They dont Russians and Ukrainians have been friends for a long time. And the Russian troops know this isnt right you can see it in the way they're acting just like that reporter who works for RT said that putins doing the wrong thing here. Surprisingly apparently shes going to keep her job. Putin is digging his own grave even with the Russians.

It is good to see some actual footage from the scene, the report really kinda cleared a bit of the fog from the conflicting reports from official sources the past 24 hours...

Admiral.. did switch loyalty from Ukraine to Crimea... and has been replaced.

Russian troops (armed) are there on site... Ukraine troops unarmed by choice without turning over their weapons (not sure if showing the reporter where they had them cached was such a great idea)

Ukraine & Russian troops wondering WTH the Cossacks were doing on the outside of the gates..

Overall, seemed eerily calm... like everyone is in limbo not quite sure what is going on, and of course the Ukraine forces concerned for the welfare of their loved ones living in the city whilst they maintain their duty guarding the base..

At least the military seems to have discipline... the folks I would be wary of are the ones outside stirring the pot?

CNN was just talking about 2 Russian warships on the move in the bospherous straight? Also that Turkey scrambled 8 fighter jets eariler today. Things are really getting interesting if Turkey is getting into the mix over the territory that connects the black sea. Time will tell.....

21:31: E, Vilnius, Lithuania emails: Russia is holding tactical exercises in Kaliningrad, very near to Lithuania's border. The air is thick with tension, people are talking about war and loss of independence. Mass media keeps flooding the Internet with panic and pessimistic news.

if somebody gets that far, the weapons have either been used already or they are not needed anymore

Just letting the persecuted "ethnic Russians" in Lithuania know that help is on the way.

Turkey scrambled their F-16s as a precaution due to a Russian military plane (unspecified what kind) which flew off the Turkish coastline (but still over international waters). Nothing major there but since Turkey is a member nation of NATO it makes sense they would be on a heightened state of alert for all things Russian right now.

turkey is a;ready involved peole may not know this but when the Soviet Union disbanded in 1991 paving the way for an independent Ukraine, Turkey presented the Treaty of Kucuk Kaynarca to claim that they had the right to ask for Crimea to be given back to them. However, at that time Turkey was satisfied with simply campaigning to ensure the rights of their fellow Turkic brethren, the Crimean Tatars, were safe under the new state.

So dont think Turkey isnt concerned with what's going on in the crimea. They already told Putin he needs to let them decide there fate. Funny how history always falls into the equation isnt it.

Btw. normally I don't like Vice magazine for their sensationalism, but this report is actually pretty nice and showing how calm both sides are staying, since they don't want to fight and are just doing their job.
The unprofessionalism comes into play with the people outside of the base. They are destabilizing the situation.

I wonder why no other newsoutlet is able to produce something like this, mostly free of propaganda and showing both sides.

That's an interesting thought, and a good place for this thread to go, until asen updates any further. Just what exactly could Russia do, through it's allies or proxies? Military action is simple, yes, but what kind of economic actions could they take? Could they, as others have said, prod China to call on American debts to be repaid? Hand over a couple of nukes to Iran (or I should say a couple more?)??

I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Switch the petro-dollar to a second alternative reserve currency (renminabi/ruble etc.) as the BRICKS nations have been planning for a few years.

If 1/3rd of the planet stopped holding USD as reserve currency, our USD will collapsed; it would create a firestorm which would result in the Russian/Chinese alliance on top and the USA/UK alliance in ashes economically.

If we sanction Russia, we collapse our own currency by forcing Russia and China to utilize an alternate reserve currency backed by gold (BRICKS).

Cossacks... Seriously? Ugly bloodthirsty people.
Ukraine troops should not waste time with gestures and make at least a true defence line down there. At the end who would even blame them for shooting first in case of a contact? They keep their brothers under lock without water now? Who could sue them for a rescue operation? They sure have will and all but to this point it looks like they lack command. However army has a statutory duty to act. Not that theres no presidential order so anyone can have the land without any resistance!

Hey there everybody. I just registered becouse i wanted to show you one thing i created two days ago as a way to express my feelings regarding this all, the whole uncertainity and fear of war. It's a music composition i made. I hope nobody will be mad that i wanted to show it here to you, right? It's the most dramatic track i've ever created and i want to give you an opportunity to feel what we all kinda feel - being concerned about what is happening now in the world... So you can consider this a gift or simply ignore it as it will sink in all another posts that will appear. But as i said i am deeply concerned about what my neighbours (i live in Poland) must go through now... and i believe i captured that unsettling feeling of fear of the War Spectre that may or may not happen, and nobody should want it as the history taught as more than enough how bad war is. So i expressed it all in my Fog of War musical expression. So i invite you to join me with that upcoming-doom feeling, that we all could agree even more - that the world should avoid it at all costs. And do i speak too much and maybe of too obvious things? Then i am going silent and leave some of you that have curious ears - with this link. soundcloud.com...

Cheers to you.
Amadeus

Ps: but i find it kinda positive to see that most of the world (uh, at least it seems) is uniting in agreement that such acts of aggression are NOT good. At least i want to believe that the moral thing is the main thing that holds us together. Or at least us - "common" people. With politicians and politics - i guess its never sure if its moral or power-driven. But still there is something in the air like - "such acts are oldschool and such things shouldn't happen anymore in 21st century". So maybe we ARE actually going somewhere and forward, uniting the world AGAINST any kind of aggression and inhumanity. At least mentality is going forward. I hope! Its always hard to say such things in the name of the whole world haha... Should i only speak for myself?

On the other hand, if China is smart, it would collapse the Russian economy, destroying a potential rival so it can concentrate on bigger game.

More about the arrival of the USS George H. W. Bush aircraft carrier in Greece:

March 4, 2014 at 9:39am
By Mass Communication Specialist Third Class Shaun Griffin, GHWB Public Affairs

PIRAEUS, Greece - The 10th Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) arrived in Piraeus, Greece, for a scheduled port visit, Mar. 4.

...

George H.W. Bush is on a scheduled deployment as part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

SOURCE: USS George H.W. Bush Facebook page announcement

Video of the carrier arriving:

As I believe was already mentioned in this thread, the whole carrier group arrived. This apparently includes several nuclear submarines and allegedly a lot of nuclear missiles on the subs.

This may be part of the reason Russia decided to go ahead with the ICBM test firing today...

Another update via VICE News from the Ukraine Navy base..

After watching this video, it looks like the two military sides don't really want to do battle, but that the Cossacks are pushing for it. Don't they realize that their lives will be greatly impacted if a battle broke out?

Great Insight

So the Russia troops are Insulting the Ukrainan soldiers while holding them hostage in there own country while the out side gates of the base is crowded with plane close Russian military pretending to be Ukrainians

Wow... This wreaks of being staged, no civilians would ever feel the need to escort press who are reporting to the rest of the world especially when there home country has been invaded

Agents for sure

No Russia has there own oil supply this has nothing to do with petrol dollars. It doesnt hurt the US at all it will hurt Europe but not the US. But it does hurt Russia they need foreign investments. They are losing money hand over fist at this point those rich russians arent so rich anymore there bleeding money in there stocks. Two days in a row the Russian stock market continued heading into free fall. See Russia makes 2,021 million off trade with the US where the US makes 741 million selling to Russia the US economy won't even miss this. with this massive of a trade deficit only help the US economy. As far as Russia not using US dollars that happened awhile ago they have been using gold since no one wants rubles.
