No truer words every spoken...

This morning, just before leaving for work, the first "potentially" dangerous activity occurred.

My daughter and I were just about to leave when I smelled something burning. I walk up the stairs and it gets stronger. I get to the landing at the top and it is extremely strong. We begin to look every where for a source. Can't find anything. We check to make sure all wall furnaces are completely turned off, everything okay there. (Wall furnace in upstairs bathroom was on pilot, but nothing amiss and the smell was not present strongly in the bathroom. In fact, upstairs, the only place it was strong was in the landing at the top of the stairs (the hallway that the bedrooms come off of) but not strong in any of the upstairs room.

My daughter and I are standing there kind of at a loss as to what to do. I mean, I can't just leave with my house potentially about to burst into flames. We're standing in the hall (upstairs) and I say to her "I don't know what to do." When I just happen to glance over at the upstairs central unit controls.

This messed up old house has two central units; one for each of the floors. The upstairs unit is in the attic. Back in the fall when we had our first cold-snap in October I attempted to turn on that furnace but soon learned that the switch inside the unit itself is not completing the circuit. So we have gone all year without that unit. When I learned that the switch was malfunctioning (you could hear it click up in the attic when you would turn the control to heater), I got afraid that it could start a fire, so I immediately told my daughter and my son that the upstairs unit had something wrong and not to ever turn it on.

Somewhere before the end of the year (not sure what month). I notice the control is turned to heat (its on). I turn it off (hear the switch doing its scary clicky stuff) and then I go gripe a mudhole in both my kid's butts and explain to them that they could have burned the house down around us. Of course, both kids denied turning it on and I figured at least one of them was full of $h|t. Anyway, I delivered the gospel according to mom and they most definitely were converted. (Remember my son is 20 and my daughter is 14, so they understand threats real well - as well as how stupid it would be to turn on a malfunctioning electric device.)

Anyway, back to this morning...I glance over at the controls and the upstairs unit is turned to heat!!! It's on! I turn it off (clickity). And I jump my daughter again, and she says, MOM! I understood the first time. I have never touched that control since we've lived here!

At this point, the smoke smell is still just as strong so I have to go in the attic to see if that unit is smoking. I get up there (happy) and the smoke smell is NOT in the attic. I check the unit out, but definitely, the smoke smell is almost non-existent in the attic. So I get the hell out of there as fast as I can.

So my daughter writes "DO NOT TOUCH" on a piece of paper. I scotch taped over the switch so that it's taped in the off position and then we taped the paper over the entire control box.

We stood around scratching our heads a bit longer and then I went out and woke up my son to come in and make sure the house didn't burn down. If, of course, states emphatically he did not touch the controls. Also, when I was talking to him about it, he stated that him and his girlfriend had been in the living room yesterday and all of a sudden the microwave beeped as if it was turning off...but they hadn't used the microwave. It kind of unnerved them.

Here are two pics I took this morning right after guarding the controls.

antipig! Thank you!

**ALMOST REAL TIME UPDATE**

This JUST happened. Just took pic and immediately downloaded it.

Woke up and came out of bedroom. Went downstairs, got my coffee came straight to computer room, set coffee down (this parts important), turned computer monitor on, went to get cigs out of bedroom - and that's when I step in an area of several wet spots bunched together right in front of my bedroom door in the hallway (upstairs).

took this pic

EDIT: Just took a closer shot at a different angle.

And 2 points to clarify - computer room as first room at top of stairs so I didn't come past that room with my coffee (not to this area). Second point - I don't think there is anyway I could have come out of my bedroom when I first woke up and NOT stepped in this. It seems it got there while I was downstairs.

Val, I don't think I commented on your thread yet, but after reading your posts from yesterday and today, I just had to. Your "visitor" is getting stronger. Scents are very commonly associated with spirits. Do you know if there was ever a fire in the house before? What did the burning smell, smell like? I mean was it like burnt food smell, burnt paper? you know what I mean.

are you interested in removing this "visitor" from your house or just willing to let "it' be? It may have sense a threat from your direction, hence the increase activity. I wouldn't be too concerned yet, but pay attention to all the signs, it could also be trying to warn you of something that has the potential of occuring.

