wow you americans are so obsessed with guns you cant leave your house without one? thats paranoia, i wont succum to it. Why would you need a gun anyway unless you plan on using it? Vigilante eh?

[edit on 2-3-2010 by SuperSlovak]

Hmm logically the times you leave your house is when you would most likely have to defend yourself. I am not saying that is always the case, but that's the way it would most often appear.

Your home is a safe zone where you tend to let your guard down. Its when I am out amongst the rest of humanity the possibility of me being mugged or assaulted skyrockets.

A gun is carried to prevent violence and scare off potential predators...not to seek out trouble or to pursue vigilante justice in the event that they attack you it becomes and simple equation of survival, you or them.

I will not go quietly into that good night...I hope you all feel the same.

The only animal without the sense to defend itself is the sheep.

It's just my opinion I haven't come on here to cause a stir, i just dont see how being in possesion of a firearm is in any way going to advantage the owner. I've seen alot of youths who get ahold of them just to look "cool" and for street cred but then later on life end up turning it on civilians. I live in the U.K and have spent time in many rough areas and have rarely heard of guns being used in self defence, every time it crops up in the news it's about some poor guy losing his life because some neaneanderthal has got his hands on a weapon and is more than likely to weak to fight with his fists, but i know it's alot different in the states and i will research this.

benefits to owning a gun:
1. being able to kill an animal to feed myself if i cannot buy food from the store for some particular reason.
2. self defence

the reason you dont hear about guns being used for self defense is because you live in england. If you outlaw hand guns, then ONLY the criminals have them. They are not the ones that DEFEND, they are the ones that OFFEND.

A gun is a good deterrent for crime.

You also said that no citizen should have a firearm, only the government should have access to them. Well, that sure gives them a LOT of power...

Alright, it has not been brought up yet in this thread yet so I am going to bring it up.

I can make a gun. It is not that hard. Centuries ago people without larger manufacturing facilities were able to produce things.

Those that think that passing laws is going to prevent crime or people that defy laws, explain to me terrorists?

My God, common sense!

If I wanted to, I could build a cannon with the size of almost any caliber you wanted.

It is not that difficult. Because people think that writing something on a piece of DAMN paper, is going to keep them safe, I am beginning to think the idiocy of humanity is infectious.

I have no problem with gun ownership it is a right. I do think there should be sensible gun control left up to localities. The idea of automatic weapons and open carry in metropolitan areas is just too much for me.

I wonder if our UK friends here know that in states like Virginia and Texas it's even legal to shoot and kill someone trying to break into your home, and no charges can be filed?

I've heard of the families in places like New York trying to sue homeowners who killed their relative while he/she was trying to break into the home. I'm not sure how those particular cases turn out, but in states with "castle laws" such a case would be thrown out pretty quick.

How come the phrases "sensible" or "common sense" always preface what turns out to be even more freedom restricting laws?

If someone says something is sensible, its guaranteed sensible is the last thing it is.

You know ever since Obama was elected, the conservatives had been waiting for any mention or relation guns for them to jump around and cry that their 'freedoms' are in danger. I'd like the source as to where Cass Sunstein made tha statement over people and their freedom of arms. Wheres the source?

Obama has not made any mention of taking your guns away and he has not proposed or pushed forward any regulations to restrict gun ownership. The day he was elected folks came on here whining he was going to do so and it didnt happen. But yes, thanks to your 'unbiased' sources there, a year on this myth is still flying high.

I should also through out there that I'm not a partisan person by any means. I thought George Bush and his entire administration were crooks of the lowliest caliber as well. They ALL are. Or else they wouldn't be hand-picked for these positions in the first place.

Why do some people insist on keeping their heads in the sand(or up somewhere else) when there are legitimate concerns for the INFRINGEMENT of our second amendment?

...A fun owner calling non gun owners ...COWARDS..now that is funny. Gun owners I find are the biggest cowards out there...they simply cannot see any other way to defend themselves unless they have that cold hard phallic symbol in thier hand. Without guns...they act like they would be completely useless in an emergency situation. Take away a gun from these people you take awy thier bravado and become the cowards they so wish not to look like. Where do you think these criminals get thier guns bright guy...from countries where gun ownership is legal....aka USA...etc. Gun runners steal guns from these countries and then sell them to criminals. So yeah let's get more guns out there so that the criminals will never run out.

