Since the Marvel superhero's arrival in cinemas, progress toward recreating his exoskeleton has been steady.

What do you think about this?www.foxnews.com...

I think that unless its completely armoured it is usesless for combat.

It can lift heavy things and looks cool. It might be good for firefighters trying to get to people trapped in burning buildings, but I don't see this thing having any type of combat necessity.

Yeah imagine the cops pulling you over in an iron man suit.

They would probably cook inside the suit.

Why would they cook?

Have a coolent system in place, like a cool water circulation unit. The inside would be padded so the padding will easily hold the coolent for an extened period of time.

Pretty much put the coolent system in a space suit inside the armor and then you wouldn't have a roasted soldier.

Either figure a way out to fully armor the soldier or scrap the whole thing as a weapons project, because as is, it is useless.

Why would the cops wear one?

Like I said, the only thing I can see this being used for is rescuing people stuck in mines, burning buildings or pile ups on the highway.

it's far from useless. I believe the main idea behind these at this stage is for lifting/loading type work.

they are not built for in your face engagements, they are made to unload the trucks, food, weapons, supplies at base without as many men, and without fatigue.

seems a good idea to me

I said it was completely useless for COMBAT and that the only thing it is good for is to lift heavy things for rescue missions.

I don't see how it is a good idea to use these to load trucks though. We already have forklifts and other machinery for this and I'm sure that they are less expensive then one of these suits.

You got a point there bro.

yes... but can you imagine being able to lift every pod/missile/bomb onto the plane, walk over to the gun belts and load them, being able to unload hundreds of bags (100lb each) out of those crates the fork trucks unloaded, and stack them/put on distribution trailers, whatever with the same suit. Two guys just unloading pallets in a warehouse could probably do the work of 10 men without suits.

It's just a force multiplier. But I agree on being useless on the front lines at this point... but logistics win wars.

The only thing that made sense was unloading heavy bags off of pallets.

The rest of your examples fall under the category of forklifts (which can carry more then 1 pallet) and other machinery and they are still cheaper.

I dint know, but it seems almost plausible that if it can protect your body from, bullets, maybe there could be military application?

Thats why I said the only way it would see combat is if it was armored.

we all have to agree though... it's not much of a jump after coming this far to scale it up, put some armor, and weapons... wonder what's around the corner

It is quite obvious that none of you have served in any operating units. Forklifts are not available in the field, forward operating bases, landing zones, fueling depots, most operating ships (never on a operating flight deck), in fact almost everywhere supplies are being delivered to operating troops. These tasks are accomplished by work parties that require all hands removing them from the task at hand, namely defense of the area and ongoing operations. As stated earlier this is a force multiplier that frees up all but a few to continue the job at hand. This product ahs been in developement since the DARPA days and was never intended to be an Ironman suit. It is doubtful it will ever evolve into anything like it. Currently, the furthest evolution is thought to be used as a pack horse to help hump the increasingly heavy loads the foot soldier is tasked with, upwards of a 100 lbs as of now (thus the demonstration utilizing the pack and pushups). Once again, a force multiplier is all it is.

you only are looking at military operations, what about a simple exoskeleton from disabled or the infirm?, practical use in rescue and fire missions, where fire fighters have to carry specialist lifting or cutting gear which can be very heavy or cumbersome, having to climb hundreds of stairs in a tower block or skyscraper, carring rolls of flexi pipe, or other fire fighting materials, carry on board oxygen / water.

It also can allow paramedics to carry heavy materials, O2 etc to places where you simply could not get and ambulance or helicopter to. i.e heavily forested areas, cliffs, caves etc.

Other applications such as in forestry where getting a vehicle into impossible terrain to clear trees is not possible, using its forklift like abilities where forklifts cannot be used such as forward supply and fuel dumps,

The major issue is the power for the suit, each picture has it tethered to a power station to work, will have to make a reasonably large power source that is portable and light for it to be an efficient idea

Could be used to lift heavy materials or help build structures on the moon or some other planet we make a station at would be lighter and more efficient for shipping purposes
