This is most disturbing to find out that the UK Government are allowing a company in there country to manufacture materials and smuggle them to Iran in that could possibly be used in a Nuclear Reactor!

I thought the UK were trying to stop and prevent such things from happening?

Why would the UK Government be allowing this to happen?

They are more or less helping Iran to manufacture a nuclear reactor. Or, should I say, its quite possible that they are helping them.

(S) A well-connected Iranian businessman who owns a
Baku-based oil services company told Baku Iran watcher that a
company called "INSULTEC," owned by UK citizens of Indian
origin, has secretly provided cladding, thermal insulation,
and ancillary equipment to the government of Iran in a
variety of shipments via Turkey and the U.A.E. According to
the Baku source, whose company operates in Russia,
Kazakhstan, and the U.A.E. as well as Azerbaijan, the
materials allegedly sent by INSULTEC in falsely labeled
containers were of type that could be used in nuclear reactor
construction. Citing old Iran and Dubai based business
friends allegedly familiar with the issue, the source said
that INSULTEC has maintained a sanctions-evading relationship
with Iranian government companies for some time. Source said
that the company was officially headquartered in the U.K.,
and has offices in Germany, the USA, and elsewhere, its
manufacturing base and the bulk of its staff are in India.

Does this mean that the UK knew about it and if so why didn't they do something about it? These governments will have a lot of questions to answer, that's for sure.

Here we go, someone posting the good stuff. S+F for you. This is the type of thing I'm interested in, not the gossipy cables that call Sarkozy an "emperor without clothes." Give me the "history changing" events!

For my own part, I'm glad it wasn't a U.S. based business. I think companies based here do enough horrible things already.

This is a prime example of globalism in business...Indian (i asume east)decent owners of a birtish company...
In this day and age of foriegn ownership the chances of getting away with these type of scams is excellent.
The problem of foriegners using a homegrown asset for misadventures is growing, and the intelligence services will increasingly find that they are going to have a hard time even reporting this stuff to a "loyal"goverment.
The globalisation of business has brought with it a very complex situation that the planners never planned for.
The criminal schemes of non citizens carried out within the normal business of a company in another country
which they control...what better blind to use to support all kinds of nefarious plots.?

While definitely disconcerting, it shouldn't surprise anyone that a corporate interest would sell to the highest bidder . . . it ain't about love of country, national pride, looking out for the little guy or anything like that.

It is all about profit.

There isn't an inhabitant of a board room out there who wouldn't sell their sister to a motorcycle gang during 'splash week' if it meant profitiability for years going forward.

And selling anything nuclear related to Iran does just that . . . guaranteed market, folks.

Corporate whores.

NO surprise to me.

Just can't wait to see who gets added to the list in the next few days.

It is disturbing because when the rest of the world are putting sanctions on this country, The United Kingdom are supplying Iran with the resources to build these nuclear reactors.

And not just that, they are in India, USA and other countries who also seem to think the Iranians with nuclear power are a threat to humanity. Where is the logic?

If this is true, every sanction on Iran should be lifted as the people pushing for them are the people causing the problem in the 1st place.

The company is only registered in UK, the goods could have been sent from some of the other countries mentioned.

The government in power now is a Tory LibDem coalition.
The government in power on 2009-03-06 (when this cable was sent) was New Labour.
So which government do you mean

On topic : It seems inconceivable to me that the government did not know about this.
Could this be a case of supplying Iran with equipment they need to build up a case for military action

That makes matters worse, that is; that the UK Government did not know about this.

Why is it disturbing?

You should say that it is disturbing to see UK being a US puppet
AND
US being the Ayatollah of UK.

UK can do what ever it wants, it has to act independently and stop bowing down to US.

It shouldn't have went to Afghanistan, nor Iraq.

I feel sorry for the British, they need to reclaim their freedom again.

Wow.

This reminds me of the so-called "iraqi supergun" that had major components built in Sheffield UK.

Ye daft bat. What is wrong with that. What in the hell do you think a nuclear power station is? A nuclear reactor. Are you saying that there is something clandestine about them supplying material for this?

The only idiots with a problem with this seem to be the Yanks.

Yes. To be registered it has to have offices in UK, and they are the HQ.
