MPs vote to recognise Palestinian state, adding to pressure on Israel

The UK finally took charge with Parliament voting to recognise the State of Palestine...

In a land slide victory for the Semetic people of Palestine, 274 voted yes, only 12 voted no...

MPs including the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, have voted to recognise Palestine as a state in a symbolic move that will unnerve Israel by suggesting that it is losing a wider battle for public opinion in Britain.

The vote of 274 to 12, a majority of 262, on a backbench motion has no practical impact on British government policy and ministers were instructed not to vote. Labour decided to impose a one-line whip, and the Liberal Democrats, like the Conservatives, gave their backbenchers a free vote.

Next up, a look at the illegal annexation of Palestinian land...

In possibly the single most important contribution in an emotional debate, Richard Ottaway, the Conservative chairman of the foreign affairs select committee, said the recent annexation of West Bank land by the Israeli government had angered him like nothing else in politics.

This is a great sign for Palestine...
During the debate over statehood, many MPs spoke of broken promises such as the Balfour Declaration...
& how UK needs to become more active in protecting the People of Palestine!!!

It is a big step in the right direction, & I couldn't be more pleased for them!

As for Israel...

The former foreign secretary, Jack Straw, said the vote was not simply a gesture, because if it were, the Israeli government would not be as worried by the vote.

The Israeli government, he said, wants the recognition of the Palestinian state only at the successful conclusion of any negotiations. But Straw said “such an approach would give the Israelis a veto over whether a Palestinian state should exist”. A vote for recognition would add to the pressure on the Israeli government, he said. “The only thing that the Israeli government, in my view, in its present demeanour under Bibi Netanyahu understands is pressure."

About time they were put under pressure by our Governments...
Their actions have been hostile, disgusting & illegal...

Palestine Will Be Free!!!

No doubt my friend...

If people are honest with themselves they need to understand that UK Parliament is as close to democracy as we'll get to any government worldwide!

Good for the ole U.K., giving a moral victory to Palestinian statehood and a razzing to Israel for its treatment of its neighbors. Kind of related: Even when Israel tried to negotiate with Arafat they still wanted to keep control of the aquifers, which was the sticking point.

Israel will not be pleased. They tried to pressure Parliament to not have this vote but it looks like they failed. The terrorist running Israel broken one agreement after another like the Balfour Declaration then they broke the Oslo Accords. They have broken every peace agreement with Palestine by continuing to kidnap citizens and throw them into prison without due process they destroy peoples homes and murder Palestinians. If only the American government could summon up the courage to do like the UK but seeing how our politicians are in AIPAC's pocket it won't happen soon.

But as the quoted comments observe, this has no practical effect on government actions.
The majority was as large as it was because the "government" vote stood aside.

Standing aside is equivalent to voting yes...
If they didn't want it they'd have voted otherwise!!!

Didn't you notice in the article? They stood aside because they were instructed to stand aside.
Had they voted their opinions, the margin would have been narrower.
It looks as though the government expected to lose, if it opposed the motion, and therefore deliberately stayed out of it, to make the victory more meaningless.
In practice the government decides who the UK does or does not recognise.

That's rich coming from a country that just successfully squashed one of their territories from becoming an independent state.

Palestine isn't a territory of Israel.

Erm there was democratic election.

A election only those in that territory could vote in.

And they CHOOSE to stay in the UK.

No military force or cohesion was used.

Wow when will people get it?.
The independence vote was democratic and fair, the majority chose to continue in the Union.
I bet you have been watching Braveheart again.

A parliament vote is the only way "government" can make a decision...
& the no's would have lost either way...
You speak as if it's invalid when it's clearly not!

Let's not discuss Scotland please.

This is about The State Of Palestine & Israeli pressure...
Anything Palestinian or Israeli sure...

Not Scottish independence...
That's way off topic!!!
