A Megaton is the explosive force equal to that of 1 million metric tons of TNT.

A Kiloton is the explosive force equal to that of 1 thousand metric tons of TNT.

If that's what you mean.

Hopefully China will give N. Korea a time out for this. Unless China is behind this somehow, but I think NK is just flexin some muscles, or somebody "F" up.

The problem is, war -used- to be great for the economy...but now with robotics and machines creating most of the bombs and tanks..its not as much of a economy stimulator as it was 60 years ago...now it just makes a few rich people richer...

what is far more stimulating for an economy now is peacefully opening up new markets...so, a war against NK and toppling their nation would not produce much, however, a full westernizing them afterwards may..

Why this didn't pan out in the middle east is that the middle eastern nations would simply not go western on principle...NK however is not the middle east, they would gladly go west (like their southern counterparts) and stimulate both economys. I am not sure how china would respond with NK being toppled and becoming a western style nation..my immediate response is that they would not be a fan of that, however, China is not stupid and know's that having a pro-capitalist environment on their border can actually strengthen their own economy without having the reconstruction cost to get it there to begin with...so they may actually go with that plan.

interesting times...I like the korean people..good lot. I wouldn't mind seeing NK set free to make their own direction in the world.

ultimately though, I don't believe much will come of these movements..I think its over...NK got its media attention it wants, and thats that...will do something stupid in a couple years to get back in the news again.

Found the following article from soc.culture.korea usenet site. I thought it's worth paying attention.

North Korea claimed that the South fired artillery shell into the
North....South denied ...saying that they were conducted exercises
but shelling was directed away from the North.
The South counter-claimed that the North shelled the Yeonpyeong island
and killed two marines.

Who has good reason to fire artillery shells ...into both the North
and South ?

The USA.

The US want badly to create tension between the Koreans....a few
shells aimed at both North and South ...would start them fighting. If
they fight, the US has the most to gain. This is exactly what
happened when the South Korean naval ship was sank...by the US marine.

I do agree with you. I just don't think it's all that impossible to happen like many people keep stating. Thing's are different. But they were different to now, like they were to the 18th and 19th century. It's not that unrealistic as many people think...

he kinda does look like the old man
somewhat

but what I find strange about that pic
is those men behind him. NK is so
anti-west but yet they have on what looks like
JC Penny suits and ties.
lmao

Hard to believe anything that comes from BIN ...they get like 98% of their "news" totally wrong to the point of being mind numbingly fantastically incorrect.

people whom read and believe everything from BIN tend to be the crazy that even crazy people call crazy..the Icke of world news...batboy approved.

Different armies/countries have differing definitions/names for Howitzers, which often leads to confusion.

This current confusion, I believe, was caused by the common understanding that artillery has a barrel, a breach, a carriage and is indeed a big gun that fires a round, whereas rocketry has a platform from which rockets are fired, they are both artillery but look very different.

Wow - an actual real topic made it on to ATS.

Well done, folks!

It's interesting to me that the USA is leading the "international community" in asking South Korea to show "diplomatic restraint".

Just like the USA did after their land was attacked? Diplomatic restraint? What a bunch of hypocrites!

US Joint Forces Command said they [Japan and South Korea] “could quickly build nuclear devices if they chose to do so.”

That is the next course of action, Japan and South Korea will prepare nuclear arsenals. Also, mentioning the above comment, Japan would not order "preparations" if there was no evidence of a growing military threat to their nation.
