What it means to be an American - Have You Forgotten?

The footage is old, the concepts are older, but they've never been more applicable than they are today.

Never forget what it is that makes America great especially as our cultural dialogue focuses and polarizes around race, religion and cultural identity.

SB 1070? 9/11 Mosques? Is Obama a Muslim? Socialism? Muslim?

Footage dates back to a 1947 documentary entitled Don't Be A Sucker produced by the US Government. I've added the comment at the end and shot the color footage.

Remember, your duty to your country is constant. It's a fundamental duty to fight for equality - both for yourself and your fellow human.

It would seem the same old united we stand, divided we fall
tactics are still being used today. What is so ironic about this
video is that it was made by the US Gov. And they are using
the same tactics today. How relevant this is. Take a watch

It is not about Left or Right, it's about liberty and equality. We better relearn that soon, or we could be in for a very dangerous decade.

Well that was a time when our government was more honest. It wasn't perfect, far from it, but it was more for the working man.

Like I always say, once JFK died so did the country.

Well that was the time when people had survived a world war and also the lobbyists had not got their vile hooks into governement. It was a time of optimism for some. Women and minorities were heavily oppressed however.

The reason things were so good at that period in history, 1932-1963, was because both parties had a Liberal, Moderate and Conservative branch.

Of course the Liberal Republicans were like Nixon, Moderate were like Eisenhower and Conservatives were like Taft.

And the Democrats had the three camps as well; Liberals were like Kennedy, Moderates like Truman and Conservatives were like Thurmond.

Excellent video; if only this type of thing would actually be shown on television or taught in schools with an actual emphasis on the lessons learned rather than a propaganda lesson.

Still though, this movie was produced in 1947, what year did segregation end again?. Clearly it didnt mean much to be an American in 1947.

Black people are the only true minority; because black people are the only minority that did not choose to be here. Everybody else knew what they were getting into. Let's break down the decision of every non-white person that decided to move to America. You are travelling to a land that was once inhabited by a native people. None of these people exist anymore, because they were dominated by asshole white people. These same asshole white people, were so lazy, that they brought people from across the ocean in chains to do their work for them. Now these same asshole white people run the entire country, and you have decided to come here. Do you think they give a # about your culture, your traditions, your language, and your equal rights?

What'd you expect? A red carpet to opportunity. And it's not just America. If I moved to Mexico with 5 kids and 7 dollars, I don't think they'd bust out the mariachi band and throw me a parade.

In addition: Asian people aren't a minority, because they have too much money. You hit a certain tax bracket and sorry, but you're not a minority anymore. If we went to war with Japan again, there would be no round-up of the Japanese; we need them out here making money. The only people going to internment camps are the NRA, because we don't need those jackoff idiots firing off rounds at the Japanese when they're trying to work. Mexicans are 5 years #ing away from not being a minority.

And back to the Native Americans. I do feel bad for them, but they had it coming. If you're living on land with as much natural resources as America, you have to at least be aware that somebody is going to come and try to take that #. You've got wood, coal, iron, copper, oil, but you haven't advanced beyond the bow and arrow?

Great video! I wish everyone would see that each of us is a member or at least one minority. We are a country made up of minorities. As the man said, "If we allow any minority to lose it's freedom by persecution or by prejudice, we are threatening our own freedom."

And yes, there are factions in the government today who are using this same tactic on the people of the US. I only hope we are smart enough to see through it and deny this rampant ignorance, prejudice and intolerance to flourish!

True egalitarian unity is something that does strengthen all, regardless of where one falls on the political spectrum. Socialism and Libertarianism both rely upon equality to fully make freedom possible.

In the United Kingdom we see this kind of division pop up from time to time too. The British National Party is a fascist and blatantly racist political organization. I'm happy to say though, their calls for division and hatred were soundly rejected in the 2010 elections here. They failed to win a single seat in all of Parliament and saw the already abysmal number of local seats they held cut in half.

Here though we have the advantage of knowing our enemy, they have their own party, and are very vocal about their desires. In the United States those that would divide and conquer your people are far more insidious, and they are found in both political parties.

This is just another reason it is so important for Americans to be informed citizens and informed voters.

What most Libertarians and Socialists don't want to acknowledge is that while they are greatly torn on economic issues they have the same underlying tendencies. While the ignorant ones may try and divide the two ideologies and make them as sworn enemies that can't be farthest from the truth.

Ron Paul acknowledged it on Morning Joe a couple months back when he said Libertarians and Progressives could work together as one. Yeah we have very strong opposing views on how to solve issues we are out of the mainstream when it comes to what issues really need to be discussed. How many mainstream ideologies do you see talking about the Trade Imbalance, Corporate dictatorship and personal freedom to the extent we(Libertarians and Socialists) do?

So what if Socialists support Egalitarian views while Libertarians support the whole population view, we agree on the problems and on personal freedom and instead of fighting over our difference why don't we work together on our agreements?

Just like the OP's main point of this post was, stop looking out our differences and start looking at our similarities.

Today across America, we have the opportunity to excercise one of our most important rights. It's time to vote. Please choose your candidates wisely. From the local level to the federal government, we have a chance today to let the elected officals know how we feel.
