That CNN/Alhurra video actually doesn't show the start of it but the point at which she was at the last leg of her journey by the Capitol. Noticed that the scenery/roads of that footage was not a match for 15th and E starting point where there was a verbal altercation at a security checkpoint by the White House.

The CNN video shows they fired upon her car when she left the gate. Reports are of a black car riddled with bullet holes fleeing the scene. She was probably wounded from the beginning, perhaps causing her to crash.

edit on 3-10-2013 by eeyipes because: (no reason given)

Unless their is a different video the CNN clip on the main page shows:

1. They had the car pinned against barrier
2. 5 cops surrounding the car
3. 1 cop with hands on each door
4. She reverses into the cop car
5. She speeds off
6. You hear the gun shots..

I do not understand why their are some folks on ATS that seem unwilling or unable to ever blame criminals or people acting in a dangerous manner. Yes, I get it..The Govt is horrible and corrupt, I do not think anyone disagrees with that. In this case one person caused this scenario and that was the driver of the black car. If you choose to drive like an idiot, if you choose to drive like an idiot in DC and if you choose to drive like an idiot in DC when cops have surrounded your car then you have made a really dumb and bad choice that only she is accountable for.

Wow, from the way she was driving she obviously thought she was still on the washington beltway.

I'm withholding judgment until more is known. It comes as no surprise though that many people think she should have been killed, or have already decided she was mentally unstable without knowing the entire story. It's the internet, so par for the course.

That is an honest and fair way to look at so thank you for posting it.

Normally I am hyper-critical of the overuse of deadly force by police, but in this case? Nope. At some point everyone else's safety has to be protected. After she escaped the second time I think it became justified.

That is one of the problems we face when evaluating this stuff sometimes. For a brief second we all wonder if this is another attack and so do the cops who are sitting, guns drawn as the car comes down the road.

The paradox here is...

It doesn't matter whether it was in front of the Capitol Bldg or on Main St in Topeka... You have guns drawn on you and drive away... you're gonna get shot.

No ..the Paradox is...if this was some little town in Florida, rather than the Capitol building...and some no-name wannabe cop with a gun, rather than the Capitol Police....And the woman was buying skittles, rather than ramming police cars and fleeing...everyone here on ATS would be fiercely defending the shooters under "stand your ground".

Overall, I agree. Only time I've ever walked through a checkpoint knowingly and willingly was Checkpoint Charlie as a tourist entering into E. Berlin for what it's worth. There's a difference, however, between tourists on foot and allowing cars to enter the vicinity of the White House. I think, considering that car bombs are kind of a "thing", that sort of prudence isn't such a bad idea to protect both tourists and politicians alike.

Trying to figure out why she did what she did is probably why it doesn't make sense. It's irrational but a lot of times, people act irrationally and in ways that don't make sense. It's kind of human nature. I'm waiting to see if they come up with something in her home that may provide some answers as to what was going on there. Maybe she was a tourist who didn't think things through and made a series of very stupid mistakes. Maybe she was heading down there, angry and determined to air her issues with daughter in tow. The only person who knows for sure what was going through her mind is her and, unfortunately, she's dead.

What state is her license plate from? That is a Mercedes Benz so she must have had money, or it was a rental.

Here are the two pictures...
Her car

Police car

Her car does not have that kind of damage, but the police car is completely totalled.

I wonder how long that standoff was, before she backed up and drove away.
I ask because it seemed like there were many Officers surrounding the car and you would think they took note of the entire situation and could see whether or not anyone else was in the car. I would hate to think they saw the child and did not relay this to let other Officers know.

WarminIndy ,
We have already established that the squad car was damaged by running into a barrier.

No offense, but all of that has been covered.

Her Plates are Conn.

I even posted her plate number a while back.

The Cop Car hit a barricade during the chase and rolled or lost control...prompted by either sloppy driving or she rammed him during the chase from WH to Cap. Building.

The car is not Mercedes, but black Lexus.

Did she at any point back into that police car to cause that damage? Her car looks possibly crumpled at the rear in that pic.

Ummmm, that's what "everyone else's" means...... right?

At some point her actions cause enough danger she has to be stopped. Not my fault she decided to drag her kid into this. How many adult's lives would YOU say it would be ok to lose because of her child? Ten? Twenty? A hundred?

As I said- In my opinion after she failed to give up the second time she ran out of chances.

Yeah, well..

If this happened at a 7-11 and someone wanted a slurpee who's name was Kevin, and he had a gun, but left it at home, then... well, it's obvious after that. Am I right?

Thank you for that information.

I am looking for where the license plate was from. It looks a little like Connecticut.

License plates by states

If she had a child with her and she was from Connecticut, then she had to have planned something in advance to drive that far.

And isn't it ironic that Connecticut is called The Constitution State, because it was the first to accept the Constitution and that someone from the Constitution State would do this in the seat of American government where the Constitution is at?

A law enforcement source identified the woman to the New Haven Register as Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist.

Y'know, after seeing the video and hearing more details, I'm willing to bet the officers at her door at that point did see the child in the car, and was the reason they did not fire on her at that point. They waited until she backed into the cruiser, went forward (almost clipping an officer out front), and tried to escape. At that point, she became a viable threat and force was justified IMO.

I do not believe it was a random lost tourist at this point. These seem to be the actions of a desperate and determined person to get at the white house for some reason that may have gone with her to the grave, unless police find something in her Connecticut home or in her online correspondence (if any) that will shed more light on this incident.

Shame really...the one I feel for is the poor kid.
