What you Like creates more similar content to be "served", creating an echo chamber in which you greatly reduce the breadth of viewpoints you are exposed to.

Its an obvious problem. And it could come down to electioneering in the end.

first up, there are tricks around this.
there are a ton of adblock addons, AND fbadblock addons.
i love websites that complain to me for using addons, that means im doing the right thing using them.

second, it is selfish of me, but i do not generally go on to other people's fb links. if you go to your friends' pages, they are either hypnotizted left-right or right-left. they know it all. they post links about how great the right is, how great the left is. how they are informed because they read the news.

i basically go on fb in the middle of the night, reply to my emails and then log off. i have not been on fb in weeks.

i go to my gym, and i bring my own remote control, and i change ALL the bs mainstream stations, anything with the news. i put on cartoons, movie channels, and sports.

fb is no different than cnnmnbcmtv. i HATE seeing the news, and fb is the news.

so i do not use it.

i like instagram, because i just follow my friends, artists, and hot chicks. thats it. and i can post pics of my adventures without much too many words.

get adblockers for EVERYTHING.

Ummm, don't be mad at me but I actually caused the passing of new laws governing the use of social media like FB. The owners of this website know about it lol.

It's complicated.
Let's just say I'm a huge # up and leave it at that for today.
Sigh....

Facebook asks users for nude photos in project to combat revenge porn

Boy what a slippery slope. There must be millions of underage users being solicited in such a perverted way.

Facebook wants to gather nudes?
To further pervert sense of justice?

I have a facebook account.

I keep it mainly as a commenting plug-in. It's getting less and less useful for that as more and more sites are closing off to commentary.

I went through the facebook phase and stopped using it for what it's supposed to be when I took a step back one day and realize I was spending hours on it like a drone watching TV.

Facebook would be awesome if I was 12. Showing off my new GI Joes and Transformers. But I'm not 12...and making juvenile "adults" jealous doesn't quite do anything for me soooo it's only ATS and YouTube for me.

Both for the news and the lulz.

It's not that I'm "scared" of being tracked or watched or need privacy. I just genuinely don't care about some online persona everyone is pretending to be...That s*it ain't real.

But do what you want I won't stop you. Show pictures of whatever and get all the attention in the world...have a freaking ball. It's almost like LARPing for some. I already played online RPGs in my teen years and have grown up since.

LOL People think if you use FB you HAVE TO be juvenile and drama seeking. You do know that you can use FB to keep in touch with families and friends that live across the globe right?

You can also NOT give them any info about yourself. I have an account that is set to private/friends only, I only have friends on FB that I actually know in real life and I did not share with them any info I feel is invasive, such as phone number, high school, address etc etc. I don't allow FB to give out my location and when I post I'm not seeking any validation of any sort.

People think because you use FB you have to be a certain way or use it a certain way. It's the person that is the problem, not the platform. The sad part is, people are very easily manipulated and pretty much oblivious to privacy issues with social media. They are also attention seeking and seeking validation from peers on what they do on a daily basis. That is a Human race problem, not a social media problem. Social media just makes it easier for these types of cynical people to get their fix.

There have been a lot of people that are down on FB but let me give you another perspective.

I am a former military child. We moved every 2-3 years. We were ripped away from our friends and "home" every 2-3 years.
FB has been a godsend for people like me. It is an easy way to stay in touch no matter where in the world you are.

My entire graduating class of 60 all still keeps in touch with the exception of 2 people. We graduated longer ago than most people are old on this site! That in itself is amazing!

Now don't get me wrong, I know what you are saying about the dopamine stuff. I know a large family that all lives together. They all like each others photos and comment on it, yet they all live with each other, which I think is weird. I also think it is weird when people like their own photos, it makes me laugh every time.
More than anything else, I have learn some true colors of people by what they post. There has been some stuff that has truly shocked me by relatives and close friends, that I would have never known, especially during the election. I really learned who was very closed minded and who was downright crazy!

I do all that too....And have never been on FB.

It's called staying in touch. Granted it takes effort but the people important in your life deserve your effort.

Imagine what people did before FB....Actually have a conversation?!?!? OMG!!

Meme's man. Its all about the memes.

Seriously...it you reserved judgement about people, you'd make a more salient point that wasn't full of preconceived notions.

What preconceived notion? That most people are shallow attention whores? Cannot go a day without needing some sort of validation of how grandiose and important they are?

Where I'm from that's just a plain observable fact. Maybe it's different in Texas.

"I always felt kinda jealous of the people who could post a photo of their coffee and get 101 likes, while you have a baby/get married/post something profound and it gets a mere 20 likes. "

That, right there, is why I didn't post when my mother passed away. I knew, just like in high school, there were the "popular kids" still, and the unpopular (like me) . I wasn't going to run the risk of posting and getting like 10 condolences or whatever and someone popular's dinner gets 75 likes and 100 remarks. It would hurt. Just like back in school and I wasn't even going to go there.

I don't use it much anymore. Only to like other people's stuff occasionally and to keep in touch with a few of my close friends.

I also see how much everyone uses it as a platform to brag or to fight with strangers and it's rather upsetting to know some of the people you once thought were decent are really horrible to others.

How far we've come... and THIS I blame social media on. No one thinks any more. No one investigates. If it's not on YT or Twitter, or if it IS... then it's as far as anyone needs to go. Post it, ask about it. never actually put the effort in.

I do a lot of thinking and investigating, in fact, I do most of it on forums and social media like Reddit, ATS, Facebook, etc...

Are you suggesting that in order to investigate I should go to a library or conduct interviews in person? Maybe have a physical office so I can invite friends and experts from all over the world to have a conversation about a topic I am interested in?

Unfortunately, ATS has the same dopamine feedback loops that fakebook has with their flag and star system. Every system in place on a social networking scale, that has likes or any kind of thumbs up to generate positive or negative feedback, uses these tools to get users "hooked".

Yes, ATS is suspect and very much in the same genre.

They should take away all the stars and flags and see how well they do.
