People are! Russia is just the big news story because of the Olympics. You opt to host an international event you come up for scrutiny, here in the UK we are having lots of reports about Brazil and Qatar because of sporting events.

Well it probably didin't help to directly insinuate that one of the most powerful men in Russia - Putin, was a closet gay.

Remember the pussycat dolls glaming up a photo of Putin wearing heavy makeup and drag?

Yeah, way over the top show of heterosexual male toughness / alpha male show of 'straighness'...but did anyone seriously expect Putin to..ahem...just bend over and take it?

Course he wouldn't...he's been busy seeling a macho image to the world since he appeared on the world stage.

Mind you, after watching the incredibly camp Olympic male figure skating, this is all just a tad ironic.

Gardener, why have you started three threads regarding gay issues in the last few hours?

They all end in the same way as an excuse for some ATS members to bash LGBT members on ATS.

Do you have an agenda, not being funny just asking as you seem to start the thread and then the bashing begins and you have very little input. A bit like loading the bullets and letting someone else fire the gun.

I'm sure if you wanted to make a anti gay documentary in America they can easily create something very similar.

This entire gay agenda being pushed to destablize Russia and make them look bad because America got embarrassed by Snowden is going a little too far.

If only they spend that much time focusing on creating jobs then things would be much better in America.

I don't think it's only Russia, the homophobia north of South Africa's borders is growing to shocking levels.

There may be many factors, and homophobic laws introduced by various colonizers meant that certain customs and gender identities were driven underground.

Not all these countries could see LGTB people in the open since the 1960s, like many Western countries.
They had other concerns then, like wars and hunger.

When it became visible, people like Christian fundamentalists arrived and fed them their stereotypical lies about gay people.
They changed curious and concerned people into violently homophobic people with their propaganda.

I really worry that this may lead to a genocide or "holocaust" against LGBT people, or even anyone who knows a gay person and doesn't report them.
That could include entire villages.

The homophobes and haters have boiled this kettle for a long time, and eventually it will boil over into blood-shed.
It already is...
Any religion or sect that had a hand in that will then have hands full of blood.
That will be the final end of their pretenses of goodness and morality.

There is a difference of public image and what is really seen. Mayor of Sochi Pahomov are said to told that Sochi is gay free but thats a public image what Russia and Sochi wants to give.
There were an interview in our news of gay club Myak ( Sochi )performancers, and what they said is "Pahomov haven´t really declined the gay community of Sochi and what he had said has taken out of context and Phomov isn´t a homophobic either"

The stage has been set. We will now be enemies with Russia for reasons related to morality.

All of it contrived, it appears as though it is being arranged for the people to be at odds with each other this time, not just the government. I guess the internet was creating to close of a bond among humanity, and it had to be broken apart and segmented again.

Whilst Putin is a great statesman, his policy towards the LGBT community has created an atmosphere in the country where these kinds of attacks are acceptable. This is not acceptable in civilised society in 2014.

You do know that the International red cross is monitoring Gitmo 24hrs a day right? And they did not just get sent there for no reason. alot of their countries will not even take them back either. Violence for NO REASON though is un acceptable.

Those videos are some of the most disgraceful and disturbing things I have ever seen. As far as the absurdity of Russians equating homosexuality with pedophilia - have they never read a simple dictionary? That equation literally boggles the mind.

Honestly, I never could understand the existence of homophobia, especially in this day and age.

1) You cannot assume someone is gay just by looking at them.
2) What they do privately is as much business of yours, as your life is to them. (NONE)
3) They aren't looking to convert anyone.
4) Nothing in your life changes, because someone else is gay.

You are gay or you are not; whatever happened to "live and let live"? And if hating gay people is based on your religion or The Bible, you lose all credibility IMO, at least insofar as you are openly malicious or spreading hate visibly. Most religions are based on LOVE, not hate. The hypocrisy of believing otherwise is astounding. If in doubt, see #1.

Good points. In most occasions of hate I see this to be true. The same reason that kids who are abused at home may become bullies. Whereas unhappy adults tend to take theirs out on whomever is around and capable of being dominated.

In everyday Russian language 'pedick' is used as a light curse word meaning 'bad guy'. Both 'pederast' for homosexual and 'pedophil' for pedophile have the same 3 letters... So, you see, no one even thinks of which of two words is right while cursing. So for Russians it is 'literally' the same.

There is even a joke: 'Pederast in a good sence of the word'. No one knows exactly what the good sence is: homosexual or 'bad guy'

No one was disputing that Homophobia does not exist in other countries, however the OP was about Russia. Or are you saying as it happens in other places then its OK to happen in Russia?

Homophobia and Homosexual Arousal

A 1996 study done by the Psychology department at the University of Georgia and subsequently published in the prestigious Journal of Abnormal Psychology concluded with some very interesting findings. The title of the study was Is Homophobia Associated with Homosexual Arousal. While we have all heard anecdotal just-so stories explaining outward homophobia as some sort of denial or projection, this study gathers empirical data to support these types of hypotheses. This is not good news for the ego of the hondo-macho type.

The basics of the study

The researchers gathered 64 male University of Georgia students to participate in the study. They were all fully informed about the nature of the study and were told they could stop at any time. Once they showed up for the study, they were given a few surveys that have been historically demonstrated to be valid assessment devices. The survey that is probably of most interest here is a survey designed to measure the level of homophobic tendencies or homonegativity. After the surveys were administered, the participants were instructed how to fit the apparatus taken to a private room. Once in the private room, baseline measurements were taken before a display randomly showed three types of sexually explicit videos: heterosexual, homosexual-females, and homosexual-males.

The apparatus

The apparatus was basically a band that the participants wore around their penis. The band contains technology that measures the circumference of the participant's junk. Any increased blood flow due to arousal is measured by the increase in penile circumference. While this may be kind of funny, it is a time tested measure that has been used in numerous studies.

In the analysis of the data, two groups were compared. High score homophobic males and low score homophobic males. These categories were determined by the scores obtained from the before mentioned survey.

The interesting part

Both groups showed an overall increase in penis circumference while watching all three categories of sexually explicit material. But the only instance where there was a significant difference in engorgement between the homophobes and non-homophobes was during the homosexual-male porn. The homophobic males showed significantly more engorgement while watching two men go at it than the non-homophobic males.
