Great post and very humorous! Hacktivists changing a homepage isn't anymore dangerous than google bombing an organization so that a search for them gives certain suggestions or comes up with certain links making a point.

I'm not sure what hacking a website has to do with hacking into an organizations electronic files and emails. That would take much more resources and skill, whereas hacking a website was probably through an exploit, unprotected config files, lousy username and password combos or the like. All easily accessible via a browser.

Would you care to detail what hacktivism doesn't involve... hacking as we've seen here?

Oh, and if you could give us your stance on AGW that would be fantabulous thanks.

Thats the problem, defacing the site itself isn't bad. Its what they come up with after the "suposed damage"

Kevin Mitnick "reportedly" damaged for hundred of millions of dollars of equipment, yet the companies making the claims never proved it nor they reported the losses to their stock holders... YET the guy was still charged as if he did.... nor did they have sufficient proofs against him watch freedom downtime...w t

Gary McKinnon "reportedly" made 800 000$ of damage to computers by login to account which had NO PASSWORD... and remote desktoping his ass around... anyone can explain to me how can this account to 800000$???

Johnatan James apparently he stole a software that control humitity and temperature inside the shuttle they said was worth 1.7million... OHHH and he forced them to have to shutdown their computers which also cost them 41 000$ just to shut them down.... DAMN they must have engineers pay 2000$ per mouse clicks or something...

My point is whenever you attack a governmental site or anything that is closely related to them they will come up with crazy ass damage charges make it look like a national security threat blow things 25 times out of proportion and by the time the dust settle down no one even remember there was a message... the only thing thats remembered is OHH WE HAVE TO WORRY THERE'S HACKERS EVERYWHERE and none of them have jobs or girlfriends they do speeds and never sleep all they do is want to get inside my computer and to learn which porn site I was on last night....

All the guy did was deface the site, watch the media report gigantic loss and damage and #.... now ask yourself what will be remembered tomorow... the 100 000$ lost or the guy's message???

Now don't talk about something you don't know and say is ineffective the attacks I've describe there can take an entire town down to its knees if wanted and force everyone in the transmition range to view the page you want and there's NOTHING they can do about it...

Look, I realise you are passionate about coding. That is clear by your posts about "script kiddies" and other 'lesser' hacking techniques. But you don't have to talk down on others like they are stupid. I'm no professional programmer, although I am just learning to code simple programs using MATLAB, and soon, C. However your alternatives were easy enough to grasp, regardless of technical knowledge on the subject.

As long as they are transmiting open/wep and we can send the modified payload with the right timing you WILL NEVER get to see google.com or yahoo or whatever you type it will ALWAYS be the page the attacker set... this can be done at once to an entire city... YET you have NOT defaced anyone's webpage.

So you frown upon hacking a page, yet are happy to attack everyones computers in a city to promote a message? Sure it it would probably take a lot more skill than hacking a page (hence why I labelled them work intensive), but for me it's the message that counts.

I am into hacking, phreaking, electronic, AM Radio I've read everything ever issued from TAP to Phrack to 2600's I can be found on #2500 chatting with Goldstein the guy that made Freedom Downtime and I've spoke to Mitnick a couple time, Marc Abene and a couple a bunch of others... I'm working on a Van Eck's phreaking prototype for a project right now I know my # man

I better not annoy you too much then

Hey man, I'm not doubting your skills one bit, the name drops weren't really necessary. Just clearing that up, I never questioned your technical ability.

Website defacing is FROWNED UPON in the hacker culture for many reason... ITS STUPID, wayyy to easy to do... attracts nothing but negative view from the people that are clueless about the truth upon the whole hacker subculture...

I think you're missing the point. Sure it may be easy, but if the message is worthy, I say go for it. Do you disagree with what these guys are saying, or just the way they did it? Because the methods you suggest, although skillful, seem far more intrusive and menacing. You would certainly start attracting a lot of negative attention if you start attacking peoples internet capabilities directly. This is why I don't get why you are complaining about the site defacing in the OP.

