Contents of Mysterious Black Hole Jets Revealed

Love me some black hole news.

Using data from the XMM-Newton satellite and CSIRO’s Australia Telescope Compact Array, astronomers reveal the contents of mysterious black hole jets. An international team of astronomers has answered a long standing question about the enigmatic jets emitted by black holes, in research published today in prestigious journal Nature. Jets are narrow beams of matter spat out at high speed from near a central object, like a black hole. “Although they have been observed for decades, we’re still not sure what they are made of, or what powers them,” ESO astronomer Dr María Díaz Trigo, lead author of the study, said.

However, a few weeks later, the team took another look and this time saw radio emissions corresponding to the sudden appearance of these jets, and even more interestingly, lines had appeared in the X-ray spectrum – the tell-tale signature of ordinary atoms – around the black hole.

Always been fascinated by these jet streams. I always thought of them as the black hole spewing out the remnants of its latest meal! They also terrify me somewhat. Any other black hole enthusiasts? I'm very much in awe of them and their sheer size and power. Gravity gone mad, as they say....

Was the prevailing theory the jets were just pure energy/radiation? That's how I remember it but haven't kept up with the latest science and studies...

I love black holes too, and the concept that the jets are spewing both seems to make more sense to me. I mean, they can't eat all of the matter - can they?

I've always imagined them spewing out 'Dark Matter' kinda like a opposite of sunlight from a star. Dark matter *which the Universe is supposedly full of* has to come from someplace right?

That's an interesting theory but unlikely. Atoms can interact with each other and stay as two distinct things. When two black holes interact, they combine and just create a bigger black hole.

OP, great article, I love black holes, they are truly one of the bigger mysteries in our universe and the more we learn about them, I believe, the more we will learn about how our universe really works.

Basically, yes. And they speculate it is what powers the black hole. The spewing out, as I like to call it, is still not 100% understood. After all, it was always said nothing could escape a black hole, not even light. So how are the jets escaping? I think the most popular theory is centred around accretion discs and magnetism, essentially 'snapping' the matter back allowing it to win the battle over gravity.

Some scientists theorize that there are some particles that can escape the gravity barrier when escalating towards a black hole. Although they'd be very small and on the subatomic level.
Hawking radiation could be one instance.

Seeing how nobody has really gotten a good glimpse of what black holes really look like
or what they are we can speculate all day on whats really going on.

Kind of like riding a wave then through it.

What's on the other side. Is a big bang happening on the other side of the black hole. A new Universe born. All the matter going in has to go somewhere lol.

I'm a nebbish when it comes to things like this.

I always imagined a black hole to be a ball shape. Like the sun, only in reverse.

Yay, they figured it out...

until next week when they're proven wrong.

I love the it.. Scientist final figured out what black hole emits at its poles.. It's some kind of matter and radio waves.. HUH? .... Wasn't that the prevailing theory to begin with?

I find it really hard to imagine how these jets of matter are emitted from the center of a black hole...
Aren't black holes so dense that they suck in everything in their immediate area,including bending space/time?

So how can something with such immense gravity actually burp out matter?
The only way I can see is that the "burps"have more energy than the sucking energy of the black hole itself..
That is the only way I can see that the jets would be able to escape from the gravitational pull of the black hole.

That's why I question and ponder the possibility of spewing out of 'Dark Matter' from Black holes. Supposedly Dark Matter is not affected by gravity etc.
