The kind of weird thing is why do all these terrorists go for targets that will not even dent anything. If you watch all the movies, terrorists supposedly go for key targets, and not just light powder on planes...

What is going on hey? If these substances were banned, how did he get them onboard?

[edit on 26-12-2009 by Aoxoa]

But the principle of hiraba is that any little thing counts in Allah's eyes. So this man completed a mission that will get him 72 virgins in heaven. He accomplished disrupting air traffic and causing destruction to an aircraft. Not to mention inconveniencing many non-muslims on their Holy Day.

AQ masterminds do not control these wannabes. AQ has bigger plans that will unfold in 2010.

We cannot stop people who want to blow up stuff, they will find a way. What has to be stopped is the ideology to pull off such acts and that's probably impossible until WMD are used... which will be soon.

if this had been under the bush administration, the plot would've gone off perfectly. maybe next time, obama.

That's right. Sorry for being such a jerk to you.

Even if my mean joke were true, you understand. That is what counts.

Thanks.

Since they didn't want to start any panic by announcing the name of the Ft. Hood shooter and then vehemently denied any terrorist connection, I am suspicious of this blatant and nearly instantaneous announcement of terroist connection. I am not sure of the meaning, but setting us up for more loss of freedom is high on my list of possibilibits. If intelligent terrorists really wanted wanted to start a panic, they should read Tom Clancy's "Teeth of the Tiger" and take notes.

This guy was on a watch list.
"The suspect was on a U.S. government watch list of people with suspected terrorist ties. He was being questioned Friday evening."
www.cbsnews.com...

And the person that subdued him was two seats away. But there's nothing that can be done but watch until these people actually attempt to do something. That's the way American law works. And the enemy finds these loopholes too. It's quite possible that a dry run is used to identify marshalls.

I am amazed that some of you can't figure out why this is a big story. After the failed shoe bombing attempt by Richard Reid it was discovered that there was a second attempt planned but the operative got cold feet and aborted the plan.

Given the time of year and the sheer amount of air travel, there is deep concern that this was not the only attack planned. I can tell you for certain that this is the case. Not because there is evidence of further planned attacks but rather out of caution because Christmas season attacks is something that has long worries Law Enforcement.

So, what is the latest?

An attempted terrorist attack or just some fool with firecrackers having a joke which backfired (excuse the pun)...

According to reports this guy had links to terrorist groups and was being watched but how did he get on the plane then?

I dunno what to believe about this incident....

Are you serious? Sodium must be contained in oil to prevent it from igniting upon contact with normal air moisture. Skin contact will cause it to sputter and spark.

Were your scenario the case, all he needed to do was pull a vial of sodium metal and oil and dump the sodium into the water. The oil on the surface of the metal holds only for a few seconds, then crack, fizzle, pop, BURN.

A great way to get third degree sodium burns, and scare the hell out of everybody on the plane. Not so effective for blowing it up. If he had five to ten pounds of it and dumped it into a bucket filled with water, who knows?

Sodium would trip the metal detectors right out the door. It is still a metal, just highly reactive to moisture and butter soft. No terrorist worth their salt (pun intended) would use sodium when a little C4 would do the trick.

Not to mention that sodium in it's reactive state is metallic in color and not powdery. It has the properties of reactive metal.

Whatever that substance is, it could not be sodium. It won't react to fire and explode, it will burn before you even get to pull out your lighter and it is one hell of a sparkler show.

Look it up.

In police circles, the Nigerian Connection smugglers are often called "swallowers" because their main way of hiding the drug is to swallow it. Drug bosses wrap little balls of heroin in condoms and feed 80 to 100 of them to each courier, often washed down with a thick green okra soup. Arrested couriers have told of pre-flight training sessions in which recruits were given oversized grapes to swallow. Those who gagged were rejected.

New York Times

This is a guy who ended up evacuating his baloons in flight "Popping" them and trying to burn his heroin stash on board the plane.

It all fits, his dazed state of mind, the popping sound passengers heard and the fact that heroin can be burned.

This is all propaganda to give the media and cyber terrorists their favorite holiday present, fear and war.

LINTHICUM, Md. - Federal authorities say a man who arrived at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport had swallowed 100 packets of heroin in an attempt to smuggle in more than 2 pounds of the drug.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Frank Aidoo, a Dutch citizen born in Ghana, was arrested Friday after arriving on a flight from London around 6 p.m. Court documents show he has been charged with importing heroin.

Officials say U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers had intelligence that Aidoo had traveled to a New York address used by Nigerian heroin smugglers caught at other airports.

During questioning, officials say Aidoo told the officers he had ingested the heroin and he was taken to a hospital.

Somehow, I doubt terrorists will be gathered around listening to Osama narrating a Tom Clancy novel.

No way is this linked to Ft. Hood - that seemed to be well planned and executed. The individual was well armed, with enough ammunition to create a situation.

And it is near impossible to link the two incidents.

Here's another example of a dry run
bluecrabboulevard.com...
"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – An Iraqi national wearing wires and concealing a magnet inside his rectum triggered a security scare at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday but officials said he posed no apparent threat.

The man, identified by law enforcement officials as Fadhel al-Maliki, 35, set off an alarm during passenger screening at the airport early on Tuesday morning."

A few months later a terrorist was busted in Saudi with a device up his azz too. I think he managed to kill a few people.
news.asiaone.com...
"terrorist who attempted to kill Saudi Arabian prince Mohamed Bin Nafey"

So the design of strapping explosives to the inside of the mans leg is indeed right out of the manual of how to smuggle and detonate...

