But I am not understanding why we would not know about it- is there a reason that China would keep a natural disaster on that scale a secret, forgive me if I sound dumb- but politics, I can see- but an earthquake?

im begining to become really skeptical, for one main reason, the only info on this "quake" can be found on forums, and blogs, and one siesmic website, that may or may not be credible, just saying

Maybe someone on a hike accidentally kicked the equipment.

Such a large earthquake would be felt significantly by every seismometer around the world, but on the ones I'm monitoring I don't see anything abnormal.
I think it's an error.
If some earthquake was of that magnatude then surely a tsunami would follow?

It says it was off the coast, so maybe some scuba diver hit it with their flipper

Not necessarily. For a tsunami to occur, the conditions have to be just right. Like, the quake has to have happened at the same time a manatee was rolling around in the Gulf of Mexico, while a wave was moving in the ocean, at the exact same instant Hans was chewing on a piece of schnitzel, just right.
