State Prisons Prepare for Integrated Housing

www.news10.net

ONE, CA - For as long as anyone can remember, California prison inmates have been paired with cellmates of the same race. But that's about to change.

Under a court-ordered settlement, corrections officials are desegregating prison housing. They're starting July 1 with Mule Creek State Prison in Ione and the Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown.

Well that is pretty much the worst idea I have heard in a long time.

I hope the state has a surplus budget for buying extra body bags because that is going to end up being a blood bath.

The racial divide alone is bad enough in prison, but more importantly this will mean that rival gang members and sworn blood enemies will be forced to live in an 8x10 cell together 23 hours a day.

Talk about your social experiments gone bad....hard to believe...yet just dumb enough to be true. Yay social equality.

It'll probably be bad at first. But after a while the prisons will get use to it, and this will make people feel more comfortable about going 2 prison. This will probably end most of violence in the prison system. Good Ideal, I must say.

I hope you're joking because if you're serious then.... whooooo-boy.

This is, without a doubt, one of the stupidest moves I have ever heard of for a prison system. About the only thing worse they could do is make all the Supermax prisons co-ed.

New Mexico owes it's ridiculous level of in prison gang violence largely to California. In the 70's New Mexico signed an inmate exchange deal with California, agreeing to take as many Cali fellons as room would allow in exchange for some money. They got MS13, Bloods, Cryps, and some fringe gang members as well as a handfull of Aryan Brotherhood skinheads. The first prison in New Mexico to participate was the Big House up by Santa Fe. The state threw all the prisoners into their cells, integrated, because they'd never had much problem in the state with integrating the prisoners before. A riot started and the end result was someone got a guard's keys and suddenly the entire facillity was one big slaughterhouse. Prisoners were raped, burned alive in cells by other inmates, used blow torches to access lockdown parts of the facillity to get at snitches housed there, and the snitches were disemboweled and dismembered. Many, many of New Mexico's felons housed there actually fled into the courtyard and begged the guards to get them to safety because they were totally unaccustomed to the violence and brutallity they were witnessing inside the prison.

Since then New Mexico's state pens have been essentially hells on Earth. Every few years small scale gang and race riots break out and the stories you hear from the guards are shuddering. This is a horrible move by California.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that, but I figured he had to be kidding

Take the opposite of common sense and reason...and there ya go.

I can totally understand where everyone is coming from but I have to say I really have no sympathy for some retarded gang banger who thinks that their whole "ride or die" attitude means something. I say go ahead and integrate them and let them off each other. They are waste of space and tax dollars anyway. If they were not killing each other in prison they would be doing it out on the street. I'd rather they do it behind bars where the chances of innocent children being killed in the crossfire is removed altogether. Of course I feel bad for the non violent inmates and it sure does suck for them cause they will get caught in the crossfire instead, but as far as the gang members killing each other.... good. Its about time our tax dollars did some good in prison. Now just throw a few child molesters into the mix and I will be a happy guy.

the gang problem is far far more evolved then prison.

It..as far as I can tell..seems to control a lot more then a dime bag!

the question is how much more pressure can the system take before it needs corporate intervention.

Then the circle is complete.

Wisconsin has been mixing everyone together for years. There have been a few problems, but nothing major has happened. With the volume of movement through the system, things generally iron themselves out.

I think this is the media stirring the pot again. This isn't a big deal.

Yeah that should go over well.

For some reason people CHOOSE to segregate themselves.

could be...one thing that i think that may help is the fact that if you unite all of these guys they will share info and maybe allegiance making the playing field a lot tighter

Yes they do choose to segregate themselves based on race, gang affiliation, nature of their crimes, and anything else that can make them different. Much like people in the real world. I don't see white collar Wallstreet Professionals hanging out with bottom basement crackheads on their off time. That is only natural and when it comes to various gangs...who cares!? Let these idiots kill each other off so I wont have to pay 30 bucks a day per inmate to house them until they can get released and commit more crimes in the name of their "set". That is what the mentality of a gang banger is. To be hard, to be tough, to do whatever they wish however the wish to do so. Life is full of choices and your choices have a consequence. Most gang members KNOW that they will end up in jail or dead due to gang violence and they do not care. Why should I? Let them live together in that little small cell and let them give each other Columbian neckties till the cows come home. These idiots look for ways to kill each other as it is, they want to kill each other. I say move them into one big house and make it a reality show and give them their chance to prove they are big tough guys and let them off each other. I for one will not miss them when I walk down the street and not have to live in fear of being mugged, shot, stabbed, robbed, car jacked, or caught in the crossfire of rival gang idiots pulling drivebys while I am sitting in my living room. Anyone who has ever had to live with REAL gang violence in their neighborhoods I would imagine feel much the same way I do. Let them kill each other so I can have the freedom to walk out my front door without fear, or to be able to sit in my yard with friends and family and have a BBQ without keeping an eye on every car that passes by.

I dont think you can compare the prison system in Wisconsin to California's in terms of active gangs and gang violence within the Prison System, I expect this to be a bloodbath and quite frankly, I think it is a good thing in this case for the exception of non violent criminals who will get caught up in it as well.

Couple replies to a couple of different thoughts that various folks have brought up...

1. To the dude that said he had no sympathy for the little gang banger retards, I agree 100%. The problem isn't them killing each other in prison. Honestly, I could give a crap how frequently that happens. The problem is when you get prisoners riled up it's the guards that generally get caught in the crossfire. My late uncle was a jailer for a New Mexico county sheriff. When you get two drunks that decide to duke it out it's often the jailer that ends up with the shiner. That's a couple drunks who aren't "hardened" criminals just guys that made a bad decision, threw back one too many, and got picked up urinating on the grandstand at the city park. Now imagine what happens when a few hard core street fighter vatos decide to mix it up with a few East L.A. brothers and the guard is responsible for breaking the mess up. You go from drunken wild swinging to homemade shanks brandished by guys who have rap sheets as long as your arm with plenty of suspected murder cases included.

2. You absolutely cannot compare any prison system in the United States with what happens in the California pens. Like I said, a few dozen of them got shipped into the more pr less peacefull NM system and suddenly it turned into Dante's Inferno. These are guys that have grown up in neighborhoods that were basically a hair's breadth away from being the US's version of Kosovo. They aren't corn fed wannabe hard asses from the "ghettos" of Madison, Wsiconsin or Fall City, Iowa. And in that Cali system everything I've ever read about it says that you're basically forced to make a choice when you get there. Are you gonna side with somebody in hopes of moving up the ladder or will you stand alone and be the entire prison's female for your whole sentence?

Whoever came up with this idea has got to be a deskjockey. Why would this make any sense if you have any knowlege of prison.

Very scary.

good grief they should just walk down the hall tossing grenades in each cell that's about what it amounts to

Any prison system is a combination of what the administration and the inmates make it. If people want to behave like animals and the administration allows it, that's the kind of climate you'll have to deal with.

California's DOC is reaping what it has sown.
