Some people might like the idea of professors not having tenure, though they probably want seniority at their own job. Anyways, if you read the detail in this it is disturbing. A man who never went to college is changing the state law so that tenure and college programs themselves are established by a panel that he appoints. If the panel decides a program isn't needed anymore they can fire the professors and get rid of it quickly. While there are a few like women's studies that I wouldn't mind seeing disappear this could have drastic ramifications. Imagine Walker getting rid of all liberal arts programs because they're not conservative. History, psychology, sociology, the arts to name a few could all be eliminated from the University of Wisconsin.

Conservatives hate our University system, even though it's considered to be one of the greatest features of our nation. If Walker succeeds in this then maybe the other 30 Republican governors will follow suit. Pretty soon no one will know anything about history, so they won't question all the terrible, evil things that conservatives want to do to us and have always done throughout history.

Why should teachers have tenure ?

Think they should be like everyone else.

They could lose their job at anytime.

Pretty soon no one will know anything about history

They don't now.

so they won't question all the terrible, evil things that conservatives want to do to us and have always done throughout history.

LOL

Just wow.

So indoctrination should be taught eh.

Fear should be taught.

Brainwashing should be taught!.

Oh damn them evil 'conservatives' the scourge of society!

Not the way I see it.

Even 1 small ounce of gold is more valuable than a teacher or college 'degree'.

These days.

So tell me.

Where is the common sense in paying $100k for an education to have no job when one graduates or one that pays a 3rd of what someone spent to get an 'education'.

Funny part there is the majority of that cost is LABOR. Tenured teachers, who usually have assistants teaching there classes some of the time.

And education is a product just like any other.

And people are paying more for the labor than the actual cost to make the product.

That doesn't make sense to me.

It means people are over paying.

That lesson was painfully obvious with GM.

Tell that to the doctors that save peoples lives or the people that taught those doctors. Walker is such a tool he should have snap on stamped on his forehead. You gotta admit the Koch brothers got their moneys worth with walker.

Doctors ?

Thought teachers was the topic, but oh hell lets run with it.

One of the reason 'healthcare costs' have gone up is that ALSO because people are paying more for labor than the actual healthcare.

Gotta pay them doctors education bills now don't we. Good thing they have 'tenured' teachers.

Walker is announcing for president tomorrow, and this will likely be one of his attack points. Remember the Republicans used to mock pointy-headed liberals, intellectuals, and related creatures of the night. Walker is already leading or placing in the top few candidates in some polls, and is polling as the winner of the Iowa caucus. Combined with Trump leading his voters around like a circus barker, Walker will have to out-Trump trump, and there is the dilemma of competitive GOP presidential politics. Jeb Bush will have his hands full getting the nomination, it still feels like a Bush coronation but the edges are beginning to fray.

Ohh the irony of your statement in all of this is great! FYI very few people learn any history in college. Funny thing about history is if you don't learn from it, yada, yada. The evil [insert the blank] is a tried a true method of getting a people worked up to do someone else's dirty work. It seems you must have neglected a few history courses yourself. Is it only certain status quo's that warrant shaking up? Maybe it is time for these tenured Prof's to actually prove they are worth it?

What a wide sweeping statement, don't even know how to reply to such a hateful post. It's like saying all blacks are...... All gay people act like...... As usual this open, culturally diverse, tolerance brought to you by the left! Can't we all just get along, as long as it's the lefts way!

Yes.

The universities have produced enough people over time to be responsible for every major financial and social crash.

All the bankers and most politicians are well educated.

Because good teachers are as valuable as gold.

...and just as scarce. The issue is, if you want to make a comparison to gold, gold processors don't hang onto iron pyrite, paying more for it each year, in hopes it will become anything more than fool's gold. That is what Walker is proposing. He isn't suggesting elimination of the gold, he's advocating the ability to fire the fool's gold, the failures, the losers... and this country's colleges are FILLED with them sitting in tenured positions for no good, defensible reason.

The fact you think "liberal arts" refers to the political spectrum and is somehow opposed to conservatives shows he is not the only one that never went to college.

Hint: It has nothing to do with politics, it's based in Latin and means basically essential information.

Heaven for bid we cut back on the useless lib arts degrees(I have one myself before going back for another degree). I mean imagine the hit the restaurant industry would take without a steady supply of staff.

Tenure does nothing but institutionalize failure. Where is the incentive to do well and why should under performing staff be allowed to stay on at the expense of the school and students? Why would there be a risk of losing "good teachers" ? If they are that valuable surely the school will do what they can to keep them on staff without having to shoulder the burden of teachers who realize all they have to do is show up to get paid.
