Bush defends free market amid 'awful' US jobless figures

www.timesonline.co.uk

According to an advanced copy of his remarks, he appeared to be keen that this weekend's financial summit does not adopt too interventionist an approach to the banking meltdown. “The crisis was not a failure of the free market system and the answer is not to try to reinvent that system,” Mr Bush will say. "Government intervention is not a cure-all."

500,000 Jobs lost in a week how does this clown do it. So Goverment intervention is not a cure all for hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs but it is when banks want trillions out of the tax payer. When is this Buffoon going to go, I hope it really is next January, the damage he has done to the US both at home and abroad simply cannot be calculated.

I'm suprised that he is even talking about the problem or maybe he does not even see it as a problem as very soon he will be sitting on a big pile of money somewhere very safe thats for sure.

Sound's like Bush is back on the magic powder . . . no real surprise, nor should it be when nobody really listens to him.

I can see it at the Economic summit this month . . .

[GWB] - Hi y'all

[Gordon Brown] - What the Queen's name are you doing here . . . I thought we were gettin that Obama fellow . . .

[Silvio Berlusconi] - Quel roba bianco sotto il vostro naso. Ottenga a partire da me.

[GWB] - why thanks, pardner . . . I feel specialfied.

He's adrift . . . worse than a lame duck finishing out his glory days . . . he's rather disliked by about three quarters of the population and at this point . . . and every time he opens his mouth, he makes things worse.

ya....free markets always con the citizens of trillions of dollars to buy off the banks and financial institutions....got ya....

what he's really trying to say is that they've finally got this system so tweaked that they are reaping a very bountiful harvest.....please, please, foreigners, we'll be done with the harvest soon, then you can do whatever you want to change the system....
but, not now...the riches...the riches!!
god, I would love to see this guy get picked up at the airport on his way to paragua or whereever and arrested on the spot!

Would you prefer a market dictated by the government?

Communist or Capitalist it doesn't matter, humans are going to compete and an elite will rise out of that. It happened in the Soviet Union and China. Party officials become the New Elite.

The thing with a free market system is that it gives the little people a higher chance at success. It punishes bad business. It does not reward irresponsibility. It also helps keep taxes and unemployment lower.

Our problem right now is that the Free Market system is not kicking in. We are not letting Economic Darwinism do its work. Sure in the short term it would very painful, but in the long run our country would benefit. Rather than bailing anyone out that $700 billion plus should of been set aside to help people when the system corrects itself through corporate failure. The $700 plus billion would of been used to make sure people are not homeless, can eat, and survive while the system is corrected. We will get to see the "fun" effects in the near future of our short sightedness and interfering with the system.

Without the free market, taxes will jump to 50% and unemployment to 10%. These will be typical figures at any given moment. Countries become welfare states. This is how Western Europe operates. Economic growth is restrained by massive bureaucracy.

Or how about China where the state has become essentially a giant corporation with the Communist party leaders like a board of directors. Sure their economy is growing but they don't have any concern for the environment, health, safety, or civil rights. Vast parts of China make Dicken's London look like paradise.

Personally I prefer here.

When I lived in Germany for two years, it was nice living there as a US citizen. I would not want to be a German citizen though. Sure the country is pretty and crime for the most part is low, it would be here too if our police operated like the Polizei. As a military policeman in German we worked along side the Polizei quite often. The concept of police brutality does not exist. A good way to find that out is to not submit to alcohol breath test. They pull vehicles over all the time searching the vehicle and inspecting it with no justification for the search. One of the things I remember best, is if a fight broke out at a club, the soldiers wanted us to get there first. If we didnt the Polizei would indiscriminately beat everyone and often use dogs.

As an American we enjoy more freedoms than we imagine, but our system also instills personal responsibility. Some people might call it an economic and social darwinism, but overall we are much better off that way. It gives someone who came from nothing to be great. With freedom comes great opportunity. Our free markets are part of that. Sure there is going to be greed and corruption, but that is not the markets fault. That is human nature. Even in communist and socialist systems greed, ambition, corruption, and competition are prevalent.

I think one of our greatest challenges as a species is accepting ourselves. Rather than understanding and knowing ourselves as a species, our faults, and our instincts, we try to fix things with "Isms" and various systems. The problems isn't the ideologies or the systems. Its the illogical and irrational instincts of humanity. If we learn to embrace ourselves as a species, accept who we are as a whole it would really help us progress. When we recognize our faults and limitations, stop blaming isms and each other, then and only then can we truly make a better world.