Also gun owners logic...where they say a criminal is less likely to do anything to you if you own a gun...but a criminal is more likely to kill you if he thinks you may be armed. It is just a question of who pulls the trigger first...the person who knows when a crime is gonna be committed(the criminal) or the person unaware when a crime is in progress(the victim)...who has the better chance...hmmmm
.

Rant on and on when you think your precious guns are in danger. Also where in the constitution does it say for people to stockpile weapons and why would people? I mean if your in gun fight with the military...chances of you being dead after the first few shoots are pretty damn good...so now you have a dozen guns or so with hundreds of rounds of ammo just sitting there.

www.pbs.org...

Oh yeah here is an ATF agent talking about how criminals get thier guns...these method can only be used where guns are widely available.

Well it looks like Cass is a very big anchor for Obama.

I have to admit that besides the Treaty being pushed and the crap Hillary brought up about Mexico, no major move has been made by the admin.

Now I have a B in law that gets notices on EVERYTHING our gov tries to implement on the restrictions of the 2nd amendment. He has only told me about 4 instances of alarms so far.

Now, Bush on the other hand and Clinton while in office, they tried numerous attempts.

The thing is peeps, your states DAMN well need to keep instituting their 10th amendment rights!

Montana and SEVERAL other states have told the Fed to kiss my ass on the Fed's attempts.

The states have awoken!

SG, how you doin?

While I am firmly behind the 2nd Amendment, and believe everyone has a right to own a gun, I can't help but wonder what the founders would think today.

See, in their time they wanted the populace armed in case they themselves in government became corrupt. And it was a pretty even match of firepower.

But now there's no contest, and that mode of thinking is no longer functional. The military in this country has a hell of a lot more than guns and if they wanted to they could kill anyone without so much as showing their face.

What would the Founders say...?

Adding propaganda from the butchers of Waco is just what I needed to change my mind.

Myself and many of my friends have owned firearms and I have never heard of their weapons being stolen. Not saying it does not happen, but I will wager that many of the guns in Mexico come from other places in the world, not the U.S.

Edit to add: I am pretty good with my body and machete as well for defending myself.

Well for starters, I do not believe many in our military would turn against us.
I also do not think that the TRAITORS who would could possibly take on MILLIONS of pissed American gun owners once the firing started.

Exactly, it would help that OP source his claims. There are a tonne of people coming through this forum claiming all sorts of things that other people said with no sources and time again I've found out no such proof.

Thankyou for providing a source, but that doesnt excuse the fact there was no link in the OP. If your going to make such claims on what somebody said you have the courtesy to source it. In in addition to this fact here

And by the way Sunstein's job is not to restrict guns, infact weapons have little to do with his job:
www.politifact.com...

He has as much power as a citizen does over the gun laws in this nation, but ofcourse there needs to be alarm in the blogosphere.

Why do some people insist on keeping their heads in the sand

Why do people like you continue to scream the sky is falling when time and time again it doesnt happen? You continue to insist your guns are going to be stripped again but as of yet no such action has been taken. Infact gun laws are being more relaxed now that they were under Bush, so why continue to be an alarmist? Is it because it smears the president? Anything to smear the man? Is objective criticism, focus on his administrations actual policies not enough?

when there are legitimate concerns for the INFRINGEMENT of our second amendment?

The only infringement of freedom here are those of the views of Sunstiens ironically. The man holds a view and all of sudden the all heck breaks lose. Its his view, his right to opinion, and if it 'offends' you its not anybodies problem. Its as if nobody can be critical of guns without some alarmist outrage?? For all the cries of the race card among conservatives how many times is the gun card being played?

And by the way government 'czars', the nice new name conservatives have concocted among many, (appointed officials) have existed well before the Obama administration. Reagan, Bush Snr, Clinton, they all had their own Czars. But yes, obviously you never made that exception right?

Your serious, aren't you?

Using common sense, in itself, reduces risk for crime. Yes.

But let's say you use common sense, avoid all the "gang infested" streets, make it home, and lo and behold, "the infested" are in your living room, spending qt with your family. What then? Offer him a drink/dinner?

The right to defend yourself IMO, is a basic NATURAL right. we, unlike all other animals, don't have talons, fangs or natural poisons. How human defense is done(within reason) is open for debate.

You dont take a pen to a test, spit into the wind, pull on supermans cape, nor do you take a knife to a gunfight.

Damn it SG, I am going to pull my Redneck card!

Like I said, there are numerous organizations that keep track of this crap.

I just am weary of the treaties that the guns in the US are going to other countries. If they are, they are coming from OUR government, not the private companies.

Those LIES have to be stopped.
