It has been the opinion of many Masons (Pike, Mackey, Waite, etc.) that the character of Hiram as used in Freemasonry is based on the older solar myths of Osiris, Mithras, Jesus, etc.
While the symbolism used in Freemasonry is Old Testament, the basic allegory is the same with Osiris and the other death-and-resurrection god-men.
