The Republicans claim they stand for limited government, individual liberty and privacy

YET push for THIS.....

CNET just sent this in

GOP pushing for ISPs to record user data

The House Republicans' first major technology initiative is about to be unveiled: a push to force Internet companies to keep track of what their users are doing.

A House panel chaired by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow morning to discuss forcing Internet providers, and perhaps Web companies as well, to store records of their users' activities for later review by police.

One focus will be on reviving a dormant proposal for data retention that would require companies to store Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for two years

A Judiciary committee aide provided a statement this afternoon saying "the purpose of this hearing is to examine the need for retention of certain data by Internet service providers to facilitate law enforcement investigations of Internet child pornography and other Internet crimes," but declined to elaborate.

Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow morning to discuss forcing ISPs to store records of their users' activities for later review by police.

Thanks to the GOP takeover of the House, the odds of such legislation advancing have markedly increased.

The new chairman of the House Judiciary committee is Lamar Smith of Texas, who previously introduced a data retention bill. Sensenbrenner, the new head of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, had similar plans but never introduced legislation.

FYI

A 1996 federal law called the Electronic Communication Transactional Records Act regulates data preservation. It requires Internet providers to retain any "record" in their possession for 90 days "upon the request of a governmental entity

I dont get it...

Wasnt it the Republicans who were crying about liberties being taken away?
Didnt the Democrats also push for freedoms and liberties?

Is this not stripping liberties away what they want to do now?

Yes, you are correct. Which is why I am utterly confused and angry!

I've had enough with our government. They can't do anything right. They should be working FOR us, not against us.

I'm not sure what rights this bill is taking away from someone. Just forcing the ISP's to keep their data longer, which I'm sure they already keep records. You should be more concerned about bill that will give Obama emergency control over the US Internet with the ability to cut off private computers.

Bill would give President emergency control over the Internet

Snippet

GOP "Pledge to America"

In a self-governing society, the only bulwark against the power of the state is the consent of the governed, and regarding the policies of the current government, the governed do not consent.

An arrogant and out-of-touch government of self-appointed elites makes decisions, issues mandates, and enacts laws without accepting or requesting the input of the many.

We pledge to advance policies that promote greater liberty, wider opportunity, a robust defense, and national economic prosperity.

Washington's heavy-handed approach is not working.

......

Just words!

T'is why I'm an "Indy/GDI/sick of them all" type of guy.

For Freedoms!!!

We need the nanny state to protect you

The communist liberals doing this, just wait until the TEA party gets wind of this!

Its a free world, you are free not to use the internet, or get a job or two, don't be lazy.

Socialist Maoists are forcing companies to do this, this is why communism is bad!!!

You really can't see the difference between tracking and shutting down completely? How's that kool-aid tasting?

But "tracking" is just as insidious. Freedom means me looking at ATS, or naked-porn, or anti-government, or even pro-government sites without any monitoring. Why do they need to monitor?

Knowing them, what they probably want it for is blackmail and coercion and "insurance." Could very well explain why this country is so paralyzed at all levels and from all directions. Just look what happens to whistle blowers and potential ones. They worry so much about this yet still leave our ports and borders virtually wide open. Which is more important to security?

Isn't it the GOP Conservatives always saying "if you got nothing to hide; what's the big deal if we spy on you"
This has been part of their agenda all along to as they hypocritically force the "Patriot Act" DHS, and actually take away more freedoms in their march to Fascism and complete corporate control.

Its not about protection, its about monitoring/watching you, collecting/keeping your online activity/data for a time frame

They are only gonna shoot themselves in the foot on this one. If this turd gets passed they will be quite shocked to see that even more government employees (on top of the Pentagon debacle) are engaged in the download and trade of kiddie-porn and other illegal activities. That will be one black day for the gov't for sure!

The US Government will NEVER shut down the internet completely

The entire US economy and World economy relies on the net these days

Commerce/trade/Businesses/companies
Education
Electricity
Water
Transport (automobiles, trains, lights, planes)
Medical
Telecommunication

The bill you refer to is about in case of a high tech they cant stop it cyber terrorist attack
Where if need be, they have the authority to shut down services to protect the nation during a high tech cyber terrorist attack, if they cant hold off or stop it, the possibility of endangering millions and millions of american lives

There is a huge difference

BIG DIFFERENCE between that bill and hat the GOP are pushing for...

You're every move, every conversation, every purchase and now you every key stroke and mouse click is being recorded and kept for a time period, just in case they and/or the police need them

Guilty until proven innocent

Liberties gone

At this point in time, I dont really see any difference here between the two parties, both are behaving the same way.... The Republicans have their name behind this one, thats all..... Obama did a complete 360 on the Whistleblower bill last year.. He went from; full support and protection for civil servants lifting the lid within departments for open transparency, to a total crack down, shut down just before congress signed off for the holidays 2010

This bill will enable those in power to more quickly use the information they already have at their fingertips.

This will remove the need for probable cause as it will be mandated that they have 24/7 real time access. The chance they will use this power to police themselves isn't even remote.

SHOW THEM WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO SEE

Sir, I am suggesting that communist liberals are destroying America with their love for big business and the State. If the government would just stay the FRELL out of their business there would be no reason for the companies to do this. This is what regulationaries do, they push controls and force private business's to create corrupt profit schemes. No government no ISP control because the companies would be free to make no ISP control!Once the GOP takes the Senate and the presidency things like this will stop because their will be freedom. If you love freedom, there is such a thing as freedom and people who do not love freedom don't love freedom. Once the liberals are gone freedom to not monitor ISP for profit will be gone and then the Maoists will be defeated!!!
