Yes this is pretty normal, its one of the most active quake areas in the world approx 30 minor and very-minor size Mag 3-4, Mag 2-3) quakes a day, a 5 about once every month.
But Its not so much the timing thats important its the locations, its a decent sized area, about the size of New Zealand, Japan or California.

If you like the Aegean area you can also follow it here www.gein.noa.gr...
they are a little slow putting events up, sort of once a day updating
no maps on that one, but they have 4+ events here www.gein.noa.gr...

It was probably around 40 miles from me. Not right next door, but closer than most of any size. Usually anything over 2.0 is out in the sound or further south. It was deeper than most around here too. I did NOT feel it.

Your guys 4.4 beats out my 3.0!!!

The Aegean Sea has a number of quakes. This is the cumulative for the past 365 days

It is building a little at present but that is because this is the time of year in that area where once every three years approximately they have a bigger earthquake. I am expecting a 7 to 7.5 there sometime before the end of Feb or thereabouts. I did mention this several months ago in QW 2010.

Edit to say: Mind you I am probably completely wrong!!

edit on 8/1/2011 by PuterMan because: Look here edit box, I gave the reason above. Are you blind or what?

Further edit to say: This is the link to my rash statement.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Actually I said

There will be 6 more 7+ and an 8.3 by the end of this year.

and

between a 6.5 and 7.3 in Greece

so I will stick with that - then I can be slightly less wrong (see below)

There were only 4 x 7+

c0000rxc, 2010-12-21T17:19:40.000Z, 26.892, 143.7257, 7.4, Bonin Islands. Japan region
a00043nx, 2010-10-25T14:42:22.000Z, -3.4841, 100.1138 ,7.7 ,Kepulauan Mentawai region. Indonesia
2010bubv, 2010-09-29T17:11:24.000Z ,-4.9201 ,133.7833 , 7.2 ,near the south coast of Papua. Indonesia
2010atbj, 2010-09-03T16:35:46.000Z, -43.53, 172.12, 7.0, South Island of New Zealand

and no mag 8+

Which only goes to show just how wrong one can be and how difficult it is to 'predict' earthquake and that you should be completely ignoring what I am saying!

And yet another edit to say: Thought you might like this graph from October onwards. Shows the later details better.

What I think is that I could only see a couple of those as all the others came up as missing links like me.

It is no good linking to the _12 or _24 plots I have discovered since not only do they often not work at all but they come to the end of their shelf like very rapidly.

Are you using EMSC data?

This may be of interest to Shenon

The following is based on data picked up by the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens for Greece, the Aegean, bits of Turkey, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Albania

Map of earthquake in the Aegean/Greece area last 30 days

Interactive Map of same

KMZ file for that
dl.dropbox.com...

This graph shows all the events on that list over the 30 days

This one shows the daily totals (same list)

I tried to locate the nearest names of each event to put on the tags using PNF and Geonames but it took 14 minutes and when the results came back and I checked them against Google Maps they didn't match up at all, maybe I had the search settings wrong.

I been to the area 3 times over the years, love the place, been from coast to coast and through the mountains, up to Turkey and I never felt a quake once when I was there though

Sorry about that. I forgot that the PNSN plots 'go away'. The Rainier plot links are still good.

If you are still interested in seeing the seismos. go HERE

and then just open up the siesmos I listed in the other post, look at the 24 or 1 day ago plots. Some are pretty interesting. Looks like we have had several micro quakes the last couple days, but there aren't any listed.

EDIT TO ADD: After looking at more, I am especially interested to see what you have to say about SHUKSAN. On the PNSN it is SHUK and if you go HERE

It is the second one down. This is also quite close to me, just East of Baker.

and pretty much each time we went, we felt a quake/tremor!

I hope they downgrade it, and I hope nothing big happens that way. It's been too active for my liking. Believe me, we have enough flooding and rain to put up with in Queensland, we don't need tsunami threats on top of it.

Speedy Gonzales! You beat me to it!

What are you using for notification?

I caught UW out last night reusing earthquake ID numbers (unintentionally). That is now 4 times on three networks in the last year.

Speedy Gonzales! You beat me to it!

What are you using for notification?

I caught UW out last night reusing earthquake ID numbers (unintentionally). That is now 4 times on three networks in the last year.

I only noticed that one quickly because I had the Geonet main drum on my screen www.geonet.org.nz... at the time and it was showing a ghostly line from north to south of the country which usually indicates a big event somewhere around the Kermadec / Tonga / Vanuatu / Fiji region... usually I rely on eQuake.
