Man Attempts to Set Off Explosives on Plane

abcnews.go.com

Federal officials and police are interviewing a Nigerian man, who allegedly tried to "explode" a powdery substance aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.

The man was apparently already on the government's no-fly list of suspected terrorists, according to a senior intelligence official.

"The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen...."

Those who would suggest that the war against terrorism is a waste need only to pay attention to these continued efforts to kill and maim innocents in the name of Islam.

It is as yet unclear how dangerous these explosives might have been, but it is just another reminder that the war against the US continues.

We can never let down our guard as history has shown.

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

Yes no doubt. This one man who wasn't even smart enough to get some explosives right, and who managed to get on a flight to the US REGARDLESS of restrictions that are already in place, are perfect reminders of how necessary removing our civil rights to fight these guys are.

Genius is all I can say.

The war on terror is an absolute waste. In fact, if not for our presence in the middle east, there is a solid chance this incident would have never occurred.

Instead of senselessly occupying foreign lands, how about we bring our troops home, secure our own borders, and, *gasp* perhaps actually enforce our own no-fly lists for a change?

You are absolutely correct, to curb terrorism we must remain eternally vigilant. Too bad we are so focused on the middle east that we don't even notice when terrorists actually attempt to enter our country.

Great, more restrictions, more controls, more abuse, more paranoia will follow.

Now they'll check us for some nondescript "powdery substance". Imagine the ambiguity.

And how come everytime I fly terrorists are the absolute LAST thing on my mind? I worry more about the airline losing my luggage than about my seat neighbour carrying explosives in a bottle of perfume.

I heard it was firecracker rather than an explosive device, although I suppose firecrackers can be considered explosive.

I wonder how he got them on board anyway, fireceackers arent supposed to be allowed on aircraft

The degree of your personal concern is not related to the actual danger you face in any situation.

I would be willing to guess that, except for a few security types, few of those who died on 9/11 got up that morning worrying about terrorists.

I can also say without reservation that those soldiers who were killed and wounded at Ft. Hood did not feel threatened as they waited their turn at that processing center.

That doesn't change the fact that the terrorists we're allowed to fly all the way off course into a building, while they diverted from course, they should have been either escorted or shot the # down.

No, we are definately being brainwashed. The USA will try to invade a number of other countries before the end of 2010.

Matrydom, is that not the reason why they all attack?

It just shows they would rather show thier cowardnise an Kill a few hundred innocent people. Than attack those in power. All for that cause. Some people have a very senile and stupid ideiology.

Our local news reported it was firecrackers the man set off on board the plane. What an idiot.

And lighting firecrackers would be a terrorist attack, of course.

Yeah probably a higher chance of getting on a plane with a terrorist than getting killed by lightning.

Odds of being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1

Odds of being killed by lightning: 2,320,000 to 1

Odds of drowning in a bathtub: 685,000 to 1

Chance of dying in a terrorist attack while visiting a foreign country: 1 in 650,000

Better get rid of your bathtub also ask the government for help to rid of it because its just as dangerous.

In the least bit of disrespect you are a example of why we keep losing our rights everyday in America to fear mongering bullsh** put out by the government.

I should keep listing things to just prove a point.

Odds of being murdered: 18,000 to 1

Odds of fatally slipping in bath or shower: 2,232 to 1

Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585

Chance of dying from any kind of fall: 1 in 20,666

Chance of dying from accidental drowning: 1 in 79,065

Chance of dying from exposure to smoke, fire, and flames: 1 in 81,524

Chance of dying in an explosion: 1 in 107,787

Am I the only one who smells false flagging? I mean...........how can they find out so much information, authenticate it then, pass it on to the Press, so quickly? I'm not buying this at all. After all, no one can even get on a flight without super invasive x-ray scanning now. You can't even take on a lighter so how is this possible? But forget that question. My question is how do they know this info so fast? Very reminiscent of 9-11 and its 19 alleged hijackers that they 'knew' about before noon that day.

Nope.............not buying this at all.

We were getting too complacent. So the 'man' needs to instill fear in us once more and ramp up that color-coded terrorist chart again. Happy holidays. Nothing but Fa La La La lies........................!

What is the point of listing the odds of various events? Especially when the only relevant event, the terrorist event, did actually happen today?

I mean, I just don't see the point?

And yes, igniting fireworks on a commercial airliner *is* a terrorist act.

Those who would suggest that the war against terrorism is a waste need only to pay attention to these continued efforts to kill and maim innocents in the name of Islam.

At least Richard Reid had a real bomb in his shoe.

I'm still trying to visualize a terrorist shouting god is great in Arabic while lighting firecrackers.
