A U.S. convoy collided with several civilian vehicles on Monday, May 29. This sparked riots in Kabul which lasted hours. The accident killed 7 people, but the riots may have claimed up to 13 more lives. Rioters used sticks and stones to break windows and loot in the city. This has been the worst rioting in Kabul since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

A US military convoy collided with several civilian vehicles Monday in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing seven people and triggering hours of rioting that may have claimed at least 13 more lives, a government official said.

Multiple mobs of men armed with sticks and rocks roamed Kabul's streets, looting, smashing windows of businesses and hotels, burning street-side police posts and searching for foreigners in the worst rioting to hit the capital since the fall of the Islamist Taliban regime in November 2001.

Gunfire was heard across the city and clouds of smoke were seen in at least five areas of central Kabul, including from two police vehicles that rioters set alight at the 17th district station, the Pajhwok Afghan News agency reported.

Rioters ransacked the offices of aid agencies, a restaurant popular with Westerners, as well as a private television station, burning three company cars and destroying a guard booth. One Afghan civilian whose car was damaged in Monday's accident said passengers and others at the scene started to hurl stones at the 30-vehicle convoy of coalition troops and shouted, "Death to America."

Well, its quite apparent that there are still large groups of people in afganistan that DO NOT want us there. This must have been a pretty bad riot, 13 people dead, and its the largest since the downfall of the taliban rule. This is definately not going to be good for the people who want us to believe afganistan is progressing politically and democratically. This is a definate blow to the people supporting the war.
