Thanks Muzzy for all you do here on this forum.

Glad to say we have another year to talk about the "earth shaking" news.

Another year of quake geeks talking about the maps you and puterman create, swarms in and around Yellowstone, Eric's ramblings that entertain us, the talks about the Big One in Cali, New Zealand, Japan and can't forget the New Madrid.

Latest big quake happened today in Ambassa, India.

First earthquake mystery of 2017.
This is a conspiracy site after all.
This morning at just after 7am (yeah I slept in) I got up, fed the cats, made a coffee and then sat out on the back porch as I do every morning to have a cig. and I now use my phone to check the earthquakes overnight.
I go first to Geofon as thier list is easy to read, they don't miss many, anything over 4.5 should be there.
The last quake listed was NORTH PACIFIC, I think it was a 5.1, but can't remember now 4 hours later.
Now it is GONE.
I checked my phone browsers history but the page is not saved. The map image they showed was quite close in on an undersea ridge so I clicked on the "view in Google Maps" to be able to zoom out a bit to see where it was.
The co-ordinates were lat/long 40.38,170.15 (that was saved in the phones history)
This puts it on the Nintoku Seamount about half way up the Emperor Seamount chain that run NW out of Hawaii towards Kamchatka Peninsula.

Unusual location, I have seen quakes listed here before, but very very rare.

I checked EMSC data contributions page to see if it was there, as they often have quakes that don't make to the public list, but nothing there.

Wiki article on Nintoku Seamount

Nothing on LISS POHA Hawaii, the UTC time would have been around 18:00UTC earthquake.usgs.gov...

So it must have been an error.

Thanks to all of our "experts" here on ATS. I come here FIRST, whenever the earth shakes...because I know I will get accurate, thoughtful information.

I don't think us lurkers really understand just how much time and effort go into your posts. The earth might shake, but you guys ROCK!!

I feel TrueAmerican should likely run (or be apart of) the yearly QuakeWatch page.. The guy is our resident quake expert and is full of knowledge. Not to mention, he's constantly monitoring everything...Hope he chimes in soon, just so he can be apart of this thread moving forward.

Kind of my neck of the woods. So goggled, "earthquakes alaska this year" and your missing 5.1 quake showed up. But it is way further north just off the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) near the Aleutian islands than your pic.

Plenty of activity out there so it does not surprise me.

Hope this helps!

Heres another North Pacific Ocean one from geofon today, not a normal seismic area
I managed to screenshot this one, in case its an error too

F-E Region: North Pacific Ocean
Time: 2017-01-03 23:09:55.9 UTC
Magnitude: 5.9
Epicenter: 160.88°E 27.39°N
Depth: 10 km
Status: A - automatic
geofon.gfz-potsdam.de...

If these were real, some really strange is going on in the North Pacific
that Fiji one is also on the "wrong side" FWIW, based on where the majority of Fiji quakes are normally

First Muzzerror of 2017

I gave you the wrong date on that Fiji graph, It was pre set for 2016/360, I changed the station but forgot to change the date

here is the correct address 2017/003
ds.iris.edu...
That looks more like it.
change the 003 to 004 to get the next day (this afternoon here)
throw in a couple more zeros on the s.0.00 __ 05 part and you can see the 2 M5's

strange that graph on day 360/2016 (Christmas Day) was pretty close to a match, thats why I didn't notice it at first
that would have been the Chile 7.6 at 14:22 then a 4.7 and a 4.8 at Honshu.
