How big was this bag? Or how small were the heads? Because 54 human heads sounds like it would have to be a pretty large bag. Also quite heavy.

My first thought was of the Elite Hunting Club in the film Hostel

Is there evidence of a crime here? Perhaps the owner of the bag needed help with something and 27 people offered to lend him a hand, two if necessary.

Well, I got to hand it to you- those were *hand*some puns.

My theory, as wackjob as it might sound:
The hands belong to people whose fingerprints may be valuable. Once they were used, they were thrown out.

Some forensics person is going to have quite a job. First thing to determine: Are these single hand removals? Do any of the hands match? Were they professionally removed or just hacked off with an axe? Have they been stored in some sort of preservative?

Could be medical waste but seriously, what medical facility would save up that many severed hands?

Certainly an intriguing find. Weren't there severed feet washing up on the west coast a few years ago?
