This is not good.

But I am not understanding why we would not know about it- is there a reason that China would keep a natural disaster on that scale a secret, forgive me if I sound dumb- but politics, I can see- but an earthquake?

like the post above you said , it has not been confirmed this was an EQ. Something making the scales read MAG 8.6 that isn't an EQ is pretty scary to think about. This could be a good reason the Chinese haven't come out to say anything yet. Time will tell

If this quake really happened, it seems to have occured only 2 minutes after the 6.1 Philippine quake.

mb vs M measuring units? Anyone care to explain? I'm at work don't have the time to google. I'm pretty sure an 8.6 earthquake is something hard to hide, even if it is China but that would be [SNIP] insane, 8.6 is like end of the world type stuff.

im begining to become really skeptical, for one main reason, the only info on this "quake" can be found on forums, and blogs, and one siesmic website, that may or may not be credible, just saying

If it is true, it will take quite a bit of time for any commercialised media to grab ahold.

so you are saying it would have to be on MSM to be believable ?

and as far as I know the two links I have provided have no reason to be false.

Such a large earthquake would be felt significantly by every seismometer around the world, but on the ones I'm monitoring I don't see anything abnormal.

I think it's an error.

Maybe someone on a hike accidentally kicked the equipment.

I think that maybe its an error theres nothing anywhere else. If some earthquake was of that magnatude then surely a tsunami would follow?

I don't think that China would withhold information about a quake of this magnitude if their was one.

I remember a few years ago there was a pretty big earthquake in China and it was reported. Why would this one be any different?

It says it was off the coast, so maybe some scuba diver hit it with their flipper

I agree with this -
We normally see all sorts of activity around the world -
at the time of something large - I'm not sure if depth/placement would have anything to do with what we do and do not see on other seismometers.
I find it interesting that it is on a couple of sites -
I'm thinking they get their info from each other?

Not necessarily. For a tsunami to occur, the conditions have to be just right. Like, the quake has to have happened at the same time a manatee was rolling around in the Gulf of Mexico, while a wave was moving in the ocean, at the exact same instant Hans was chewing on a piece of schnitzel, just right.

Wha? Sichuan province borders Tibet. It's nowhere near a coastline.

Oops... so I shouldn't have given Hans that schnitzel.

Good to know.

I'm leaning towards it probaly being a mistake, to early to call. Also remember the 3 Gorges(spelling) Dam which is a huge Dam is located close. I don't know if it would hold up to a 8.6 quake.
