Alien in glass tube, real or hoax?

I have downloaded this image a few years ago [year 2000] and it still intrigued me very much.
On the image, you see the name of the excellent site www.coasttocoastam.com but I cannot find it there anymore.
I wander, is it a hoax or what?

I think this was part of one of those sideshows at a carnival or circus.

No, I find non-in English and I find that very strange.
Maybe the image-name is not correct?

The picture is also featured in the book 'Majic Eyes Only' by Ryan S. Wood. I'll see what the notes say about it when I get home from work.
