It's the nature of society to stare at, comment about, put down, anything or anyone that is different than the majority.

Think about if almost everyone in your town dressed like you, but a few people dressed like pimps. Would you be tempted to join the group in insulting or making stereotypical judgments about them?

As much as we all hate to admit it, there's a definite tendency to judge, that which we do not understand, in each of us. It takes a person who is not afraid of becoming an outcast himself, to stand up against those ignorant fools. It also requires a HUGE amount of confidence, at trait which is sorely lacking in most people, to disregard the influence of the masses.

Rather than feel anger or hatred for those who make you feel like an outsider, feel sorry for them. They are just victims of their own shallow nature, and cannot see the truth.

We are ALL different, or "weirdos" by someone's standards. So long as you are dressing for yourself, it doesn't matter what other people may think. All that matters is that YOU are comfortable with who you are.

I've had all sorts of abuse for dressing in black, having long hair and listening to metal, I find it pretty funny.
Usually I just ignore them and feel good about the fact that I'm getting all the attention that they themselves would Love to recieve, sometimes I tell them to # off (which can bring a big torrent of abuse to which I laugh at their faces).
Nobody's tried attacking me as yet, and most of the comments come at me when I'm like, at the other end of the street because townies are generally cowards, even when in big groups.
I just keep happy in the knowledge that I'm making something of myself whilst they're stuck being the slaves to society.

oddly enough, most Goths dress the way they do just for the reasons you hate... They WANT to be noticed, they WANT to be feared, and they WANT to be viewed as rebels. If you dislike this, sorry, it comes with the territory. A shop owner knows nothing about you, the real you....they know what they see. If they've often been ripped off by Goth punks, and you're dressed like them...of course they're going to make a snap judgement (as would you). We're only human, and those knee-jerk reactions are there for a reason...

When you see a nervous looking arab sitting on a plane next to you...are you going to think "gee, maybe he's nervous about his first day at school..." or are you going to think, "gee, I hope he isn't planning on flying us into a building...!!!" This is a two way street, and no matter how idealistic you THINK you are, it's more likely you are guilty of exactly what you are blaming the "norms" for...

Granted...but part of being in a society, is putting up with everyone else's crap, hehe....
There's pros and cons to everything...

For example, if I want to be treated well, (like going out to dinner, returning something, etc.), I get dressed up...because it really does change people's perceptions, and they honestly treat you better.... May not be right, but it's simply the way it is...

If you purposely try to look like a antisocial misfit, then folks are gonna treat you like one Einstein.

Sorry, if you say you were only ranting against his rant, than you must be right. I kinda saw it like you were simply attacking him personnaly. (not that I really care or that he can't defend himself, I just didn't saw it like a "rant against another rant")

Who am I to judge anyway...

I can understand people giving you the 'look' from time to time. Goth is a hardcore image in comparision to most other youth groups; Chavs, Trendies, Skaters, Moshers, whoever.

But what I don't understand are comments like this:

You state several misinformed opinions regarding Goths, all of which you state as facts ('They are into some freaky shtick'). If you never spend time, talk to or even stand in the same room as them, how can you possibly know that they are into anything freaky or be qualified to form any sort of opinion on them?

Half-minded, while you sit typing, are you wearing a burberry cap?

I'm not a goth so I might be wrong, but I thought the whole point was to show that you dont really care what people think, if you bothered by what people think of you why dress in all the black gear?

Dear me.

I get this all the time. When i go shopping I get people staring at me and asking me if im a 'mosher' or 'goth'

So what if i wear fishnets, underground boots, skirt and hoody, spikey choker etc... whats so bad about looking how i want to look?

I dont copy people, I just dress how I think I look best!

This thread cracks me up.

So, you're a goth, and you're offended that people look at you funny. You lump them all together in to one big category, and deem them "typical" people. Let me tell you something, ALL people are individuals. Every single one of them has as much right to their individuality as you. By lumping them together, and looking down your nose at them, you become no better than those you say judge you. Your reaction to "townies" and "chavs" is also equally as pathetic. Everybody is an individual, not just you.

Hmmm.... Well....

I have to admit that I don't know that much about a Goth's lifestyle. But I've been an
observer of people and lifestyles for many years. And I've concluded that we all have a
tendency to judge one's appearance and then compare them to our own. What one person
may think is unrealistic and/or unethical in todays society may well be tomorrows new mainstream
fashion trend which is sold off the rack at Macy's.

But unfortunately most are going to assume that if they see someone walking down the
street with their pants just barely clinging to their crotch that they're a 'gangsta', or if they
wear a turbin that they might be a terrorist, and on and on. Todays media and government
has leaned us to believe such things, if your not cleancut and well dressed then you must
be someone we have to keep an eye on. We also have to keep in mind that this country
of ours is for the most part is being swayed to keep under a judeo/christian viewpoint/lifestyle.
Anything that goes contrary to that way of thinking is considered to be the bad apple
that might spoil the whole barrel. Look at what they said about Rock and Roll back in the
"50's", they announced that it was the 'Devils' music and would lead us all into bowels
of hell itself.

Many times a lifestyle seems to be chosen as an act of rebellion to one's parents or at
least what their parents believe in, an act of defiance or antisocialism to what is considered
the norm. "Hey Look at me, I'm not in a suit/dress & F()*k You all if you don't like it!"
So I find it a bit strange when someone chooses a lifestyle that goes against the grain
of what is considered to be the 'norm' to then complain that people look at and treat them
differantly. Seems like a catch-22, were damned if we do, and damned if we don't.

The irony here is that if we evolve towards everyone adopting to a clothestrend such
as a "Goth-Look", tomorrows so-called misfits would be choosing a new differant
look. It's a never-ending cycle of looking and dressing differantly to the current trend.

Of course this is soley my 2 cents and sporadic musings of an outside observer. My personal
attempts in life are to try and not judge someone until I get to know them, then I will
figure out whether or not he/she is someone that I should not judge by the look of the
book's cover. With that said I found an interesting comic that deals with the subject-matter at hand:

How can you possibly finish by saying no offence? Every charachter in that post is a direct shot against the author and any other Goth. Ignorant stereotypes are exactly whats wrong with our society today.

We judge a person by the way they dress for what reason? Their clothing groups them into some stereotypical group which we want no link to?

I believe the author has clearly stated that his clothing is not an attempt to draw attention to himself. Assuming so is simply feeding another stereotype. We are willing to accept that people who dress differently are opening themselves up to a degree of scrutiny. Why? Collared shirt and blue jeans is permittable, but dark clothing deserves some form of gocking or finger pointing?

I find that hard to accept.

I do agree with Implosion's comments here, but I feel the condoscending tone is unnecessary. The thread cracks you up? His reaction is pathetic? You point the finger at infinite and say he looks down his nose as others, but your post is doing what exactly?

i know what it's like to get stared at cause of the way i dress. certian ppl see the saggin pants, the wavecap, and the white-t, and the nice flashy leather jacket and think..."
oh lord martha hide your purse!!!!!!!!" so yea i feel ya.

but i've gotten past all that..cause i look@it like if you think EVERY black male that sags and wears du-rags etc...is some lowlife thug who has issues with society then you have a few issues of you're own. ppl who fail to realize that ain't worthy of ne kind of respect.. and if you ain't worthy of respect, well, that's why you get treated the way you do by ppl who dress the way i do but actually ARE lowlife thugs (
