The face of my enemy is printed on every coin and every paper bill note. "Money, so they say, is the root of all evil!" Pink Floyd. The face of my enemy is on national TV, "politicians who needs them", gutless liers all. George Papandreou (supposedly left wing socialist), one year ago, before the elections: "Money is plentiful". George Papandreou, one year later, "the state coffers are empty, ransacked by the previous Prime Minister (Konstantin Karamanlis, right wing)". The Siemens buy off of politicians scandal is still unresolved; nobody will ever be punished. Of course, God forbid that someone like me owes money, then it's jail time if I can't pay up.

Excellent post. You brought together what most of us know, but didn't sum up like that. I'm a little younger, and I remember being in middle school when 9/11 happened. Until about two years ago, I kind of assumed all Muslims were terrorists among other things. Unfortunately most people my age at that time probably still do and always will.

i thought it was me but you said it also life was better back then during the early late 80's and 90's. both bushes have managed to destroy whatever good there was in n. america.

they are the personification of evil. all they have is hate and war in their system. they are human garbage. as the world crumbles because of their actions, they're safe and secure in their houses sitting by the fire with their loved ones, while iraqi's bury their kids. and americans are continuingly having their freedom challenged by the fear and paranoia their propaganda has unleashed on americas citizens.

i hope God has a special place in hell for both of them.

I don't see Al Queda as a bogey men. I do see Islam as a threat to my way of life, BUT

The real enemy is corporate control of our government.

It is the people hiding behind the mask of institutions. T

The idea that greed is good sold to the people by Ronald Reagan, as the free market

More importantly, the terrible things people are willing to do to others, when told to do so by these very same institutions.

fantastic mate star and flag.

It clearly seems that they always have an enemy, to put us all under the spell of fear.

but we the people, are well informed these days and will not give in to their fears.

let us believe in our selves and respect each other.

I really like this thread. As long as we all remember to look into a mirror every once in a while, we may just realize that the image staring back has free will. As soon as we all grasp and respect our own free will and the free will of others, the boogie man can finally hibernate indefinitely (I hope!)

EXCELLENT post! Well thought-out and beautifully presented.

Being born in the early 50's I remember the "drills" at school and a whole lot more that I wish I didn't. There are also things that I miss dearly from a time I view as much, much simpler.

I look around at the world (and my country) today and feel like I'm in a waking nightmare.

Keep up the good work, Heff. Your posts are always a pleasure to read.

Thank you for taking the time to make an eloquent and well thought out thread. S&F (if it matters).

I attended the first as far as I know underground high-school in the US, built ca 1962. United High School, Laredo, TX. Near a SAC base at the time. When we asked why we couldn't have windows in the classrooms, it was explained to us. The Red scare, the commies will nuke us. So I grew up in a similar time-frame as you.

I couldn't understand when Bill Clinton started coming up with all these deals with the ChiComs, North Vietnam, etc, etc...

My son came home from high school in the late 90's, talking like this ChiCom stuff was great! The teachers were pushing it, and anyone opposed was anti-capitalism! He said I was just talking propaganda! (Well, he was a stepson so Mom got in the way there baaahhh!). Now look where we are.

Jobs outsourced to the MAX!!! We wonder why we're in trouble with jobs! I was one of the bitchy ones back in the 90's. WTF LOL KMA! No manufacturing here anymore LOL (not), ChiComs got all our nuke and satellite secrets from Bubba and his demo cohorts.

Any vets out there wonder why we sent 58,600 folks to "officially" die in VietNam to fight the commies, and many more to die in the aftermath w/ agent orange, mental probs and such?
Now the commies are our buds, and "favored trade partners".

The new boogieman is the Islamic, or homegrown US boy, or veteran who spoke too loudly, etc.......

Just sayin' Heff, spot on with the thread!

Terrorists have made very little inroads into our world, but we have nearlt destroyed much of theirs.
The real terrorists are not in alqueda.
The real terrorists are running our newspapers, our banks, our goverments.
It is an ever puzzling thing to me,how we allow the elite to usurp our world and its resources in order to destroy and kill.
With what resources we have thrown away in wars, we could have had world of equality, and planty for all.
Even just the money alone, if dropped like bombs on the populace of our enemies, in packets of a thousand or so,would have made friends instead of subjects of the people we have invaded.
The kicker is there would have been plenty left over for progress too!

The Greatest and most feared Enemy for the US right now is not Red, Nip, Rushkie, Terrorist or even carries a Gun or Nuke. The most feared Person has an IP Address and may or may not be armed with a Camera. The Pen is mightier than the Sword and the Camera is mightier than the Pen, except I'd rather be attacked by a guy with a Camera then a Guy with a Sword.

the OP makes an excellent point but I think many may overlook what is just past the obvious. the OP points out that the wealth & power in charge feed the public a never-ending stream of Evil Monkeys living in the closet. there is a non-stop Common Enemy for us to group identify and mass-hate. I think an important underlying point is that, time and time again, people have fear for/against Common Enemy and thoughts of what may come that do not come to fruition (thankfully).
Seriously, there is a huge waste of worry directed at things that never take place. It is wise to be prepared for come what may and to keep one's eye & ears open. It is also wise to try to avoid being pulled apart emotionally by the constant barrage of horror, bad news and speculation that the media feeds the people and that the government feeds the media. Above all else, let common sense prevail.
People only have the power over you that you allow them to have. If you let people who tell tales of things scare you into paranoia, discomfort and hopelessness then you have lost the war before the first battle has begun.
Reminds me of a lyric from an old Creedence Clearwater Revival tune; something like "..believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.." - That line, to me, always reeked of good old-fashioned common sense.

Good read S+F! I grew up in the tail end of the cold war, and remember the wall going down. Then both Iraq wars, and 9/11 then Afghanistan, so I can relate about how they hyped up the enemy. I agree that our enemy can indeed be found in the mirror, but collectively, at least in the US, the face of our enemy is the FED.

Who you callin' "old"

I'm "mid life crisis" aged at the worst!

And in general... to all:

Thank you so much for your comments and contributions! I am soaking them all in but it seems, to me, that most of us are away of the illusion of "enemy" and this is a very positive fact that speaks volumes about our hopes as a species and as a collection of societies.

You did a great job of laying out the party line no doubt about that. But anyone who knows the truth was probably left waiting for it when you were finished but the truth never came, so I'll just add it here in case anyone wants to know. The real enemy, the real people who are taking all of your freedoms away, are not and never have been cave dwellers with box cutters. The real people who want to take away all of your civil liberties and turn the world into one giant police state can be found much closer to home. They are people of various religions in various political parties but in all cases their religion or party affiliation is nothing but a mask of convenience to enable them to more easily lead you astray, to distract you, to take your attention away from the truth of who they really are and what they are really doing - while they implement their agenda of totalitarian enslavement right before your eyes - and give you the bill to pay for it. If you wish to learn the truth a link is below and you can see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Excellent thread bro!

It reminds me of how Michael Moore presented the terror situation in Farenheit 911. Obviously a different approach and better write up, however. Star and flag! (like it doesn't have enough already, lol).

What a sad but beautiful post. So unfortunately true. You have done a stellar job. Made me ashamed, made me cry, made me proud to be a member here where I can rub elbows, so to speak, with a thoughtful well spoken person such as yourself.
