OPCW to send chemical weapons investigators to Syria’s Douma – statement

Since 2014, the OPCW has an ongoing mandate to investigate suspected chemical weapons attacks in Syria. The mission is designed “to establish facts surrounding allegations of the use of toxic chemicals... for hostile purposes in the Syrian Arab Republic.” The scope of the fact-finding mission is to determine whether banned substances were used, but not to assign blame. The incident allegedly occurred in the Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday. It was reported by several rebel-linked activist groups, including the controversial White Helmets, who accused the Syrian troops of dropping chlorine-filled munitions on the area. They also claimed it affected dozens of civilians, and footage of children being allegedly treated for poisoning has appeared online. Damascus has called the alleged attack a “fabrication.” Russian military specialists have explored the area as Jaysh al-Islam militants occupying Douma began to evacuate from the city as part of a Russian-brokered deal with Damascus. Moscow said the specialists had found no traces of chemical weapons or any victims treated for chemical poisoning. READ MORE: 'Post-fact mindset in US: First punishment & then search for evidence to rationalize war-mongering' The OPCW’s announcement came shortly before an expected UN Security Council meeting on the alleged Douma incident. Both Russia and the US are expected to roll out draft resolutions calling for an international investigation into the purported attack. On Monday, the UN said it was unable to “independently verify the allegations” regarding Douma. “We're not in a position at this point to independently verify the allegations but, obviously, any allegation of continued use of chemical weapons is extremely, extremely troubling,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said.

The rebels were fleeing the area and were likely the ones responsible for this. They wanted the situation just what is occurring to happen, the lying hypocritical western alliance ready and willing like vampires to attack Syria.

Hopefully, this investigation will expose the truth, but I doubt, the sinister US and their flunkies will do anything to abort this investigation.

Just use your logic. Why in the world would Assad use chemical weapons on a fleeing army?

Rebels surrendered hours after the alleged chlorine attack. Go figure. It wasn't chlorine that made them surrender. It was thermobarics and cluster incendiary that did.

I wonder if they actureally will use Tommies again. Probs. not, maybe though. Cause your right, even though Russia wouldn't do that, they have enough defences to there right now & we need to show people chemicals are bad to prove a point. It's not okay, they don't get the picture, Tommy didn't do it. Idk our artillery capabilities so idk if they have another option.

Diffrence between most counties and russia saying this is that Putin takes nothing from nobody.

If he says russia would respond...i absolutely utterly believe they will

Russia is completely all bark and no bite.

There is NO WAY that they will respond in a way that'll cause American casualties.

If they bark loud enough and scare away the coalition then it'll be a huge victory for Russian interests and I fear the worst what it may do to our political narratives.

I think the world will be shocked when Russia decides to stand up and bite, which they will.

Chemical Weapons inspectors are on their way to the Syrian town that was attacked with a Chemical weapon.

www.militarytimes.com...

I don't think the coalition will strike Syria before the inspector team reports their findings.

Russia may be fed up playing the sap and ready to defend its turf and that spells bad news!

Are you saying Syria is Russia’s turf?

that is why it ill take a global shift in consciousness before anything will happen
people need to start doing some serious self reflection about what is good for them , what is the right thing to be doing

it all starts with yourself!

Russia won't do anything. They are trying to achieve better alliances through the world. They will not, I repeat will not strike by military force directly. They may sanction, expel, or do some kgb stuff, they won't stop our missiles or strike back though. Plain & simple.

Let’s not forget we have two big egos sitting at the head of the USA and Russia any type of logic and reasoning can be thrown out the window. This is a megalomaniac case. How long has putin been in power again?

Idk awhile maybe? lol. It's not the ego we should be fearful of, it's economic effects & international relationships setting sail to other trade partners which could spell trouble. That in this instance will only turn tables for maybe 12 small countries. Which isn't globally catastrophic. Hence, all the hooblah & smack talk.

I wouldn’t bet your life savings on that if I were you ......you have a lot of threads on your musings of dif thIngs....

This however isn’t musings and you clearly don’t know putin, his past, the history of the region, the strategic and Economical advantage of it for Russia. Nor their alliances w people in the region and what they all stand to gain.

If this was true Russia would never have helped Assad to this breaking point.

Russia cant show weakness now, because they would risk loosing face. That can compremise any future relations with other supporting nations that might be looking towards russian relationship as a alternative to US.

If the US policy maker walk arround with the same opinion as you do..... This can become very dangures. Because if Russia du retaliate they will hit every airfeield and fleet they US have in the region.
Russia are capable of doing this by useing missiles stationed in russia.

The point of vew you have can be from non other then someone who hopes the US will provoke a war.

Russia are putting their forces into Douma. Russia does this to protect the city from a US attack.
