Don't forget that a lot of union contracts are negotiated based off of prevailing minimum wage, so a worker who isn't making anywhere near minimum wage now will see a marked increase in proportion to the increase in the new minimum wage, and that will put them well over the salaried employees at the same place of work in many cases. So those businesses will either have to similarly increase what they're playing the salaried help or fire many of them or something.

And all of that will further tie in to the price increases, etc., across the economy.

In the UK we have service charge included but I do think many in the catering industry are underpaid.

My rule of thumb is that if the food and the service is good then I will always tip.

My rule of thumb is if the tip is included in the meal bill, I don't eat there. Not because I am cheap, I've given tips in excess of $200 for service for 6. It's because if some asshole is going to tell me what I have to tip, regardless of good or crappy service, they can pound sand.

Cheers - Dave

What if all companies have been underpaying at basically every sub management level.. and they have been permitted to do that because of lobbying to keep min wage and unionization low???

What if every sub manager position should get a raise..

Maybe she wasn’t a very good bartender? 2.13 plus 18 to 24% is a pretty good wage. Of course if the service sucks the tip drops.

What if you don't worry about what is in your neighbor's pocket and worry about what is in yours?

Of course, if you did that then it would be on YOU to do something about it...

Much easier just to blame everyone else, amIright?

Last time I saw this come up in the news the people who work these jobs were asking AOC to STFU and leave it alone because she will be killing their income. I would LOVE their income to go up and not tip anymore, I would save a fortune.

My friend works a professional job, full benefits, requires college education .. she tried to limit her hours to as little as possible to bartend more because she made 2-3x as much money bartending because of tips.

Some of my best friends are bartenders and working girls. Both get generous tips. LOL.

Because who do you think pays for the loss...

We do.. well your Canadian is you don’t, but I do..

When people go to the ER that cost just gets passed to the consumer..

When a company pays people less than they could ever support just themselves for working a full time work week, who do you think covers the extra??

Tax payers, friends and family exc..

I have never understood the concept of people thinking they festering pits they ignore will not bust their safe little bubble..

Ignore public schools and watch the ghettos become pits of violence and ignorance, and think that won’t spill over into your nice white picket fence if you want to..

All civilization has followed a set trend.. the wealthy create systems to keep and multiply their wealth till they have so much the peasants get pissed and burn it all down..

Wash , rinse , repeat all throughput history..

Every socialist revolution and many other societal collapses have all really boiled down to that..

Nice subtle way to play the race card there comrade. May I suggest you take your socialist and everyone gets a trophy for breathing drivel and stick it into that festering pit of yours?

I don’t think AOC knows what indentured servitude is. I don’t know of any waiters employed as a condition of paying back a loan from Applebee’s — but I may be wrong. Things may have drastically changed since I worked there.

When the rich get government money it's fine.

But when the poor get government money it's a travesty.

Friendly reminder that if you earn less than minimum wage after tips in the US, the business is required to pay you enough to reach minimum wage under the Fair Labor and Standards Act (FLSA: www.dol.gov... ).

The fact that AOC is unaware of this means that she never was in a situation were existing laws applied to her after tips. Though needless to say many (most) people are unaware of this law.

Friendly reminder...

Minimum wage and a 40 hour work week will not support one person in the worst , reasonable living conditions..

Which is just inherently insane..

How is it legal to work your employees for what we all agree is a full time job, but pay them less than one person could possibly survive off of..

Meaning you need 2 min wage jobs just to break even.. and that is zero emergency fund.. or crazy extra expenses..

Yup..

The hilarious/extremely sad part is the legion of regular joes they hype up to support them in doing it..

Exactly like Obama said they dangle god, guns or whatever the fear mongering flavor of the month is and get them to ignore the fact they are being robbed blind..

Historic reminder....if you need to take on two jobs to make ends meet, then you do that. Being lazy and wanting others to give you money to live is the mindset of a child. Grow up already comrade.

My father who, after serving in the U.S. Navy during D-Day, worked 3 jobs to put food on our table and a roof over our heads. That is what you do.....not sit and whine that you want more money for the same work.

I'm sick of others wanting my money because they fail or refuse to make themselves better, learn more, and advance to make more for more work.

Friendly reminder, those jobs are not designed for you to be "supporting yourself" or a family... they are minimum wage jobs. They are starter jobs to get you some training and then you work your way up or find other employment once you've demonstrated some skills.

People's personal decisions to have children or other expenses prior to being able to afford to do so is not of concern to the business.
