At the time, I was a flight attendant and was based at Ontario National Airport in Ontario, California. The place I rented was about a mile
from the airport.
I am not trying to discount your testimony, or your eyewitness experience. However, some things seem inconsistent, since I am quite familiar with the
Ontario (CA) Airport.
Here is the diagram, for those not familiar:
Note that there are just the two parallel Runways, oriented East/West.
One day, I was outside and noticed one of the planes from my airline coming in to land and was just standing there watching it when I noticed a
dark object flying beside of the plane.
This, I very much wish I could have seen!!
The plane was only at about 1000 feet and descending.
On a normal approach, and I assume to the West, since that is, due to prevailing winds, the predominant landing and take-off direction, an airplane at
1000 feet above the ground (AGL) will be about 3 miles from the end of the Runway. Your rented apartment was, you said, "about a mile" from the
I stood there trying to figure out what it was.... but then the plane banked to the west...
I was following your story, until you wrote that. Since I was born and raised in the LA area, I well know that familiarity with surrounding mountains
helps to orient us, as to West and North....therefore, East and South as well. As I've pointed out, unless you saw an airplane on a left base
(heading North) prior to turning West onto Final Approach....I cannot understand why you'd say you saw the airplane, with the livery of the company
you worked for, 'ban to the west'.
...and the object kept going south.
So, both the passenger airplane, and the object were going South? That would be unusual, because that would mean that as you saw the passenger
airplane 'bank to the west', it would have been a right bank, and you know how closely nestled up to the hills the Ontario, CA, airport is.
However, having written that, I looked at published arrivals (STARS) for KONT. The ZIGGY FOUR comes from the NorthEast (say, from Las Vegas, for
OK. Now that we've covered all of that ground, I still find the rest of your story compelling> (again, not discounting, just putting it to some
It was just a sphere-like, dark object... maybe just a little more oblong than a sphere. It moved at the same speed as the plane the whole time
it was visible to me. This happened in broad daylight and I wondered if the passengers on the plane saw it... actually I wondered how they COULDN'T
Welll...IF it was trailing slightly, behind the airplane, then likely no one would see it.
Thanks for the eyewitness report. Again, I am slightly jealous. I just wanted to analyze, and hopefully understand, a little bit, what you saw!
