IMO there is no way todays 'artists' are playing any part in 'waking' anyone up. First of all, they buy the lyrics most of the time. So the lyrics are not those of the singer/band, but belong to the minds of the writers. Today's music is geared toward the video crowd, and requires a visual story to back up the music/words. How it is percieved is basically through the video, not the music itself.

If you only listen to the words and not watch a matching video you might think you are understanding something they are singing about, but, most likely they are only singing something that someone else wrote. No passion in that. Music today is so manufactured, it has really suffered due to the commercialism of the entire music industry. It isn't about the music anymore. It is about selling tickets and videos for your ipod.

He%& yeah Gamma ray!! One of the best power metal bands ever, Kai Hansen is the man! Many of the songs are about aliens, nwo and illuminati.

Infact Gamma ray is one of the (unfortunately) very few bands whose albums i have actually bought from record store instead of downloading torrents. Just to support perhaps the best German band ever.

Here is one from Helloween, the year was 1987 (Hansen still onboard Helloween..) . I think this one is about nuclear weapons...

[Insania 20 14]

We'we thrown away our former gods
Controlling our day
We have created better ones
So we control the way

We are the ones with the power
To hold down the enemy
Our gods are perfection
And they are protecting our lives
We still need some more of them
To be safe from the other side
As long as we're stronger
Nothing will happen to us

Fireflash in the night
Just an evil dream
Holy war in the sky... never

[Insania 20 16]

Error in store 103
We watch the sun at night
The pretty gods we're built ourselves
Now terminate our lives
Silicone brain powered voices
Are crying "attack" tonight
Our gods are now fighting
In anger, burning our world
Doomsday has come
And there is no place to hide away
The future is over
And there is no turning back
Fireflash in the night
Now reality
Holy war in the sky.....
[chorus]
Twilight of the gods
Insania's dead and gone
Another world was born
But the twilight soon will come
[Solo]
[Mike / Harmony both / Kai]
Fireflash in the night
Now reality
Holy war in the sky.....
[Chorus]

"Music today is so manufactured, it has really suffered due to the commercialism of the entire music industry."

Correct! Today's music is overproduced sanitized rubbish without any emotion, feeling or message to it. Today's artists have little or nothing to say; that's why only the kiddies who do not know any better are listening to their crap. If you want real political music, you have to go back to the '80s. There is a reason why radio and the rest of the media stayed away from politically charged '80s music. The music had power and was influential, whereas today's music is limp and lame.

And speaking of the garbage on the radio, here is one more by Queen:

Check out Lord of the new Church - a tune from the early 80's
I was lucky to see them in concert in Munich 1984 -

Open your eyes:

Video games train the kids for war.
Army chic in high-fashion stores.
Law and order's done their job.
Prisons filled while the rich still rob.
Assassination politics. Violence rules within' our nation's midst.
Well ignorance is their power tool.
You'll only know what they want you to know. The television cannot lie. Controlling media with smokescreen eyes.
Nuclear politicians picture show.
The acting's lousy but the blind don't know

....Open your eyes see the lies right in front of ya. Open your eyes.....

They scare us all with threats of war. So we forget just how bad things are.
You taste the fear when you're all alone. They gonna git'cha when you're on your own.
The silence of conspiracy.
Slaughtered on the altar of apathy.
You gotta wake up from your sleep. 'Cause meek inherits earth...six feet deep.
Open your eyes see the lies right in front of ya.

Open your eyes.....

Enjoy

Heres another one i like, keep em coming guys i have been downloading all these songs hehe

Just a thought, to add suspense
To warn against, our discontent
Fear is real, but not so taught
You let others, be the cause.

(CHORUS)
There we go racing towards the sun
Ignoring all the noise, striving for the grace of man
People play this great charade
And always miss the point, never fall for prophecies.

You say it was near, that it will be clear
You act so convinced, a fortress you've built
Remember the doubt, by which I now stand
You write the book, on the way it all ends.

Tear down those mighty walls, re-invent the way you talk
Look ahead, now down below
Or high above, where angels flow.

CHORUS

Waiting to see, our kind disagree
You draw the line, and stick to your pride
Remember the doubt, by which I now stand
You write the book, on the way.... It ends.

You say it was near, that it will be clear
You act so convinced, a fortress you've built
Remember the doubt, by which I now stand
You wrote the book on the way it all ends.

It ends.

