We weren't sure they were going to let us take pictures, so we were trying to sneak a shot of it before it got on base.

Who can spot one of two major components that required a redesign between the YF-15A and F-15A?

Uneducated guess:

1. Wingtips got more rounded off/cut back
2. The color obviously ; )

The wingtips evolved a little later. There were two pretty major changes made early on in testing. One can't be seen here, the other can.

The stab sawtooth, correct. They encountered flutter problems fairly early on in the program, so cut the sawtooth into it. The second big change was the size of the speed brake. The wing change came a little bit later.

Yess, now you mention it, they also added some torpedo like arodynamic shapes at the wing/hull detachment area.

So.. i got no points : (

Speedbrake, is that a large flap, diploid while landing? Is it also used in the air?

Still a beautiful plane.

Edit: I googled it. And found it.

www.pond5.com...

Is it also used in the air, with dogfighting ?

Occasionally, yes. It's used to help slow the aircraft. It was initially much smaller.

I guess it will not only brake, but will also give you a huge down-force.
But i get it, it is one of the "tools".

Here's a top down angle that shows how small the original speed brake was.

Didn't they change the intakes as well?

No, that was one area that they got right from the start.

Thanks for the clip on the Falcon. I have time in both the 10 and the 20, and I like the way those airplanes fly. Expensive, but very nice handling.

No. Not used in dogfighting.

Used in rejoins. Sometimes tactically to slow down quickly. Pattern. And landing.
