Obama Campaign Threatens Legal Action Over NRA Ads

Fairfax, VA-Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has sent threatening letters to news agencies in Pennsylvania and Ohio to stop airing ads exposing his anti-gun record sponsored by the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF). The kicker? NRA-PVF's Ohio’s ads have not yet begun running. “Barack Obama and his campaign are terrified of the truth,” declared Chris W. Cox, Chairman of NRA-PVF. “Sen. Obama's statements and support for restricting access to firearms, raising taxes on guns and ammunition and voting against the use of firearms for self-defense in the home are a matter of public record. NRA-PVF will make sure that everyone knows of Obama's abysmal record on guns and hunting.” The Obama campaign sent cease and desist letters to news outlets in Pennsylvania and Ohio, denouncing the ads and demanding their removal from the airwaves. All stations where NRA-PVF has purchased or plans to purchase ads have been provided with documented evidence of Sen. Obama's anti-gun record.

NRA doesn't seem to like Mr. Obama all that much. They seem to believe he's going to infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights. Who's telling the truth here...here is the link....

I'm in Ohio and this slaps the face of the Ohio legislature. They recently passed a Castle Law, where if you shoot someone in your home and kill them you do not have to defend your actions to the police. They have to assume you were defending your property. The police have said they feel drug dealers will lure their competition to their home and shoot them to get them out of the way.

Either way, in Ohio this is going to be hard to swallow if Obama tries to or does this.

His campaign is potentially putting itself in a no-win situation by doing this. If they sue the NRA to stop them from airing the ads, it will simply confirm to many people that Obama is every bit as anti-gun as the NRA claims. It will probably have a bigger negative impact than the ads ever could.

This type of action will not bode well for the Obama campagin.It is terribly hard to run from ones voting record.When people are faced with the "facts" about his record on gun control all hell will break loose.

He's gotten away with it so far. As long as the media keeps letting him off the hook, its going to take him actually enforcing a ban of some type before people will realize how anti-gun he is. I expect that ban is coming sometime in the latter half of next year.

This should be brought up in the media. Yet, it has mostly been ignored. McCain needs to bring this up about his voting record on gun control. As far as i know he hasn't brought it up at all. The economy is definitely a HUGE issue obviously, but this also deserves it's due attention.

Anyone who owns a gun and believes in their right to do so should be worried. Some of the bills he voted for are extreme.

They make this BS nice talk about how they plan to maintain the "spirit" of the 2nd amendment while ignoring the 9th.

Before one of the O-bots runs in here and tries to put a nice face on it, Obama has already voted in favor of very extreme anti gun laws, it's clear he would support an all out gun ban. Pelozi is one of the worst and Biden has already said he'd support a full ban on guns. If these people gain control of the BATFE they won't need to pass extreme legislation, they'll enforce the unwritten procedures and vague rules of the BATFE to their worst possible interpretation.

Don't screw with my God given rights, democrats. Your rights, including free speech and more will be next. When you lose all your rights you'll start wishing you hadn't supported the guns being taken away.

Oh, and thanks to the NRA for waiting until the last minute to "kind of" do something. These ads should have been running in every key state for the past month.

I don't think it can get any worse than Obama and Biden in terms of putting the 2nd amendment in danger. They both have a history showing what their intentions are, and the saying goes a leopards spots don't change.

As a gun owner, I must say I feel highly violated by the fact they want to remove my rights. I like a majority of others, am a responsible gun owner. I've taken classes, I follow the laws and the numbers show legal gun owners aren't the ones going around killing people.

There is nothing but air and opportunity between them and the NRA. Why threaten, just do it.

Surprised Obama hasn't tried to set up a meeting to sit down and talk with the NRA before threatening them.

McCain really should jump on this. He needs to shut up about terrorist threats for 5 minutes and address another fear that resonates with a whole lot of people; being stripped of our gun rights.

And I am sure Obama would do everything he can to ban legal firearms. He is concerned about the segment of society with the highest percentage of firearm deaths -- underclass criminal "youths" that seek out illegal (i.e. steal) firearms and then kill other underclass criminal "youths".

It comes down to who is more important? Honest citizens that want to protect their homes and property? Or the lives of degenerate thugs that can't stop shooting eachother?

I do believe Obama will choose to protect the thugs.