Okay, the burnt smell was almost like an electrical smell...which is the scariest smell I can smell in this house because it's 100+ years old and all the wiring has NOT been updated...that's why I hesitated even leaving for work.

Your statement that it could be warning me of something that could occur has already crossed my mind. But the reason it has, is because I am perpetually scared that this place is going to catch fire from bad wiring and burned down...so it's already on my mind.

IF what's here doesn't ever hurt my family or me. IF it continues to only do kind of bizarre things ever once in a while...I'm absolutely okay with it staying. Springer has told it as much. But if it moves to meany type stuff...nope - it's out of here.

The occurence yesterday may NOT have been anything dangerous. It's kind of a 6 of one, and half dozen of another. Apparently the smell was NOT coming from the attic unit or the smell would have been in the attic. But why was the switch thrown to on? And if the smell was not generated by something actually burning (or getting real darned hot) why did it occur? so that I would see the switch? or maybe so that I would be confirmed in my fear the wiring could be a problem?

I guess we could speculate this all kinds of ways. But in the end, we really can't conclude anything based on fact.

Thank you for the analysis. It actually scared me more than if you had said "yeah, its a voice". I'm scared to death of the wiring in this house.

I am actually going to take action immediately on this. I will get some one over this weekend to start working on this. If I have to have temporary wiring ran until we get to the point of remodeling the inside of the house...so be it.

I'd like to add to you that your analysis makes perfect sense to me. Obviously there was a storm just prior to the "sound". There is no way to tell what time separation between the thunder being recorded and the "sound", so it could have been a matter of just a few seconds. Lightning very well could have caused the voltage spike you suspect. (There are no electical lines running through this area.)

Thank you. You may have saved my life.

P.S. Then we'll see if the weird # keeps happening. lol

Have you ever looked into the history of your house by going to the local libary and serching through old news papers for anything that might have happend in your house over the +100 years. Or ask people in your area if they know anything this is something I would look at .

Homer: Bart, I don't want to alarm you, but there may be a
bogeyman or bogeymen in the house!

Hahaa...I'm just kidding, Val.

But seriously, it sounds freaky, and for one reason or another...I get a bad vibe from some of your pics there...I haven't the foggiest Idea why, as I said, But the one with the picture of the door quirks me, and the stairwell gave me the creeps, to be sure.

For some reason, I think someone fell/was shoved down them? I don't know, just a thought. Sorry for being a pain. Later.

Hi everyone.

Well, a couple of small things have been happening around here. Starting about 2 months ago the "whatever" got an obsession with my deodorant...yeah, you heard me. *
* Every morning when I get up it is rolled WAY out and I have to roll it back down - as I said, been going on for almost 2 months now.

Then last Tuesday evening my daughter came home from school and dumped out her box of safety pins to put a new patch on her jacket. All the safety pins were closed (there were about 7 of them). She opens one to pin the patch, and about that time I call her downstairs. About 15 minutes later we have to go play league so she goes to her room to get her cap. There on the bed is all 7 safety pins wide open.

On another note, I have found out that a man that lives about 1-1/2 blocks down (don't know if I shared this before or not) also has poltergeistic activity. So maybe it's a street thing.

Beats me.

I have to say that I read through this entire post on the edge of my seat. I certainly don't envy you in the least.

I must admit that seeing the "original" photo of the house made the hair on my arms stand on end. I sensed a lot of unhappiness there.

The photos of the stairwell made me uneasy as well. I felt very "penned in" and "suffocated".

I think that what you've experienced thus far is just the start of something that could potentially become very unpleasant. And for some reason, I feel that it has "zeroed in" on your daughter.

I have no grand theories, and can't say WHY this is, with any degree of certainty - but just ask that you tread very carefully, and keep a watchful eye on your daughter. Especially whenever you start getting more in-depth with your investigation of the grocer, and the basement.

Best of luck to you, and please keep us up-to-date!

WHOOP WHOOP! My new doggy sees it! You should see him right now. We are in the computer room and he is on the floor and he just keeps staring at the stairs and scooting backwards! He's all the way against the wall now and is trying to back further.

Update on doggy stuff.

Last night shortly after going to bed (I'd say around 15 minutes) Bear started growling. He did this for maybe a couple of minutes. He was looking at my bedroom door which is also in line-of-sight of my daughter's bedroom door. My daughter had gone to bed about an hour before and was sound asleep. There was no movement in the house that I heard.

