Why should our country work towards de-segregated communities?

What about people who don't want to live in de-segregated communities? Do they not have any rights?
Not discriminating in housing loans is one thing, but this is ridiculous.

I might be wrong so forgive me if I am but aren't you from Australia or NZ? Did you forget your own history? Aboriginals and other tribals that you wiped out and still treat as 2nd class citizens? Again excuse me if I have you mistaken with another poster.

The harsh reality is that this doesn't elevate standards of living in the long run.

If a person or family cannot afford or does not subscribe to middle class values, they will not be able to maintain it for long, no matter the subsidies there will be problems - either financial or cultural. In the meantime, the area subject to this initiative will languish and the authentic middle class will leave the area.

This policy will only serve to bleed urban blight out over a wider area as the middle class of all races perpetually flee to safer, better maintained areas.

What is going on with the President , the current admin , and this country ? It almost seems as sometimes they are actually antagonizing this.....

Or whats far more likely is that the white American middle class culture of promoting segregation in the first place, is the root cause of the high crime slums the US is so notorious for.

Personally, I think this is a positive policy. Its about time you guys joined the 21st century. Rather than hiding in your pretty little white dominated neighbourhoods, packing a gun everywhere you go, because you live in a constant state of paranoia. Convinced that there's constantly evil people hiding in the shadows, just waiting for the perfect opportunity to come and murder your whole family.

A society fueled by irrational fear and hate of people who look different......Just saying.

You have entirely gotten it wrong. I do not think there is a predominately white community in my state.I dont own a gun and neither do an awful lot of people I know.So you can forget the "Messiah's" statement about clinging to our guns and bibles. And I certainly dont hide in my predominately white neighborhood. Heck , I go out and celebrate and enjoy all my friends and neighbors on a regular basis . We are like family here. Hide ? I do exactly the opposite. And , yes I walk down the streets in my city at any time without "fear" .
I dont know where you are from , but I feel pity for you. First , it sounds like you live the life above. Second , with all the misconceptions you have , life must be miserable for you . May you find peace one day. I have.

Wait.. is that a blanket statement on all white suburban people?

Aren't you being... dare I say it, racist?

I imagine his city and specifically block where he lives is going to be first to offer low income hud housing correct?

I mean this is his idea he should be a leader and set the example right?

well, city folk....if you don't like it, leave the city. In the country we don't have "neighborhoods", except maybe the same folks who live in your road. The streets have name like "County Road 120" and "Farm to Market Road 2358".

Othrwise, i can't wrap my head around it. I mean, some measures could be taken...but it boils down to economy. If there isn't a middle class, with jobs to support it, then everyone is poor. So i guess we will all have equality soon enough anyway. In the meantime, i just don't see how this is going to work....but i wish them luck.

No link to the source?

This was posted about a few weeks back here. IIRC the issue which isn't made clear in your excerpt is that what this is really about is how federal funds are spent.

That is, that if your community wants to receive federal money for low income housing, then you have to have some sort of plan in place to not use the funds to continue expanding slums.

What people like you fail to realize is that slums don't come about because poor people are a bunch of lice ridden homicidal criminal maniacs. The environment itself promotes the increased crime rates, the gang activity, etc and its an inter-generational trap that many people won't escape because the schools suck, employment opportunities suck and its far easier to fall in with "the wrong crowd" when you're surrounded by a bunch of poor, desperate people who have all the same advertising driven consumerist desires as the rest of us and lack the means to fulfill them.

The answer is clearly not business as usual. When you concentrate poor people in a single area, there's no tax revenue to improve the schools or fund improvements to infrastructure and so there's no way of attracting decent employers. It's a vicious cycle.

Anyway, not to worry it's not going to lead to anything immediate and I'm sure the GOP will have ample opportunity to step in to perpetuate defacto segregation.

Wait, What? How are white middle-class responsible for what others do with their neighborhoods? We are also responsible for people not raising their children properly and teaching them morals and self-control and of those children becoming criminals? Amazing, who knew.

Personally, I think this is a positive policy. Its about time you guys joined the 21st century. And why exactly can't anyone else live in "pretty neighborhoods?" Ever think those guns keep us safe and keep our neighborhoods clean from scum and criminals? Shocking, I know, but it just may help.

A society fueled by irrational fear and hate of people who look different......Just saying.
Your post reeks of self-projection.

