I cant get over the thought Baltimore of all places had Confederate War Hero statues .
Irony ? Facetious ? Sarcasm ?
Maybe they were "rubbing it" into the South's face ?
Or did someone at some time have a civilized grown up thought that the North/South ideology ended in 1865 ?

This is what is interesting:

The city took action as several local groups were preparing their own plans to yank down the statues, in much the same way a Confederate statue was taken down in Durham, N.C., this week.

This was, apparently, a reaction to groups planning to illegally destroy/remove the statues. So, I guess they got their wishes one way or the other, using a real threat of property destruction to coerce the City Council to vote on removal to prevent the destruction.

That's actually funny, and a bit ironic.

Well I'm sure that won't embolden others to destroy public monuments..............

Well good for the government of Baltimore !!

At least they did this "legally".

Now they need to go after the statues and monuments of slave owners !!

Go 14th Amendment !!

"On Monday, more than 200 SJW zealots held a protest inside the American Museum of Natural History in New York City to take down the supposedly “racist” statue of former President Theodore Roosevelt. The protest’s organizers, NYC Stands with Standing Rock and Decolonize This Place, also called for Columbus Day to be renamed Indigenous People’s Day."

St. Patrick's Day has to go, too. He was half-Roman and half-British and Romans had slaves. The Vikings who founded Dublin were slavers who sold captives and were duped by Patrick into accepting Christianity when he used the symbol for the sun god and called it the Celtic Cross.

The African tribes who sold each other's captives to the dealers who then sold them to the British for the colonies were always slavers. Seems like we need some investigations in case we need to tear down statues of MLK.

Good job Baltimore.

Hopefully others will follow their lead.

However, Baltimore is in the North...I don't have as much hope for the South.

the city was also looking to avoid another chralottesville it looks like though.

The statues have been removed nearly a year after a mayoral commission recommended taking down the public commemorations to Taney at Mount Vernon Place and to Lee and Jackson, who were depicted together on horseback in a monument in the Wyman Park Dell.

That commission had recommended keeping two other artifacts: the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Mount Royal Avenue near Mosher Street and the Confederate Women's of Maryland Monument at Bishop Square Park. But in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend, the city council voted to remove all four monuments.

www.npr.org...

so, now, it looks like our own local gov'ts can't have the freedom to decide what actions should be taken, that decision will be made based on fear of the actions of a small minority with differing opinions, living in other cities, other states, heck other countries who feel they have the right to flock into their communities to wage a battle against one another.

SAD!!!

Then why did segregation go on so long?

Because he never took up arms against the Union.

The issue here are traitors who took up arms against the Union.

Losers don't deserve participation trophies, especially not traitors who were lucky to escape with their lives.

What an ignorant and knee jerk move, this is totally embarrassing,a school in Long Beach where I grew up was changed from Robt E lee,to my cousin's name an activist,so the government thinks it is ok to go from one extreme to another, the government practices racism, now they turned backs on true to there roots group, only reason dixie flag is racist,is because the government says so,most of the klan are in idaho and surrounding areas, but these are liberal states,so they can't be racist

Don't worry. Every time they do something political like this, they will end up becoming like Detroit. First it was street names, then building names, now it is statues, next it will be monuments, they tried getting various sports teams to change their names due to "cultural appropriation". It won't stop. There will always be one more "symbol to remind them of past oppression". They are already "doxxing" supporters and getting them fired from their jobs. Next it will burning down their homes and businesses.

I agree so when are they going to change the name of the city from Baltimore to something else?

The brits lost the revolutionary war,the war that they fought to prevent us from even becoming a country, so why is the city still named in honor of lord Baltimore?
why is Maryland still named in honor of Henrietta Maria of France, wife of Charles I of England?
why are there so many counties and cities in Maryland still named in honor of british royality?

of the 24 Maryland counties only 8 are not named for british royalty

the brits lost the war to keep us enslaved as colonist so why do those losers still have so many states, counties ,cities, and streets named in their honor?

perhaps it`s about money, maybe it`s just too expensive to deal with the logistics of renaming entire states, counties, and cities? Maybe being politically correct is ok only when it doesn`t cost a lot of money?
maybe the determining factor in whether something is offensive and insensitive to people is how much it will cost to change it?

legally they didn`t commit treason.

the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family

They never intended to nor did they ever attempt to overthrow the government of the U.S. or to kill the president. They merely tried to leave the union.

Same mentality as those destroying the Egyptian sites, the Tibetian temples, the rest of the sacred and historical monuments and statues. Get rid of all signs of humanity for the seventh cleansing.

I WISH that the same bombastic behavior would be used for something useful like the nuclear plants about to kill us, Fukushima, the ocean die off's, starvation and disease.

Just for the sake of being nice, we'll let them put the removed statues up in a museum or special gallery.

The only country that actively destroys its cultural heritage is Saudi Arabia, whose government just as ISIL also follows Salafi version of Sunni Islam.

en.wikipedia.org...

Might have to add the US to that extremely short list .

Free from the CURSE of that statue, Baltimore will be the shining beacon on a hill, showing the country what an "Even Greater America" looks like!
