Alice Springs big city in the middle, Pine Gap the blacked out area kinda SSW of it.

EDIT: Was having another look around. Right dead centre here ( maps.google.com...,+Australia&ll=-23.805656,133.905830&spn=0.153620,0.240704&t=k&hl=en ) there is a big what appears to be runway..too far out to be an airport i think. Any air force bases around there?

That's not Pine Gap.

For the period that I had Keyhole installed I did find Pine Gap but you cannot zoom in far at all, here's the picture I took.

Because I'm from Australia Pine Gap is the first thing I went looking for.

This is Pine Gap.

This is the link the other guy gave and claimed Pine Gap was that blacked out area, but it's not. If you move the map a tiny bit SW you will see Pine Gap.

Sorry about that guys, I knew it was around Alice Springs somewhere..I didn't really have an exact location though.

Well, that's essentially what I meant in my post. If you're close enough and can get some really good visual data, yes they are going to care. Especially if you're a spy of sorts, or they were starting a new test program.
But the fact that you can still view the low resolution sat data (nowhere near current I might add) shows that they do in fact not give a rats' about the general public peeping at the base. "Nothing to see here folks, move along."

Are those mounds created from underground explosions? or are they from excavating?

those aren't mounds they're craters, thats the nuclear test range of the nevada test site, you can see equipment around the perimeter used to clean up some of the radiation from the top layer of soil.

on a different note I was browsing around the ukraine the other day and found chernobyl, if anyone's interested heres the link:

Thanks for the info. Thats actually what I orginally thought they were, but its hard to tell if they are concave or a crater or convex like a mound.

No, it was probably done for the local affiliate that carries Oprah. You can see the field to the right has something about Channel 3.

The screen thing could just be a reflection from satellite equipment.
