The list does not take into account technological advantages one country may have over another (nor nuclear power). It just bases its final conclusion on pure numbers. In reality, you can have all the numbers in the world, but the one who is more technologically advanced has better odds in the long run.

Lol. Nope. All the US would have to do is sucker nuke the UK, and we would win.

There is an advantage to being a country the size of a continent fighting a country the size of a medium sized state.

True, however most of our army is abroad so a sucker nuke wouldnt be such a bad thing
maybe then we could all go and live somewhere with better weather!!!

The numbers themselves are meaningless. It doesn't matter how many people you have in uniform if half of them are conscripts who do not know what they are doing and have little ttraining. It doesn't matter how many F-4 fighters upi have in Iran if you can't keep even 20% of them flying for lack of spare parts.

History is full of examples of numerically inferior forces routing a larger opposition. Whetyer it is Alexander the Great routing all of Persia to the completey outgunned Yankees beating the world's foremost super power (with a little help (cough) from France. The Spanish Armada wipes out by the British. Anybody at all, combined or separately, against Israel.

The numbers themselves don't mean much so if your country is low on ty=he list, it could be that quality more than makes up for it.

According to the latest report of the IISS (International Institute Of Strategic Studies) North Korea's military ranks as the fourth-largest in the world, with only China, the United States and India ahead of it, and NOT ranked 20th as you had mentioned.

How the hell is India stronger than UK thats impossible lmfao

Impossible? Just get down from your high horse and smell mother Earth. The British days of rule and domination are over!

Having said that, check out how India is miles ahead of the UK:

UK____________________________________ India

Army - 107,000______________________1,325,000 Res 1,155,000

Navy - 39,400 _______________________55,000

Air Force - 48,700_____________________170,000

India's Defence budget 2011-2012 is $ 35 Billion. However, UK Defence budget 2011-2012 is marginally higher at £33.8bn.

Indian Army, per soldier, is less well trained than the British and certainly less well equipped.

We also have substantial reserves which you omitted from the list. The Royal Navy is, by far, more advanced than India's who seem to sail alot of 2nd hand warships as opposed to building their own. The same applies to their Air Force. On top of all that, the UK produces the vast majority of it's own equipment, where as India, while it is developing it's indigineous capability, lacks far behind.

Also, you compare the Indian budget in dollars to the Uk one in pounds. The UK defence budget figures you quote are also wrong. The budget for 2012 is £48.2 Billion, which in today's money is $77.36 Billion. India's is, for FY 2011, $36 Billion. Not even close.

I think the list, being based purely on size, is wrong. Many other factors come into play other than pure numbers, such as tech, doctrine and training.

India also imports everything. n fact it is the largest arms buyer in the world - and a lot is imported from Israel.

The most important thing with regards to military power is logistics capability, this doesn't take that into account at all. Having lots of poorly trained soldiers with low quality equipment doesn't make you powerful. Fact is only US, UK, France and Russia really have the ability to deploy troops on the other side of the world in meaningful numbers. It is completely laughable that India is so high up that list, was the list compiled by a schoolboy?

It would be surprising if India did not buy arms from Israel who is a major arms exporter, although Russia remains India's favourite provider of military goods and services, as the BBC article states...

BBC report

India’s making serious efforts to develop an indigenous defence industry. The current competition for the supply of a medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) to India comes with some significant industrial offsets and I think we will see the successful aircraft being used to further develop local expertise and capability, perhaps including local production / assembly. This happened with the deal to supply the advanced jet trainer which has the BAE’s Hawk being licences built in India.

For interest, India’s MMRCA contenders are:
JAS 39NG(IN) Gripen – SAAB of Sweden and BAE of the UK
Typhoon – Eurofighter of the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy
Rafale - Dassault of France
F16(IN) Fighting Falcon – Lockheed of the US
F/A18E/F(IN) Super Hornet – Boeing of the US

Interesting to note that over Libya both the Typhoon and Rafale are strutting their funky stuff. Just wonder where the representative of the Indian defence procurement department is sitting!

Regards

Israel gets that all from America and Europe. Just a go between.

Like everything thats made in china they may have a lot of it, but it is absolute CRAP. They are no where near as technologically advanced as Russia. there air force is old Russian tech.

May be the case but in troop numbers China double Russia easily.

TheImmaculateD1, you're such a lousy whiner! Get over it for heaven's sake.. Your points are simply invalid as you clearly don't understand what an army strength is all about.

Is there a single military force on earth which is totally independent and does not import weapons? Other than maybe the US and Russia, I believe such a thing does not exist. It doesn't even matter tho.. You can cry as much as you want about how "unfair" the list is as long as Israel buys weapons instead of producing them (worst damn argument I have ever heard of) but it won't change the fact that Israel is a force stronger than most nations who don't import as much - say, Iran, or Sweden for extreme examples.

As for the original list - highly inaccurate.
India above France, UK and Germany?
Taiwan and Indonesia above Iran and North Korea?
Doesn't make any sense.. sorry.

What I said is crucial because you could have the largest military in troop numbers but if your supplies run out in months how effective could your troops be?

Sweden has a manufacturing base spearheaded by the likes of Saab, Scania, Volvo Cars, Volvo Commercial Vehicles and Koenigsegg which means if needed then each facility can be converted very easily to handle weapons and arms manufacturing and be able to sustain the nation in house for a couple of years meaning they can support and defend themselves internally without having to require on anyone.

$15 Billion up for grabs for 120 MRCA! I bet India is gonna select the Rafale and/or the Euro fighter. The US of A is going hell for leather to unload their obsolete F-18 Hornets (Even the US of A has stopped their manufacture) and F-16s.

You say that the Indian Army soldiers are poorly trained as compared to the British? This is total hogwash and so far from reality, it makes me laugh!

Did you know the Indian Army is training US forces in counter insurgency and jungle warfare?

Indo-US army exercise at the Indian Army's Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS), at Vairengete, Mizoram where American troops are being trained. Eleven countries including France, Uzbekistan and Italy are seeking permission to have soldiers trained in guerrilla warfare at the school by the Indian Army.

Poorly trained? Nope! The Indian Army trains the trainers!

Regiments of the Indian Army are stationed permanently at inhospitable heights of 21,000 feet and more at the Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world! Get the British there and let's see how long they'll last!

Patrolling at 18,000 ft, Siachen Glacier

In the recent Kargil war, the Indian Army routed the Pakistani Forces who were sitting atop heights ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 feet, climbing 1500 ft vertical cliff faces at temperatures touching minus 40 degrees Celsius and clobbering them in hand to hand combat!! Let's know which army can do that!

Here's the Indian Army song - I am a warrior and this is my song!

So, what about the British soldiers? Oh yes, they fought the Iraqi Army and won the war!!
Anyone would, against a rag tag circus! Where else? Oh yeah - as UN peace keepers!

India like Nepal, Tibet, Myanmar, Bangladesh all co share The Himalayan Mountain Range which is the most treacherous mountain range on the entire planet.

It is more treacherous and more dangerous then both the Rockies and Appalachian Mountain Ranges combined as the top like mile is almost nothing but ice and snow. The Mojave Desert is where we train for combat for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Just because the British have a couple of Trident subs, doesn't make them the Jedi!
It takes a lot more than that to win a war! What military capabilities? It's the man behind the machine that counts! And the biggest force multiplier!

Fact remains is that Britian held it's empire for over 1,000 yrs so far without a match.