Last I heard, Pelosi was wanting to bail out the auto makers. Seems like the Dems in Congress just can't wait to pass out the taxpayers money.

when a government intervenes with the free market it often causes more harm than good. raising minimum wage causes job shortages cause not as many can be hired. price floors causes surpluses because not as many people are keen on purchasing. the market eventually works itself out. the MPC (marginal propensity to consume) is so low right now that people are barely spending, which is hurting businesses. when the government straight up gives people money, they arent spending it like planned so it doesn't stimulate the economy. even though it doesn't sound as great to an individual, the government needs to spend their money straight up. however, rather than give it to banks i believe a depression-era system should be adopted to pay people for community jobs so more cash flow is being offered, along with jobs, and making improvements to the community at the same time. either way, government intervention is not good unless they spend the money by purchasing from business, stimulating the economy. it goes through a multiplier that in the end will boost the gdp.

Worst President ever (so far), worst VP so far, worst administration so far, worst lies (almost) so far, worst neglect of human (and all life really) so far, worst enonomic policy so far, worse war management since Vietnam, most ignorant President of all time: INVESTIGATE BUSH FAMILY. Ties to MOST of the bad that has happened in history from economy to oil issues, to wars. It is disgusting. EVERY time I think, "Oh, maybe he has regrets, won't make it worse" he manages to do worse. A WEALTH of evidence points to Cheney running 9/11. INSIDE JOB. They needed an "excuse."

"Foot in the door" manipulation tactics, hidden agenda(s), lies, and disregard for human life. THEY want war, to ruin our economy. LET THEM keep what they stole; strip their citizenship (Bush, his dad, Rove, Cheney etc) then send them to Afghanistan or Iraq and put them on the front lines. The "draft" laws were changed to allow for them, just as they broke Constitution, Bill of Rights, abused power, broke Geneva Conventions etc. If they want to CREATE that world, and think they are so smart, give them what they want. Send them over there as normal "US Citizens" and see how they get by. They have no issue sending troops to die, families lose fathers and mothers, kids have to grow up with that loss, people lose limbs, HORRIBLE crimes committed and all I see is a group of people "Above the Law" like something out of that Steven Segal movie. Laughing, smiling, no pitty, no remorse, because they are LOYAL to their causes. NWO or not, they are loyal ONLY to the rich, ONLY to the ELITE. Put pollution with the poor, take our money, lie, cheat. In time, and I am calling this, in time, NO army can protect them. They are probably planning all of our deaths then some retreat to Hawaii or another country in case people revolt. THEY MUST pay for their crimes. JUSTICE must be shown to the world, otherwise, the US is just like they say "Nazis" were, and just as those who took others on as slaves.

--SAME THINGS happen, just they have others do it for them, and they get away with it--THEN LAUGH.

Free Market isn't a bad idea only when it is implemented right. We really don't have a free market when the government is intervening in it so much. Practically the idea makes sense that fee market would be the best. It's the FED's fault for inflating money and causing the turmoil we are in now.

Why make Afghanistan and Iraq suffer even more. I say we let Chavez deal with him since he's going to be in his back yard.

But the real monster is Cheney.

Lets not forget the 'others' involved in this mess also. and let's not vote Republican ever again.

Bush say's lot's of stupid thing's. When is everyone going to realise the man is not the full ticket? He is the world's village idiot, suffice to say a very wealthy one. This is why he got to the White house. Money talks!

Of course the crisis wasn't a failure of the free market system. We no longer live/operate in a free market system. Today's is a system of no-bid contracts, massive subsidization, and bailouts; so this may be one of his few fleeting moments of honesty.

The right came in 8years ago and told all the "godless" libs to shut up and stand along will rightie takes the driver seat. Gee, where are we now?

Same thing with his dad in 91', only it wasnt as bad. 81' I constantly heard the chatter of praise about this new fella, reagan, the man may be a legend to a large part of the populous but he started this mess with this reaganomics BS, look at where this debt came in. Heck carter messed up aswell, his the only democratic president Id be including in the list of bullsh*tters who made harder working folk suffer more.

Call it partisan or whatever, life experience has showed me that when it comes to economy, the right always somehow gets it wrong. Nevermind the family value BS, atleast the dems aint half as bad.

Im seeing too many suffer around me, I think ill hold my money on this dem and I damn well hope he atleast stabilizes the economy because if he doesnt, then consider me a permanent third part voter.

To be honest, none of us has seen a free Market.

A free Market would be one which had no regulations whatsoever.. which would mean I would be able to start selling food without an inspection of my kitchen.

Did you realize that if you want to sell food you have to have a second kitchen? How the heck is mom &pop supposed to easily start a business that way? I mean I understand the purposes of it, and yes the kitchen should be inspected.. but a seperate kitchen? That just raises the amount of money required for anyone to start a food business.

Anyway, thats just one example.

Free market my behind.... I'm all for one...but we have never, and will never see one.

So what is he defending again? American Corporatism? Adam Smith would flip in his grave if he saw what we have deformed captialism into.
