Well this isn't over. In trying to clean this mess up in a convoluted way the league has left the door open to union action:

The NFL Players Association announced Tuesday it filed a grievance against the league's new national anthem policy.

In its statement, the NFLPA said the NFL agreed to hold discussions in hopes of finding a mutual solution to the issue.

The statement in full reads:

Our union filed its non-injury grievance today on behalf of all players challenging the NFL's recently imposed anthem policy. The union's claim is that this new policy, imposed by the NFL's governing body without consultation with the NFLPA, is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement and infringes on player rights.

In advance of our filing today, we proposed to the NFL to begin confidential discussions with the NFLPA Executive Committee to find a solution to this issue instead of immediately proceeding with litigation. The NFL has agreed to proceed with those discussions and we look forward to starting them soon.

www.nfl.com...

We're going to look back at this and think about how frickin stupid this chapter of the NFL was.

On the other hand the Hall of Fame game is less than a month away. And I'm ready for some football.

They should be more concerned about the length of the games going well over 3 hours and boring the ever living hell out of me.

So do you think you have a "right" to bad mouth your employer or hurt the brand and keep your job?

The fact is this "protest" is nothing but a big lie. What they don't talk about is the extremely high crime rate for black men. They are responsible for over half of all violent crime. Shouldn't that be part of this "discussion"? What about the fact the VAST majority of black murder is committed by black men? It's 93% and whites are like 85%. That should tell you something. If you look at the rates of white on black crime vs black on white crime you'see see that is anyone is threatened it's whites. Also, whites are more likely to be killed by cops and more whites are killed more by cops. NONE of this is in the media or coming from the NFL players.

I still don't get why people want others to be forced to stand.

If you force them to show respect then it is not genuine so it's not respect.

I just don't get it

Force that respect. That'll learn em

Are you forced to do things you don't want to do at your job? These guys get millions to play a game!

Not my point.

I'm more interested in why people are in favor of forcing them to show this sign of respect when it's not genuine.

Don't you want them to want to?
But if not # it? Forced respect is better than none?

Notice I didn't comment on if the league should make them.
I'm interested in why people want forced, not genuine respect

And they didn't care about standing on the field till the league got paid to have them do it.
Not an issue before. Why now?

It's like making people pretend to like you.

Or as we call it in the sales world, 'visiting California on business'.

Nobady is forcing them to stand now.
They can stay in the locker room if they wish and not participate.
They are not being allowed to protest while they are at work.
So deal with it.

Like the ratings didn't drop enough the last couple years. They must want to continue that trend.

You should play fantasy football. It completely changes the way you experience the game.

Its stupid.
You should want them to want to. Not force them to have a fake display or else...

I don't mean you personally

I did it once, it's not for me as I found it far too time consuming and myself rooting for the Giants to win but still allowing the opposing running back, who I had, to rack up 500 yards.

To be honest I really havent watched much football the past few years since the games have gotten kinda boring for me.

They are not being forced to stand, they just aren't allowed to protest during the anthem.

No, I actually want to go to California and force those passive-aggressive weenies to like me. Or admit that they don't.

All they need to do is get rid of Thursday Night Football and everything would improve. TNF is not very good.

I agree. That's what led to this mess. They should have just looked the other way if they didn't like the protest.

This particular stupidity was one of the things the Russians admitted to promoting, to further unrest in our country.

So many people on this site were absolutely irate about it, ready to fire football players over it, agreeing with trump, who for whatever reasons, has sided with the Putin agenda.

I'm glad to see these players have the audacity to challenge stupidity.

The reality that the protest was against so many young black unarmed men being shot dead in the street by law enforcement.

We should join with those who stand against ending our freedom of expression. It's not a value in Russia, but it is here.
Isn't it? Or is that a thing of the past, too?
