Plans for a levitating train from Las Vegas to Disneyland can move forward under a transportation bill signed by President Bush on Friday that frees up $45 million for the futuristic project.

This sounds so cool...

Not often does something right out of Sci-fi get real world consideration...

This looks so cool... using magnets IS the future of MASS TRANSIT...

Its clean, efficient, and wont make the libs mad... although... it might destroy the natural habitat of the dust bunnies....

So- WHO profits here? Hmm?

I say make the casinos pay for ALL of it. Plus the taxes and other maintenance fees. For a destination and wasteland such as Las Vegas, such a huge expense should be spent somewhere it's really needed. If the plan was to extend the line all the way to the east coast I'd say go for it, but this sounds WAY too marketable for my tastes.

I live in an area where almost every year for the past 7 or 8 a new Indian casino has opened up. Pretty soon they will be all that dots the hillsides around here as more corporates snag hapless Indians into extravagant casino deals ON THEIR LANDS all for a meager monthly check. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach thinking about how trashy the whole scenario is.

Makes me wonder what we will be able to accomplish once these new Levitation Effects are engineered...

Not only Japan but Germany China and more. I mean wtf what happened to America being the first for all this stuff. The innovators. I really do think that we are overrated. Sad to say but true. At least we are coming around though.

As stated in wikipedia, Germany only has a 20 mile long test track. Not sure what they have there in Chengdu, China.

Dont feel bad now guy... the US has been doing other things over the years... like space exploration...

If the US was to build these tracks from LA-LV, i belive it would become the longest 'levi-train' on the planet...

that's probably the most wasteful thing i have ever heard being built here in la . our mass transit system is a joke and here the want to build a transit system to las vegas . why so the dirtbags who frequent vegas have a faster way to get here and spread their filth . people are dying on the vine here and 45mil are going to be spent all so people can save 3hrs driving time . were becoming more of a joke everyday here in america and this just helps it right along .

A couple of years ago my son built a demo size of the maglev trains. It was a hoot! On on side of his board he had it all polluted trashy dirt and horrible looking and on the other rich green, trees, and plenty of clean air and water.
How he sees the technology is the only way to make a better future for himself and his kids one day.

It was a fun experiment, we bought a bunch of rectangular magnets from radio shack, placed those on a thick piece of cardboard train track style and covered with gray tape.

He then placed Plexiglas on the outside of the board to easy viewing.

He made with a piece of thick foam about 1/4 in. a "Train-car" on the under side more magnets with opposite polarity than on the track.

The only problem he encountered with not enough time for the science fair was propulsion. So for the experiment he simply gave a little push. But he figured the best way would be with the magnets themselves or even an air push.

It looked great and even though he lost to the guy who proved how many times on the average you can stretch a rubber band before it breaks, (important persons kid) he had a ball and it was the kids choice.

The Shanghai maglev runs from the airport to downtown(ish) - it's cheap, for one: I think I paid about 40 yuan or so to connect to downtown last time I flew in - that's about 5 bucks US, give or take a couple of cents. It's a really cool ride - quiet, smooth and Fast. 430kph.

If Im understanding you correctly I think your saying hey we are in space so dont feel bad. But I do still feel bad because our infrastructure blows. Our roads are aging, our bridges falling apart, mass transit is pathetic at best, and we are supposed to be the wealthiest nation on earth. It just goes to show you its a farce. The soviets had the same signs of a huge bankruptcy when all their money went into the space & military and not in infrastructure. I hope we do do this project and I hope we do it in several other cities and really focus on this stuff we need to make America great and not just our military. Im excited and hope this gets done.
