This is interesting. Due to police being under a microscope, police stops are down 90% in Chicago.

Garry McCarthy, Chicago’s former police superintendent, noted Tuesday in an interview with the Daily News that the number of police stops is down by nearly 90% this year compared to last.

Also, the department no longer holds CompStat meetings to focus on crime hot spots, he said.

“We have completely flipped the script where we investigate police and not criminals,” said McCarthy, a Bronx native who once served as the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of operations under then-Police Commissioner Howard Safir during the early 2000s.

“And as a result, we are reaching a lawless state in this country.”"

i linked to an intercept article that explains the problem. Essentially: you put what are minimum wage employees in charge of investigating criminals with enormous amounts of wealth, and then expect them to not end up on the take.

Chicago had a city designed to create the worst dynamic. The rows of highrise projects created little fiefdoms that drug lords owned, and police taxed.

Its victim blaming for the police to point the finger at the public. Plain and simple.

That statistic of police stops is telling. What a lot people don't understand is that you often get the shooters off the streets by arresting them for unrelated crimes. You rarely ever catch a shooter in the act, but they get pulled over for traffic violations and other minor crimes. The police usually find a weapon on them and they get put away for a gun charge.

47 shot and 7 dead in a city of 3 million. Why does the federal government need to be involved? While it certainly is problematic, this is nothing that the state shouldn't be able to handle.