The paranoia is in bloom, the PR
The transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs
Keep us all dumbed down and hope that
We will never see the truth around

Another promise, another scene, another
A package not to keep us trapped in greed
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take it's toll if you could
Flick the switch and open your third eye, you'd see that
We should never be afraid to die

Rise up and take the power back, it's time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Kataklysm Illuminati lyrics
the time has come to rage insanity
mortals beg to decive
illuminiati strive to control
the seeds of generations
no more opposition, no more free will
we shall suffer from this higher power
for ages we've been manipulated
all our existence in vein
solitude inside the intelligence
of man is forever
inside your mind we shall conquer all...
this time!
illuminati... knowledge from the sons of sin
illuminati... the world turns and hell burns
hell burns... hell burns... hell burns...
we feel like empty souls lost in the dust
with our shadows embracing the surface

Rage Against The Machine - Wake Up

Lyrics

Come on!
Uggh!

Come on, although ya try to discredit
Ya still never read it
The needle, I'll thread it
Radically poetic
Standin' with the fury that they had in '66
And like E-Double I'm mad
Still knee-deep in the system's #
Hoover, he was a body remover
I'll give ya a dose
But it can never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Movements come and movements go
Leaders speak, movements cease
When their heads are flown
'Cause all these punks
Got bullets in their heads
Departments of police, the judges, the feds
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
You know they went after King
When he spoke out on Vietnam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Yeah!
Yeah, back in this...
Wit' poetry, my mind I flex
Flip like Wilson, vocals never lackin' dat finesse
Whadda I got to, whadda I got to do to wake ya up
To shake ya up, to break the structure up
'Cause blood still flows in the gutter
I'm like takin' photos
Mad boy kicks open the shutter
Set the groove
Then stick and move like I was Cassius
Rep the stutter step
Then bomb a left upon the fascists
Yea, the several federal men
Who pulled schemes on the dream
And put it to an end
Ya better beware
Of retribution with mind war
20/20 visions and murals with metaphors
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
Ya know they murdered X
And tried to blame it on Islam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Uggh!
What was the price on his head?
What was the price on his head!

I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard, I think I heard a shot

'He may be a real contender for this position should he
abandon his supposed obediance to white liberal doctrine
of non-violence...and embrace black nationalism'
'Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
pinpoint potential trouble-makers... and neutralize them.
Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
pinpoint potential trouble-makers... and neutralize them
and neutralize them, and neutralize them, and neutralize them'

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!

How long? Not long, cause what you reap is what you sow

Depeche Mode - Black Celebration

The Cure - Killing An Arab

The Psychedelic Furs - President Gas

U2 - When You Look At The World

Reflex - Politics of Dancing (12" Version)

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done

The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again

Tears For Fears - The Working Hour

Simple Minds - Belfast Child

George Michael - Freedom '90

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

All these songs (except for The Killers) are 20-30 years old, however, the lyrics still apply today more than ever. No surprise there considering it's the same trash which is still running the planet.

I think you are tarring a lot of people with a rather large brush here. If you look through many of the songs posted in this thread, a lot of the Rap ones I know about, and many of them write all their own lyrics, and are on independent labels, or like Immortal Technique, sold a lot of their music themselves. A lot of those guys specifically avoid being signed to major labels, as they will not compromise on their message.

From what I've seen in the thread so far, I think major label cash hungry cynical ploys have been the minority. I think even some of the major label artists who've appeared in this thread have a good message, they just have to couch it in a bit more metaphor or make it a bit more general to get past their corporate sponsors. A lot of those guys would probably make the argument that by getting into the mainstream, they can reach many more people.

I think your point about the commercialism of the industry and selling for ipods and so on is fair in the context of Top 10, Britney etc, but most of the acts in this thread are either old bands from times when political messages where more accepted in the mainstream culture, or they are from underground subcultures like punk/metal/political rap, where they are never going to be mainstream, and are much more often trying to make an actual message.

311 - Its Allright. A great song about remaining in the present.

Stay with me.
Here with me.
Right in this instance.
Not in the distance.
Head is off in it good time.
That's when things get out of line.
Taking in this moment.
You time is so well spent.

It's alright
Wherever you are right now.
It's alright
That's where you're suppose to be now.

Stay with me.
Here with me.
Right in this instance.
Not in the distance.

Standing at a crossroad
I was at a loss
Those temporary moments
Pleasures that are stolen.
Here in the present
You're time is so well spend.

A song one song could end a war
A song one song could end a war

It's alright
Wherever you are right now.
It's alright
That's where you're suppose to be now.
