When does a group belief become a cult and why?

In the Gnostic group we were told not to accept anything taught there but to know it ourselves through direct experience. Now is that a cult? Maybe, I dont know and dont really care, it served me.

This alone is not an advise characteristic for cult.
But watch out for small print

I don't think your friends (the one's you left, gnostics) were weak. They could have been much worse, that's what I meant.

I would just like to thank you personally headlightone, ATS should be proud they have a member like you; this has to be one of my fav threads of all time. The main reason being, I have seen and experienced what cults can do to people “I’m sure Mr Green will fill you in on who I am, as I cant u2u yet” Keep up the good work pal, now I all this can be put in the past.

There is a search button at the top of the forum, also not sure if you noticed but you can also click on a members profile. So if you really wanted to know who Paul_Richards is or who TSOL is simply do a search.

I also would recommend just forgetting Paul_Richards and TSOL was ever mentioned, many members on here have been through a pretty rough and confusing time and I’m sure people just want to forget about it. If you must though do a search, there is no need to post about the matter once you do find out, some want to forget about the past as already mentioned.

I don't usually like to get into the middle of an ugly fight (though I have jumped into a dog-fight once, and got bit by both parties for thanks...), because if you are not one of the principles, it can confuse the lines, and I'm no footsoldier.

Well nags the ATS community is a real community and as such their will be streets in that community that will have problems and feuds.
If a belief doctrine [virus]is drip fed into that street it could cause illness.
If that withdrawal from the virus is prevented by foul means the resistance could turn ugly.
Since 2004 a similar situation may have or have not evolved which you inadvertantly stumbled upon.who knows??
The feuds never end they just change direction.
Cult behaviour has been used by fictional authors down the years.
J K Rowling in her famous Harry Potter books had the cult scenario.
The Dark Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters blindly following him.
Dumbledort The Order Of The Phoenix battling them.
The bystanders caught in the middle.
