The worse thing is most of the time its simply not worth bothering about...

If I hadnt had facebook OP I would have never found my friend that I had when I was like nine years old.

So I disagree. Facebook is great. Just dont overuse it like an idiot.

The one thing I will agree on, is that alot of people on ATS including myself push " rights ". I for one hold the Freedom of speech in the highest regard. You would think a site much like this one, that discusses topics of that nature would allow for uncontrolled discussion, regardless of the direction the conversation goes. Those people would in fact be exercising the Speech Freedoms. And yet, sites use " private site " as the premise to ban, or boot ppl off the site. Much like the Federal Reserve, privately owned, " so there" type of feeling.

My experience with ATS has been positive for the most part. The mods for the most part are unbiased, and add to the enlightening conversations. But there are a few bad apples, and if you engage in a debate with a mods " friends " you get warned, points taken from you ( big deal ), etc.

Anyways, back on topic, FB allows for way to much information, that you willingly " hand over " . Thats spell trouble to me, especially with the Patriot Act floating around.

I started on xanga, had a myspace, and a facebook back when it was for college students only, and I was the first person I knew of to delete all of it and never look back, for a few reasons.

1. Anyone I actually talk to or want to talk to I use my phone
2. Its insanely narcissistic
3. people you dont like or want to talk to can stalk you VERY easy
4. employers try to look up bad things about you on here before they hire you
5. its 99% useless dribble and the EXACT SAME pictures/comments over and over and over and over and.....
6. leads to a lot of trouble in relationships (but it can also start new ones I guess)
7. lets your family know things about you that you probably dont want them to know, and if you dont "friend" them your an a-hole
8. between facebook and smartphones big brother knows EVERYTHING about you (and you guys with accounts call your selfs ATS'ers?)
9. few other reasons I forgot while typing this lol.

I think the only thing I miss about these sites is that it makes it a lot easier to meet new women, but most of the ones on there are the kinds I dont want to meet anyway.

Whats really funny is how back in the day it used to be "whats your phone number" then it turned to "whats your AIM name?" then "whats your email" and now its "whats your facebook?" when meeting new people, and it really throws them for a loop when you say you dont have one

I lead a busy life and FB is a great way for my family and friends to learn what's new and see pics of the kids and other stuff. It's real strength is that most people are members, at least in my world, so all my friends and family can get updates from me with a few simple clicks.

FB is like Google, btw, it isn't going anywhere anytime soon... as in when my mom has joined something online it's a pretty good indicator for its long lasting, mass appeal.

Edit to add: Wow! Do folks know how to use Facebook? I'll give you a hint, and the same goes for ATS... unless you are fully prepared to talk about your status updates or conspiracy theories to your boss, your mom, and your kids... THEN DON'T MAKE THEM PUBLIC! For a conspiracy site it's astonishing that you actually think you're anonymous here.... you are NOT anonymous anywhere on the net. Even with the best tools for hiding, you're still not safe. I should know, I've worked for the Internet companies that create nasty little tracking tools for "advertisers."

Another edit to add: Those that believe people who use FB give away too much information, how's this little thought: It's the 21st century and you better own your identity online otherwise someone else will own it for you. It's kinda like politics, you best define your message otherwise someone else will tell the world who you are. Like I said, nothing is anonymous.

edit on 6-4-2011 by Jason88 because: Wake up people. You are all traceable on FB and ATS.
