this year is supposed to be a bad CME year.

Why?
Solar cycle 25 has just begun. According to some we are now in a deep solar minimum. Those some say that because of low solar activity we're entering an ice age. Hadn't you heard?

I guess there are way more sunspots on the south hemisphere than the northern hemisphere or something like that. So we should get more sunspots in the next year if they figure it right. Now this does not mean they are going to be big, just more of this kind of event. They do not know if this will last even a year. I read about that about a week or so ago. Overall cycle twenty five will be about the same as twenty four, just the first part of it might be wilder.

According to what I have read, this year is supposed to be a bad CME year. This is a tiny one compared to what is to come they say.

It's small... but it is a bullseye.

It could still do damage because of that.

It will just short out a pile of Alexa and hey googles that people just bought. And also those Ring doorbells. That way the companies can blame many failures on the CMEs hitting the earth. Forget the fact that so many of the Rings are having problems already...it will be an act of the sun god after the CME hits.

For over 6 years since moving to MI, I've practically salivated every time the predictions include the Grand Rapids area possibly being able to see the aurora borealis -- I had zero chance of seeing them growing up in FL, so the possibility up here excited me every time.

However, the local 10pm-1am peak window is closing, for when we (the planet) moves out of the CME stream, and once again, I ain't seeing jack in the northern sky
If it's not cloudy, it just doesn't materialize. Maybe I should quit getting my hopes up, I have better odds of going through a MI tornado (BTDT already)

And we could protect against it. We have had decades to harden our grid and infrastructure.

We should have built up spare parts at least. Maybe even started manufacturing the parts in the US.

I agree but have they, granted it was a few years ago reading about the grid going down in the northeast. There were some essential huge transformers that then had to be custom made. The theory was if we had a huge CME that zapped the power grid it could be years before we could replace them. Not to mention the mother of all CME could make living on the surface or outdoors during the day problematic.

For those that would like to have a daily, semi-indepth explaination of space weather in a more forgiving yet technical layman's style, try:

"Suspicious 0bservers" on YouTube.
m.youtube.com...

I've been getting their daily forcasts for years now and it's incredibly interesting and reassuring, yet they don't pull any punches either.

Highly recommended. Enjoy!

Hi Phage,

What's your opinion on this supposed ice age? Would be interested to hear.

Cheers

The storm , as I said above, is headed right at Earth. If the storm was from an X class flair. It would be a kill shot.

From the OP:

The incoming solar weather can actually cause communication disruptions such as GPS positioning errors and interference within our power grid.
and interference within our power grid

Anyone with solar storm knowledge can confirm or hopefully deny that it’s maybe like an earthquake?

I’m wondering about sound science specifying they have a before, middle, and end? And if so is it an hour-days thing or can it be much longer? Worst case I’m getting at is do these things “warm up” or “come in waves”?

I seem to recall a lot of doom porn over the decade or so, talking about kill shots from the sun early ‘21 into 22....

Although this one most likely will not affect our power grid I will never forget the convoys of semi trucks full of supplies that were heading somewheres underground a few years back and preparing for a major cme. That again is a very good warning sign to watch for.

Yeah , 2012
That has done passed.

Still waiting on a link where Earth has taken a direct hit from a storm caused by a X class flair.

If it has happened many times it should not be hard to find one.

Thanks for linking that.

It was not a direct hit.

so the March 6 flare was more Earthward facing than the previous ones.

This may have been a direct hit.

The Carrington Event may have been a kill shot, if it hit today.

Yeah, I know about them fellas. They think there are going to be a large number of sunspots this cycle. But you said "this year." Solar max won't occur for 5 or 6 years. Like said, this cycle just started.

So we have a small group saying it's going to be an epic cycle. A small group (one person, mostly) saying we're going to freeze. And panel of Solar scientists saying it's going to be about average. The latter panel did pretty well with #24. I guess we'll find out who's right in 5 or 6 years.