He did this on Sunday night as well, but has not done it any other nights. The first night he did it I eventually made him stop, but this time I just let him growl as long as he felt like he needed to. Like I said, after around 2 minutes or so he stopped but continued to watch the door for awhile. Then he laid back down and fell asleep.

It was interesting enough to get me to piss off my mom by not getting off the computer! I HATE things that want to interrupt my restespecially when I have tests in the morning. There are a few tricks I have learned, over time, and they are used by several of my friends. Noisy music playing all night long, right next to my bed, keeps them from disrupting your sleepespecially things that make you happy or are very noise-intensive. (Black Mages, techno) Second, saltwaterits a cleansing agent, flicked form the fingertips onto ALL aspects of the room. Holy water is just saltwater touched by a priest. I just do it to one roommy room, after it has gotten noisy. No, it is certainly NOT permanent, but it allows me to sleep. If youve had enough, at some point, before somethings done about it, those help. They know I wont listen to them. I wont get out of bed for them. Also, if you WANT to keep calm, amethysts are good for it. Keeping a chunk under the pillow sweetens dreams, a bit.

Please tell me that you have had an electrician out to the place. Uncles an electrician, and from experience, not a good idea to wait on. Youre asking for a house fire. The chemicals form electrical fires make you wonkywent through an air conditioning vent smoking at work. I worked near hot oil and an open grill not knowing which way was up. Not good.

Val, looks like the pooch knows.
This does not surprise me. I have a dog who knows and I also had another dog (he ran away cause it scared him) that my place is "being watched".

As far as the neighbor having stuff happen, there are two possibilities.

1) Same entity(s) in both homes.
2) Different entities.

The reason I say this is that, most people do not buy it (enter Springer........ just kidding buddy) but most homes these days, weather 100 years old or 100 seconds old, have at least some level of activity. Most will go unnoticed indefinitely. Others notice immediately.

Reasons for this are many. Battle grounds, ancient burial grounds, ex-tenents spirit (owner or renter....or in my case, my home was used as a migrant worker home by many landowners over the past 100 years) etc etc etc.

Personally, I do not think your entity and the one at your neighbors are connected. Gut feeling.

Glad to see all is well, U2U me if needed.

Blessed Be
Whitewolf

Very gripping an unusual going ons here! Whoa! That is all i can say... whoa
!

Back to the dog. Has it been having "accidents" around the house? If so... i would probably indicate that the dog is # scared, and that something really bad is going down!

Keep us posted, on anything else that happens.

Something similar happened when my parent remodeled. We took out the sheetrock, and being tired, didn't finish putting it all back up. That night we all had nightmares. My mother swears that she woke up and had people standing around her bed. (We heard her screaming). My older brother and I both heard crying, and thought it was my younger brother. That is, until he came in and asked what was going on....

The BIG stuff has gone away, but there are a lot of little things that happen.

I think you may have unsettled the dust a little. It may calm with time. I wish I could come for a visit.

Okay, I read more into this.

I've looked at some of the pictures, and I definately don't get a good feeling. It's almost that of panic. If you have one available, keep a video recorder with you. When your dog starts acting up, start recording. You may be able to pick something up.

IAP,

Yep, I think the dog sees it.

No accident problems. In fact, I think I was supposed to find this li'l doggy...he's something else.

He has now developed a NIGHTLY ritual. Every morning at approximately 10 minute to 3 he wakes up, jumps off the foot of the bed and goes on a patrol. The first few nights he did it I was laying there half awake and pissed off thining he was going off to whiz some place and I'd drag myself out of bed and try to get him to go outside (first night I drug him out - no results). But he wasn't even sniffing or anything, just kind of wandering around the house.

I finally just gave up. Now when he wakes up I lay there a few seconds listening to his tags klink off into the dark and fall back asleep. I think he's my little centaurion! He has not had a growling-at-nothing incident in the past few days, but my son just moved back in with us, so the activity may change due to that.

I don't have a video recorder...maybe someday I'll get one. What I could do is just grab the digi-cam and start snapping shots around the area when the dog freaks. I'll try that next time.

yep, i'd pack my stuff and find a nice NEW home.

Yeah, I know I'm a chicken...