Download "Freedom Downtime" and watch yourself how government are piss scared of hackers and how they fight back.... Mitnick did jail and they had NOTHING on him... watch it I dare you... then ask yourself if they did that to 1 guy how fast they will bite on something that gives them the potential to raise fear in the masses and get them to agree to have a more "secure internet"
I must admit, I had never heard of "Freedom Downtime", so thanks for the heads up. But I don't see how incarcerating one guy without evidence has anything to do with getting masses to "agree to have a more secure internet"? If anything would get people demanding more security, it would be due to the methods that you have proposed as a more skillful form of hacking than site defacing.

The internet is the LAST thing YOU have to share info quietly and keep in touch... When they regulate it and you can't post anything without being logged and flagged as a potential terrorist what are YOU going to do???

Well if you're reading this, the internet is still working.

I realise the internet is not the place to "share info quietly", and I don't have a facebook or networking site to "keep in touch", so I will do just fine thanks,
although what I would do is irrelevent to this thread. If the internet is going to get shut down, or heavily regulated it would happen regardless of events such as that in the OP.

So from me, it's still a
to those responsible for this.

Hahaha your cool man i kinda like you actually, in a good way LOL, nah sorry I didn't mean to come off across as abrasive man. I just tend to get a bit "passionate" when it comes to this LOL yet if you cross me on the street you'd never even think I'm a computer freek lol... and no you can piss me off as much as you'd want I wouldn't do nothing more than argue cuz its against my ethics lol...

I just think and it is my personal opinion that the negatives about website defacing out weight by far the positives in cases where it governemental/private property because they always blow it out of proportion.

And yes I thought taking a whole city down was more effective because they can attach a damage price tag on it... nothing gets damage you just down route to the page you've typed... you can leave it on for 1 hour and all town will talk about it yet no damage as been done and there's no way they can say "this cause us xxxxxxxxx$"

but thats just IMHO

And yeah learn C its a bitch but very portable and powerful.

Cheers man

I have a better idea of where you were coming from now.
And whew, that's a relief. The last thing I would want to do on ATS is aggrevate an unethical programmer.

Yeah I'm looking forward to learning C, although I had already heard it could be a bitch. I also got warned about the possibility of having to search through lines and lines of code, for that mysterious missing ";"

I think that in this case, a lot of people will remember the message. If it was just some kid writing "y0u g0t pwn3d", it would definitely be foolish, and looked upon negatively by everyone. I don't think any government is going to blow this one out of proportion though, as it would just draw much more attention to the many valid points raised on the defaced page. So if more people stop to think about the useless solutions to AGW, berore promoting them as necessary for our survival, then this 'stunt' was worth it.

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Perhaps in the past but not anymore, as and example look at below's code error reported by the compiler it'll tell you exactly where the problem comes from.

Codes

#include

main()
[
printf("Holla Dude!!!\n")
]

Compiler reported error

r4t@thor:~# gcc dude.c -o dude
dude.c: In function 'main':
dude.c:6: error: expected ';' before ']' token

Error on line 6 there should have been a ; before the closing bracked ] on line 7.

Compiller will not compile until the code is fine however this doesn't take in consideration certain errors of pointers, variable values or such that might compile but can cause your prog to go berserker on your ass and if ever you see "segmentation fault" its very easy to fix just jump off a bridge it'll make it easier on you... I almost did once while coding a prog that needed linux sockets to automate and generate a report and get it sent via SMTP.

So everyone should stand down because Joe Blow will think that the internet needs government protection? I suppose that would be valid, except that ISP's are already lobbying to become the gatekeepers of any part of the internet and QoS. What do you think will happen next?
The problem is that it is already in motion and Joe Blow already thinks that their kids need to be protected by the government from online predators and the like without actually being an involved parent. Keep Joe's news, porn, and youtube around and to hell with the rest.

Lastly, remember the "Free Mitnik" campaign that took off? Sure it didn't really get him freed, but it certainly made people question who he was and why he needed to be freed and thus his legend was born.
