Aerosmith
Motley Crue

1. Sabbath, they invented the genre
2. Mettalica, the first 4-5 albums that is.
3. Iron Maiden, third on this list, first on the ugliest band of all time list.
4. TurboNegro, Norweigan Death Punk, if you havent found them, find em. One of the funniest bands ever. Ass Cobra and Scandanavian Leather are my favorites.
5. Brujeria, evil mexican death metal band screaming about killing gringos.:bash::bash:

Comments?

How the hell anyone can claim Motley Crue is the best heavy metal band of all time is beyond me and I own several albums. For LA hair metal G'n'R come waaaay before Motley Crue and Poison come one place after them. Warrant and Winger we won't get into.

Hmm. This is a hard one.

A few years ago I would have said AC/DC, even 'though they're really just hard rock. In a few years I might go back to that opinion.

At the moment Rammstein top my "heavy" list.

They sound like a foundary in an auto factory with a performance of Wagner on the PA and I do understand their lyrics.

Wollt ihr das bett in flammen sehen?

Between that and you asking me questions that I refuse to answer...

God knows, I don't ever want to be an Angel.

Trent Reznor comes a close second to Rammstein. There's only one Marilyn Manson album that appeals to me.

When it comes to "punk" then Rage Against the Machine just edge out the Offspring. Offspring are just a little too clever with their lyrics!

Britain pretty much started heavy metal

Deep Purple (Pretty much started Speed metal)

Black Sabbath (Made metal dark)

Motor Head (Stated thrash metal)

Iron Maiden (Made metal even more darker and lively)

Metallica (Pretty much started a new genre and took metal to new levels)

Metal pretty much went down hill after the 80s with all the 'Nu Metal' and depressing 'goth metal' we have now.....

Maaan.. this is too hard. Im going to have to make the smallest list I possible can.

Machine Head
Killswitch Engage
Meshuggah
Iron Maiden
(EARLY) Metallica
Slayer
Fear Factory
Pantera
Arch Enemy
Annihilator
Gwar

Best nu-metal has to go to Korn. They invented the genre and stuck with it through all the **** they were getting from people. Much respect to them. Their earlier stuff is better in my opinion though.

All in all, some damn right heavy ****ing metal.

P.S
Stop saying Guns n' Roses! They ARE NOT metal! They are hard rock. There is a difference.

EDIT:

However, I will add that they did change the metal music scene for the better.

Anyway, here are a few of my fave bands the now.

James LaBrie
Type O Negative
Nightwish
Lacuna Coil
Metallica
Black Sabbath
Alice Cooper
Ramnstien
Disturbed

There was a song out on Scuzz (music channel) a couple of years ago that i really liked, cant remember the group but the video cracked me up. A mixture of cool make-up and an episode of Buffy the Vampyre Slayer.

The song was called Parasite God...anyone remember it?

anyway....off now to listen to some Type O Neg

1 : Anaethesia
2: Dream is dead
3: Wolf Moon with Zycanthropic

When you mentioned the make-up, I thought you were refferring to my friend's band, Torsohorse.

I think you are talking about the Norwegian artist, Motiis. I love his music, it's good to just chill out to. I have lots of respect for what he stands for. He wears a mask and big ears as a way to show that looks shouldn't be as important as they are in today's society. However, at one of his shows in Bradford (near Leeds), one of his ears fell off!
Poor guy.

EDIT:
Im also a big fan of Type O Negative. "Cinnamon Girl" always gets me singing along.

I must chime in because i think there is a factor in this question that is being greatly overlooked by many of you. Especially everyone sayin Sabbath or Metallica. That, friends, is consistency.

Yes I know you all think that Sabbath & Ozzy are the be all and end all, but can any of you name the 3 (I think) albums that Sabbath did with Dio? Or how about name 1 song they did with Tony Martin? Or did you even know that Tony Martin sang for Black Sabbath? So why should the "Greatest" metal band of all time be judged strictly on their first few albums while practically everything the band did after 78' (i think) be ignored? I will tell you why: Because ( with the exception of the Dio ones) all those albums Sucked! So my conclusion is that Black Sabbath could not POSSIBLY be the "greatest" metal band of all time because they haven't written good music since the late 70s/ early 80s.

Basically the same can be said about Metallica. Most people would agree that everything since the "Black Album" has been pretty awful. Certainly not material by the "Greatest" metal band of all time. Sure everyone loves "Master of Puppets" "Kill em All" & "Ride the Lightning" but how can you call them the "Greatest" when they have consistently put out "Un-Great" music for the past decade?

So with that said I will have to say:

#1. Iron Maiden
#2. Judas Priest
#3. Manowar

WTF?!? No one giving respect to ANTHRAX!!!!!!

Then MEGADETH, SLAYER, PANTERA, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, and finally MetallicA.

Sabbath and Zepp get honorable mentions, but they more of dinosaur metal bands.

G'N'F'n'R trumps Motley Crue IMO.

MOTORHEAD without a doubt.
They copped so much flak for doing heavy metal back in the days when bubblegum
pop was the mainstay of radio and the music charts.
Unfortunately, Motorhead still dont have the same respect that Sabbath do.
Even though they are from the same time. If you put on a Motorhead cd and then listen to a Sabbath cd, you can hear how heavy Motorhead is.
But I guess this isnt a poll about who is the heaviest but the best.
I also love METALLICA but as James Hetfield said once, if there had've been no MOTORHEAD , there wouldn't have been METALLICA.

So for me...

1. MOTORHEAD

2. METALLICA
3. SABBATH
