I read a National Geographic article that spoke of a 4000ft deep trench somewhere in Mexico. At the bottom of this trench are a few caves leading off
in different directions. The researchers found giganic caverns within the tunnels comparible to that of football stadiums. The local indians concider
the caves to be sacred and tried to sabotage the expeditions.
Another web site spoke of lenendary caves in South America of the lost city of Akakor. The story states that the ancient cities there were connected
by underground tunnel systems.
The Grand Canyon may have a similar tunnel system as Mexico and South America.
An Atlantis lengend connected with the ancient Americans describes this:
Thalok made a signal, the door unclosed, and a dwarf with a lamp in hand appeared, and conducted him through labyrinthian passages, till they emerged
in a subterranean palace, or temple, hewn from the solid bed of the mountain, which burst upon the vision like a dream of enchantment. The dome was
supported by giant pillars, left in place by the architects; while in the centre of the vault a revolving wheel, brilliant with phosphorescent light,
served the double purpose of ventilator and midnight sun to this unhallowed fane. The sides of the grand nave were tunnelled with arched openings,
leading to shadowy conservatories and chambers that invited repose.