I agree. Enough with the terrorist talk. Everyone knows everything there is to be known about it...he needs to move on. I don't like what Ayers did...but it's out there and the public knows about it...he needs to go after him on gun rights. Why he hasn't done it yet is beyond me. I think he could change some votes for his benefit with this. There are people out there that are leaning Obama...but aren't yet sure about how they feel about him or his policies.

Respect 2nd Amendment, but local gun bans ok

A: Because I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country. I think it's important for us to recognize that we've got a tradition of handgun ownership and gun ownership generally. And a lot of law-abiding citizens use it for hunting, for sportsmanship, and for protecting their families. We also have a violence on the streets that is the result of illegal handgun usage. And so I think there is nothing wrong with a community saying we are going to take those illegal handguns off the streets. And cracking down on the various loopholes that exist in terms of background checks for children, the mentally ill. We can have reasonable, thoughtful gun control measure that I think respect the Second Amendment and people's traditions.

Yeah, he is playing word games. He may favor the ban of all handgun sales. He may favor the ban of ammunition for handguns. He may favor the ban of handgun ownership without a "special permit" or maybe the ban of all handguns that are not disabled with lead in their barrels. He may favor a ban of all handguns EXCEPT those used by police or the military.

But see "technically" he does not favor an "all out handgun ban". The words "all out" are key here. Just like when he said he does "not exchange ideas on a regular basis" with the terrorist Ayers.

And unfortunately, he'll fail miserably even at that. They'll still get their weapons the same way most of them always have, through stealing them or purchasing them from other, well-connected thugs and criminals who have a virtually inexhaustible supply of illegal weapons.

In the end, no one gets protected and innocent, law abiding citizens pay the price.

This is about a month old, and it really would have been good ammo, no pun for McCain before going to Pennsylvania 2 or 3 weeks ago also so he could further stretch the untruths to those who cannot think and sift facts for themselves.
It's a little late to revert to this or using it to persuade voters, besides, he is suffering from a campaign identity crisis on the verge of complete meltdown and nothing that he does either seems genuine or believable at this point, he continuously re-enforces his not so genuine plans by his desperate sounding speeches and rants on the stump.

Like it says, law abiding gun owners have nothing to fear, and I think that is basically the fact of the matter.

FactCheck.com has a conflict of interest as it's owned by one of Obama's close partners. -- I wouldn't even waste my time with that site.

In Nevada Obama is running ads on how he supports gun use which is the most I have seen directly in two-facedness.. because he spoke about those gun-toting people. Plus he voted against homeowner's rights in a robbery.

Wouldn't it be nice if a politician was straight up with us. He talks about change and yet.. hasn't told us what change he is talking about. So far, he's played all the typical political games politicians play.

sigh.

What i'd like to know is where are all the Obama supporters on this one? Is this the type of change they want? They will light up the Palin bashing threads but they haven't touched this one yet.

Ain't That the truth! As an example, my sister is mesmerized by barry which is fine for her I guess but like most b o peeps, the issues don't seem to matter and when I bring any up she calls it propaganda! I'm not being mean but just calling it like I see it. I have come to the conclusion that the barry supporters like what he stands for which to me, spits on our forefathers and our constitution. I Know our father would turn over in his grave if he knew as he fought in two wars; and for what? I don't think it was so we could be a third world socialist 'worker bee' nation.

I'm an avid gun owner. Always have been. I own a variety of weapons including AW's. I'm not adn Obama supporter but I'm certainly not a McCain supporter. As important as gun rights are, to excuse all of McCains shortfalls just because he appears to be gun-friendly is ludicrous. It's like Joe the Plumber and the general 'I'll vote for what's good for me personally not what may be good for the country as a whole'. The 2nd ammendment is important and we need to amke sure that NO ONE infringes that right. Whether it's Obama, Pelosi or the man in the moon. But it is certainly not in the country's best interst to pin an entire ellection on one aspect. I'm heartily against illegal guns. Round them up. Put automatic death penalties, life without parole, woodchipper feet-first on any violent crime committed with an illegal gun. Fine. But defending our 2nd ammendment rights is separate from the President or Congress. They have to be made aware --- without equivocation --- that we will NOT tolerate an infringement of the 2nd Ammendment.
