EARTHQUAKE! Long one ... haven't 'felt one in a few years ...
waiting on the reports .... WOW!

Cell phones are down.
Surprised I'm able to post here.

Interesting that we were all speculating on the New Madrid going off because of the eclipse, and here we are three days before it and we have an earthquake here in the mid atlantic. huh. We don't usually get them.

Neat! Getting some boots on the ground info is cool.

I wonder if we will see anymore posts like this as we get closer to the 8th.

You are a bit closer to Tewksbury NJ than I am. SO I'm sure you shook more.
Waiting a bit for aftershocks. I have to go walk the dog .. he got upset with the shaking.

i live by the lincoln tunnel.
i was in a quake in LA, and it was a shuffling feeling.
this was a banging, i was worried they were doing construction too close to my building, then i leaped up, cause it was not stopping, about to grab the cat and escape.

too much banging banging, compared to the shuffling feeling side to side in LA.

Yes, mine too. At first I thought it was a helicopter (as I'm not too far from the Willow Grove AFB). Then the intensity increased and the dog started to get spooked. That's how I knew it was an earthquake.

I was thinking if this was just the opening act for the eclipse on Monday myself, lol. I might go sharpen my sword just in case...

I hope that everyone is OK. I just said on a twitch NYC walkabout stream last night that I was glad that NYC was not prone to earthquakes. How common is this ?

Hope it isn't a foreshock, meaning bigger is coming your way.

I'm on the other side of NYC as Tewksbury and felt it. NYC is half way closer.

Interesting, that's the first one I've heard about up there since the one that shook DC in 2011.

Just sayin, earthquakes around magnitude 5 (this was reportedly a 4.7 or 4.8) happen pretty much daily on Earth.

Obviously they are not that common in this region, but also not unheard of.

I'm just pointing this out for the folks who want to link it to the eclipse.

Of course there are usually earthquakes near eclipse days. Because there are earthquakes of this magnitude every day.

You can see that they are that common here.

Who feels it can be variable. It depends what you're doing at the time. It also depends on exactly what's under your home or place of work or wherever you were. (The ground isn't exactly the same under every structure in a given area.) It depends on exactly how your building was built and how it has settled over the years. There's a ton of variables of whether or not your feel it.

TV News is reporting it now.

New Jersey activated it's Emergency Management System.

Guess they are checking gas lines and waiting on aftershocks.

A little news about this as it's still new.
From: New York Post

A rare earthquake shook the New York area Friday morning, rattling parts of the Big Apple, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The preliminary 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey, around 10:23 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey.

Tremors could be felt as far north as New Paltz, New York and as far south as Delaware.

my favorite line from this story:

Kelly Shone, a mom of two who works nights in Newark, Del., said she felt a “slight rumbling” while in bed Friday morning.

“I thought it was my husband walking heavily downstairs at first,” Shone told The Post.

How do you tell your husband that he's fat in a public way... geeshs.

I guess any damage will be known after survey teams go out in the field and start checking bridges, buildings, and utilities.

At least at this point nobody was hurt or killed.

I lived in Japan and had tons of earthquakes there.

I always said there are two kinds .... the back and forth ones and the up and down ones.

This one here was back and forth.

Up there in NYC and NJ it would have been up and down.

Once you get over 3.2 or so, at least in japan, it switches from back and forth to up and down.