Sadly, many housing discrimination complaints are made by people who are trying to live slightly above their means in an effort to escape a bad situation and/or do better for their kids but, when it invariably fails, they will then claim they were discriminated against by the apartment complex, homeowner or bank in a desperate attempt to buy time or keep from having to move back to worse conditions.

So, this HUD initiative seems to me to be little more than just them priming their own pump. Staying in business.

A better fix is the quality-of-life code enforcements in blighted communities (broken windows/abandoned properties) or subsidizing community upgrades like schools, parks, bus stops, healthy grocers.

You raise a valid point:

If there isn't a middle class, with jobs to support it, then everyone is poor. So i guess we will all have equality soon enough anyway.

I'm not usually one for doom porn but in my opinion, the long term prognosis for the employment situation if we don't take drastic measures is pretty damn bleak and so in the end, it's probably not going to matter much anyway. Give it a few generations and the majority of the population will be living in economically depressed urban sprawl and the wealthy few will all have retreated behind the high walls and armed guards of their enclaves.

Then when society reaches a critical mass of disillusioned people who realize they and theirs have no chance of ever getting their piece of the economic pie, out come the pitchforks.

I would agree with you, but not really regarding anything political being posted, more just anything negative regarding the US.

Anything military/war related always has a negative US twist to it.

The sad reality is that ATS was overrun by Russian trolls a very long time ago, and denying ignorance lost the war vs the $h1tty ignorant troll.

ATS is more of an entertainment, tabloid type of outlet now. Although I suppose that could lead into a conspiracy theory regarding the intended destruction of any credibility ATS had.

The Obama administration unveiled new rules Wednesday to rid the country of racially segregated neighborhoods by directing cities and towns to set goals for reducing segregation, and then regularly report their progress to the feds.

Communities nationwide will be given a series of questions designed to help them figure out whether racial bias is causing segregated neighborhoods, racial or ethnically concentrated areas of poverty, unequal access to opportunity or disproportionate housing needs in their jurisdiction. They will be required to set goals related to that data and publicly report on their progress every three to five years.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development rule is intended to prod communities to meet fair housing standards established in the Fair Housing Act of 1986, by making previously unavailable or unreliable data accessible to the public, which could then use the data as an impetus for change.

The Fair Housing Act requires the government to not only eliminate racial discrimination in housing, but also to encourage racially integrated neighborhoods.

“This is the most serious effort that HUD has ever undertaken to do that,” HUD Secretary Julian Castro told The Washington Post. “I believe that it’s historic.”

HUD will compile the data into a central database where anyone can look at the mapped data and determine what kinds of changes need to happen in their community. HUD will support communities working to integrate and federal dollars will be on the line.

The rule follows a Supreme Court decision, based on the Fair Housing Act, that any housing policy that disproportionately impacts minorities can be targeted in a lawsuit, regardless of the intent of the policy. It could indirectly force some states to move Section 8 housing to high-income suburbs.

I was in school when they started busing students from the projects to predominantly white schools. I saw the fights. I was dragged in to my share of scraps with the new kids and it never ended well. One kid kept sneaking up behind other kids and combing their hair. Turns out he had head lice and just wanted to share.

How can you take the same people who are in the urban high crime zones and put them in the suburbs when you are fully cognizant of the fact that its not the people form the suburbs shooting up the projects, its the people who live there? How can you do that and not expect serious problems and more violence than you can handle? Unless, its just one more step toward declaring martial law. In that case, it makes perfect sense. Take the two most vehemently opposing sides and smash them together in their own homes.

Perfect storm.

It's all design to break the spirit of the hard working educated family. Bring in trash to their neighborhood and soon trash begins to smell like trash. Actually as a Real Estate broker in Santa Monica, it was threaten to bring in the "hoods" to destroy the neighborhood if such sh.. was enforced back in the 80's. And I'll tell it will happen again, but guess what the rich will buy a house next to the local politician and move in the "hoods" of Compton. If they can't take it, don't dish it out. An eye for eye you politicians.

Obama seems like one of those people that read a book on parenting then thinks it's easy. This seems like a real foolish idea. I'm sure some people would like to move to a nicer area, but who would choose to move into a less desirable area. How could this even be enforced?

Gosh, you are one of the few I've seen that have common sense and I know why, you are from Kentucky.