Oh darling child. Osama is dead and yes Western literature is studied and used by terrorist cells.
Yes, the Ft Hood shooter held the same ideology as this Nigerian muslim. Understand hiraba and it explains it clearly. Very easy to link these two incidents as well as the 14000 other acts of Isalmic terrorism since 911.

Naivatte is cute like little avatars but hardly helpful in the fight against terrorism. You can be for them or against them, your choice.

Bingo. It was expected that an incident would take place on Christmas day. It is also expected that incidents will increase in 2010. Just a matter of time.
Funny that so many people are just laughing this off.

The sources told CNN that the suspect flew into Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on a KLM flight from Lagos, Nigeria, and is not believed to be on any "no fly" list, although his name does appear in a U.S. database of people with suspect connections. He did not undergo secondary security screening in Amsterdam, an administration official said.

CNN

All the classic signs of a Nigerian heroin smuggler so far.

"Everybody got a little bit startled," he said. "After a few seconds or so ... there was ... kind of a flamish light and there was fire" and people around the immediate area began to panic.

CNN

Having had to prematurely evacuate his stash he begins to attempt to burn it.

When he noticed that Abdulmutallab was not moving, he grew suspect. He jumped over the passenger next to him and lunged over Abdulmutallab's seat.

Schuringa said he saw that Abdulmutallab had his pants open and he was holding a burning object between his legs.

"I pulled the object from him and tried to extinguish the fire with my hands and threw it away," Schuringa said.

He said he managed to pull an object tucked between Abdulmutallab's legs.

"Water! Water," Schuringa screamed. He heard fire extinguishers as he pulled Abdulmutallab out of his seat and dragged him to the front of the plane.

Schuringa said Abdulmutallab seemed dazed. "He was staring into nothing."

CNN

Classic signs of heroin intoxication.

This has drug smuggler written all over it!

Class A Drugs Class A Drugs
Re-inactment of a heroin user burning heroin on a spoon. Heroin is a narcotic drug which is also used for medical purposes as a strong painkiller. Heroin is a white brownish powder that can be smoked, sniffed or dissolved in water and injected. It produces sensations of warmth, calmness and drowsiness. Long-term use induces the need for greater amounts of the drug in order to have the same effect. Sudden withdrawal of the drug produces symptoms such as shivering, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, sleeplessness and restlessness. Infections are commonly spread by sharing needles.

Not that easy to get C4 past security these days.
Definate pattern to this incident, as there was in Ft Hood. That's probably what's important to first responders.

Really, you think it's because we are in Nigeria? Wait, maybe Yemen? I guess it doesn't matter what Muslim country you are in if it pisses all of them off to the point they want to just blow people up, behead them, kill children or random shootings at non-muslims.

I guess Michigan can now be considered a muslin nation since the population of muslims is huge there. Maybe we should get out of Michigan too!

It's not that we are in muslim countries, it's because they are twisted by their religion of pieces.

Point is, what the civilised world considers terrorism, differs greatly from psychopathic war hungry Americans.

For an anti-American your English is really good.
I guess you don't realize that the American government is... you.
That's like some weird Michael Jackson song... look in the mirror and really see what the truth is and where your fear lies.

Anti-Americanism usually shows lack of coherant worldview. Many anti-Americans haven't travelled out of the country, are young, have mommy issues, and lack respect for other humans. There is also an element of paranoia because they think someone is watching and controlling their freedom. Interesting illness.

Oh! For a second there I misread what you were saying and completely agree that a lot of Americans act in exactly that fashion.

Whoops!

This trend is not located in one country, but in modern, first world countries across the board. This threat (it is a threat, but purposefully used to incite fear) is causing even people on this thread to start pointing the finger at everybody else. Anti-somebodyelse's countryism shows that lack of world view.

Your perspective is great, but we are all on the Titanic, and she not only hit that iceberg, the captain and his cronies blew on his whistle and summoned the Kraken to finish us off. How do you sail a ship when a giant octopod is choking on your mast after engorging your crew? Don't Panic, then hope to god the thing doesn't notice you swimming in the opposite direction.

Even if you freeze to death in icy waters, better than freezing to death while you slowly digest. If it even lets you live long enough to do that.

I am referencing our societies at large and our giant shipwreck death situation could have been prevented if the captain and crew (political leaders) didn't release the beast and steer us to icy waters in the first place. This is everybody's problem, and pointing the finger at anti-Americanism is worthless, because a majority of Americans suffer from the same misconceptions they use to justify their actions and behaviors.

All One.

Some information that might be pertinent to this thread.

From flywithfish on twitter:

The amount of blatantly incorrect information on #travel security & facts surrounding #Delta Flight #NW253 is really staggering.

#NW253 Myth No. 1 - The flight is a @DeltaAirLines flight operated by #NorthwestAirlines (#NWA). This flight was not a @KLM flight.

#NW253 Myth No 2 - Security in Lagos & Amsterdam is handled by 3rd party agencies, NOT the #airline, just like in the US. #travel

#NW253 Myth No 3 - The passenger started his journey in Lagos, the flight NW253 its self started in Amsterdam. #travel

#NW253 Myth No 4 - The passenger with the 'fire cracker' had the proper boarding pass & documentation to board the flight #travel

Yeah but the people driving the boat of partygoers aren't dumb. We are in a defensive position until WMD are used. Iran will give us the opportunity soon in 2010, right on schedule.

The general American public is... stupid. Since they can't comprehend that actions of Islam they automatically place them in a lower position or as a victim of something that makes them act unethically. When in fact terrorists aren't acting inferior in anyway in their minds, they are educated and well trained for their missions.

This plane incident was probably planned to make more of the American public feel a false sense of security and false sense of superiority. That gives the enemy the psychological advantage. Very smart terrorists.
