Hello all. I'm pretty new to the forum and thought I would bring up something I read today since I haven't seen anything about it here. Popular
Science had an article in the latest issue (May 2008) about the F-35B military fighter jet currently in test flights. Here's the interesting part:

The jet can soar at supersonic speeds (1,000 mph) and deflect radar signals, but by the end of the month, pilots are expected to show off its most
highly anticipated feature: the ability to stop mid-flight and touch down virtually anywhere.
The article says that they will be put into service by 2012. It can become airborne in less than 500 feet, as opposed to 3000 feet of runway needed by
conventional jet fighters. The lift fan pushes cold air down which causes the jet to float up.
I thought this was pretty interesting because I've never heard of a craft that can do this before.
