No ‘rainbow families’: Canadian fertility clinic bans patient from using non-white donor

A single Canadian woman, who sought in vitro fertilization in the only local clinic in Calgary, has been prohibited from using donors of a different ethnicity to avoid “creating rainbow families.”

One of the main reasons was that after she picked out donors who met required standards, had a good health history and a compatible blood type, a list of potential biological fathers for her child was narrowed-down to about 20 Caucasian donors. Moreover, many of them had already been used by several other patients in the area.

I think it should be up to the mother, in the donor is healthy and clean and approved. As she mentions, this could/would result in many woman (maybe whom live in the same area) getting the same male donor and kids growing up with eachother, not knowing, they have the same father and maybe end up in a relationship down the road.

I find it almost insulting to call them Rainbow families.

That's crazy! It's not like we just started having interracial families in the last year or so. This has been going on long enough that many (at least in my area) children look as if they are interracial already. I don't know why it would be a problem as long as everything measured up health wise... People are often allowed to adopt children who are different from their own race, why not allow them to give birth to them naturally?

It just seems a bit silly to me. Seriously.

Not to mention the fact that they would rather chance having family have family with family unknowingly, than they would have interracial babies toddling around. That makes it even more ludicrous.

So if a Chinese woman cannot find a chinese donor, what do they offer her? Just the white guys because they decide the skin color matches closer than a black person?

Another question is no lobby group or otherwise seems interested in making a fuss about these rules. That's the real question.

Also, doctors at the clinic, Greene said, feel “a child of an ethnic background should have the ability to be able to identify with their ethnic roots.” He added patients should have a “cultural connection” to their donors.

That's not for you to decide. Doctors trying to be social dictators.

To support his argument, Greene said that the rules at the RFP follow the spirit of Canada’s Assisted Human Reproduction Act, under which doctors should place priority on the well being of potential children and refrain from producing “designer” babies.

That doesn't support his argument.

Plus it's saying that if you're mixed race there is an issue about your "well being" that ppl should be concerned about before you where born.

Crazy how one can say "rainbow"," white", and "black". But we can't say " Red".

No, it's not quite like that, in many ways these clinics are like a dating agency, they can and do screen out baldies by default for instance...not PC either, but then Elton John was a baldy but now has locks on his nap, who's to say some unknown, would be donor is the same, (Elton BTW, would himself be screened out because he is a shirt lifter) oops..that's not PC either. See how stupid it can get! Screen out the baldies, screen out whatever, medical issues besides.

Who cares? The planet is imploding and we're worrying about this crap?

My family is just about as mixed as you can get and we do actually call ourselves a rainbow family.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Canada has the homosexual marriage, legalized bestiality, free street drugs and paraphernalia and socialized medicine. It's a lawless society with little in the way of police and almost as big an influx of illegal immigration as the United States has.

The thing is that Canada has many different racial fiefdoms- English/caucasian, French caucasian, Chinese, Eskimo, all concentrated into different geographic areas. Their bureaucratic socialist government has probably deemed this "racial purity" what's best for society.

Sickening. So is their beer.

God bless the USA. I hope we never have universal gay marriage because I fear for the immorality our society will be going and for God's wrath. Who cares if he hasn't punished Canada or Europe for legalizing it yet. He made those countries so the USA could have someone to look down upon. If his model country subjects to such immorality I fear for us all. It's only a matter of time before Islam becomes illegal and we banish those trouble making Muslims.

Why would a person want to make a living, personal statement about their PC beliefs? Can they not visualize the agony that the child MAY have to endure during their lifetime? Good lord, you can't adopt a cat or dog these days without being fitted and approved for the normal characteristics of the animal of choice. So let's really be super cautious when it comes to one race wanting to be impregnated with another (perhaps just to make a point of their views). This situation is not the same as adopting from a limited pool of available orphones.

I think it's a doctors quote, not an RT subject line. They interviewed probably a bunch of doctors, and this quote would get the most attention so they used that Doctors testimony. I figure.
